  • We investigate effects of vertical resolution on a parameterization of convective gravity waves (SGWDC) developed in Song and Chun (2005) through offline and online tests of the SGWDC parameterization. For offline tests, numerical simulations of the SGWDC parameterization with different number of vertical levels (L66, L117, L168, L219 and L270) from the surface to 120 km are performed for two different saturation methods. It is found that the wave momentum forcing is overestimated or underestimated in the SGWDC parameterization with different vertical resolutions, depending on the saturation methods. The increase of the vertical resolution modifies the magnitude and distribution of the wave momentum forcing in the parameterization, and this is mainly due to modification of wave saturation levels in the wave saturation processes. However the wave momentum forcing converges in the parameterizations with vertical resolutions higher than L168. For online test, the SGWDC parameterizations with vertical resolutions of L66 and L164 are implemented into a climate model with vertical resolution of L66, separately. In the L164 experiment, the wave momentum forcing decreases in the mid-latitude winter mesosphere in July and zonal mean flows are more realistically reproduced in the tropical regions compared with those in the L66 experiment. These results demonstrate that the wave momentum forcing calculated in the parameterization is sensitive to the vertical resolution, and the implementation of the SGWDC parameterization into high resolution models is required for realistic representation of the gravity wave momentum forcing in large-scale numerical models.

  • The vertical distribution and seasonal fluctuation of soil microarthropods in the forests with different flora were investigated in this study. soil micrarthropods were concentrated as much as 71.8% in the first layer subsoil (0-5cm), 22.3% in the second layer subsoil (5-10cm), and 5.9% in the third layer subsoil (10-15cm) in the decreasing order. The population density in the first layer decreased slightly in winter while that of the second layer increased. However, the density in the first layer bounced back in the following spring. Seasonal fluctuations of population density were revealed "Two peak-Two valley type", that is, the densities were high in fall and spring, and low in winter and summer.nd summer.

  • The vertical distribution of dioxins and hexachlorobenzene(HCB) in a sediment core was investigated to elucidate historical trends of dioxins and HCB deposited into Upo wetland. The total concentration of dioxin ranged from 8.7 to 66.27 pg/g-dw in Upo sediments deposited, and from 17.64 to 97.03 pg/g-dw in Mokpo. Dioxin fluxes increased from the first-1990s and then reached a maximum in the mid-1990s. The major source of dioxin by comparing the congeners pattern was pentachlorophenol(PCP) used of agrochemicals. The HCB concentration in most of samples was detected below the MDL(Method Detection Limit of 0.5ng/g), except a few samples.

  • Mt. paektu(altitude 2,749.6m) is ecologically important because successional processes following volcanic eurption are quite clear. We investigated plant communities with altitude know vertical distribution of plant vegetation on the north-western slope of Mt. paektu was divided into five parts; the pine-hardwood forest zone(600∼1,000m alt.), the lower coniferous forest zone (1,000∼1,500 m alt.), the upper coniferous forest and birch forest zone(1,500∼2,000 m alt.), the alpine shrub zone(2,000∼2,500 m alt.) and the alpine meadow zone(2,500∼2,749 m alt.). In particular, the alpine zone was divided into alpine shrub and alpine meadow zones and distributed up to 2,500m alt. these results reflet the adaptations of these shrubs at this altitude. But these shrubby communities disappeared on the alpinemeadow zone. In the alpine meadow zone above than 2,500m alt., some meadows, papaver radicatum var pscudoradicatum. bistorta ochotensis, chrysathemum zawadskii var. latilobum etc., were occured.

  • The distribution line through which electricity is supplied from substation to customer generally varies by underground line and overhead line. In contrast that the underground line is shielded, the overhead lines do not have the shield layer. To overcome this weak point of the overhead lines, the aerial bundled cable(ABC) connection systems have been developed. The basic concept of the ABC connection system is the application of the underground cable system containing complete shield layer to the overhead cable system. The ABC system is the innovative technologies which enable the prevention of electric shocks, reduction of the maintenance charge and damage of the cable. This paper give a full detail of vertical connection system applied within a country.

  • This study elucidated the floral composition of marine algae and community structure at Hallyeo-haesang National Park, on the southern coast of Korea. In all, 89 species, comprising 10 green, 30 brown and 49 red algae, were identified. The dominant species in terms of importance value were Ulva pertusa, Colpomenia sinuosa, Undaria pinnatifida, Padina arborescens, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum sagamianum and Amphiroa dilatata. The vertical distribution of marine vegetation was characterized by Enteromorpha linza - Ulva pertusa - Gelidium divaricatum in the upper intertidal zone, Hizikia fusiformis - Sargassum thunbergii in the middle intertidal zone, and Amphiroa spp. - Hildenbrandtia rubra - Corallina pilulifera in the lower intertidal zone. Functional form group analysis showed that coarsely branched forms comprised 50.3% of the algal community, whereas thick leathery forms, sheet forms and filamentous forms comprised 11.9-13.1%. R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values were 1.91, 0.74 and 2.64, respectively. A cluster analysis of species occurrence suggested that the number of marine algal species differed greatly among the sampling sites.

  • During the CareBeijing campaign in September 2006, Imaging Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (IDOAS) measurements were made over the city of Beijing, China using a spatial resolution of 146 pixels horizontally and 61 pixels vertically, each with a field of view of $0.133^{\circ}$ and $0.072^{\circ}$ in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Using Fraunhofer reference spectra (FRS) for the evaluation of data for two consecutive days, the diurnal variation of $NO_2$ distributions was determined from data measured every single hour from 08:00 until 16:00 on September 9 and 10. Both days presented a fairly clear sky with high visibility. The setup allowed detailed images of the low surface $NO_2$ distribution over Beijing. Images with less than a 30-min temporal resolution showed variation of plume dispersal in both horizontal and vertical directions. An in-situ measurement was also conducted. Results from both instruments are interpreted by considering local emission sources and wind conditions.
