Pumices from the summit area of the Mt. Baekdu was analysed with respect to the physical characteristics. Fallout pumice deposits around the somma of the Cheonji caldera, Mt. Baekdu consist mainly of white pumices, but black pumices and gray pumices are also displayed together. White pumices are mainly rhyolitic($SiO_2$ 71.1%) and black pumices are trachytic($SiO_2$ 64.8%) in composition, and gray pumices are intermediate composition($SiO_2$ 68.0%) between white pumices and black pumices. Average density of felsic magma formed the Mt. Baekdu pumices is $2.45g/cm^3$ in anhydrous magma and $2.33g/cm^3$ in hydrous magma, respectively. We determined the density and calculated the vesicularity of three different coloured pumices, which collected in the vicinity of the Waho-bong(2,566 m) and Gwanmyeonbong(2,526 m) of southern somma of the Cheonji caldera, Mt. Baekdu. Average density of the yellow pumices was measured as $0.74g/cm^3$, black pumices as $0.75g/cm^3$, and gray t0 white pumices as $0.73g/cm^3$. Average density regardless of the colour of pumices was nearly constant at $0.75g/cm^3$. Vesicularity of pumices is calculated to be 67.8~69.4% and these pumices can be classified as a highly vesicular according to classification of vesiculation characteristics.

We present a quantitative evaluation of density, vesicularity and microtextures for coarse lapilli collected from the Jugam Scoria Deposits, northeastern Ulleung Island. Lapilli from the deposits have modal vesicularities of 61% in the lower part and 67% in the upper part, and vesicle populations dominated by non-interconnected subround vesicles. Clasts of modal vesicularity have margin-parallel zonation, with subaerially quenched rims interpreted to preserve "syn-fragmentation" magmatic textures in microlite-free sideromelane rims, grading "post-fragmentation" tachylitic interiors with vesicle and microlite textures that progressively coarsen from rim to interior. Degassing scenarios are linked to syn-fragmentation vesicle textures to demonstrate that the magmas degassed in dominantly closed systems. And diffusion-controlled cooling rates of trachyandesitic pyroclasts in contact with atmosphere are linked to post-fragmentation evolution of vesicle and microlite textures to infer about transportation and dispersal of the pyroclasts in low shooting jets. These textural analyses show that the Jugam eruptions were strictly applied to the strombolian type, analogous to the hawaiian type among any classical subaerial eruption type.
The geology of the northwestern Cheju Island consist of Pleistocene to Holocene volcanic rocks which could be devided into basalt layers, the Sungsan Formation composed mainly of volcaniclastic debris exposed along the shoreline, and more than 30 cinder cones. Columnar joints and vesicles are dominant in the basalts of the Pyeosunri and the Sihungri basalt Formations. Volcaniclast and clay layers are intercalated in basaltic layers. When volcaniclast of the interlayers would be swept away by ground water and some caves of channel shape would be formaed. Overlying lavas cracked by columnar joints could be easily destroyed, collapsed and/or sunk. Geomechananical nature of the rocks such as strength may be controlled by the vesicularity(size, shape, and orientation of the vesicles) of the rocks. On the basis of vesicularity as a factor of strength, the effective strength ratio(Ke) could be calculated as Ke=0.3-0.72, in which the smaller Ke value reflects the lower in internal stress. In the studied area, the strength of the rocks tends to decrease as increasing in altitude of provenance of the rocks. The rocks in the area show relatively low values in angle of failure strength($\phi$) ranging from 10$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$. In conclnsion, the rocks in question, majority of which the critical value exceeds 0.33, belong to the unstable rocks in the aspect of engineering geology.
We report petrologic characteristics including $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ absolute ages of the subsurface lavas recovered from borehole cores in two islets, Marado and Gapado, off the southwestern coast of Jeju in southernmost Korea and discuss on the volcanism in the region. The lavas in Gapado are apparently divided into one unit with bright colored, aphanitic texture and sheet jointed, and another unit with dark colored and massive. The outcrops often show differentially weathered pattern due to textural difference. While, the lavas in Marado have vesicular and glomerporphyric texture, even though each lava flow unit in Marado has slight unique texture with variation of vesicularity and phenocrysts. The chemical composition of rock core samples from Gapa borehole and Mara borehole shows that the lavas from Gapado and Marado are classified into basaltic trachyandesite($SiO_2$ 52.6-53.6 wt%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ 7.3-7.5 wt%) and tholeiitic andesite($SiO_2$ 51.7-52.8 wt%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ 3.6-4.1 wt%), respectively. The measured $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ plateau ages range from $824{\pm}32\;Ka$(MSL -69 m) to $758{\pm}\;Ka$(MSL 19 m) for core samples of Gapa borehole and $259{\pm}168\;Ka$(MSL -26 m) for a core sample of Mara borehole, respectively. The absolute age of Gapado basaltic trachyandesite is well correlated with that of Sanbangsan trachyte(Won et al., 1986). Meanwhile, the age of a sample in Marado has $259{\pm}168\;Ka$(MSL -26 m) with poor plateau age formation and high error range. We report the data in caution but the rock composition and absolute age of Marado tholeiitic andesite are relatively correlated with those of lava units from Duksu and Sangmo-2 boreholes, indicating the volcanism during 260-150 Ka. On the basis of interpretation of occurrences of exposed and subsurface volcanic rocks of the study area, stratigraphic relationship with adjacent borehole cores and the bathymetry chart of surrounding area, it indicates that the lavas in Gapado were formed around 800 Ka during relatively early stage of volcanic activity in Jeju Island. Meanwhile, Marado may have originated around 260-150 Ka during relatively young stage of volcanism in Jeju Island. It is inferred that the volcanisms have originated in land and these islets were individual ancient volcanoes. The apparent topography has been re-shaped by tidal erosion due to transgression.
