  • This paper offers a method of magnetic compass adjustment for the vessel alongside the wharf using newly designed magnetic north former, which makes the same magnetic field-change as the turning vessel does. The characteristics of the magnetic north former was examined by observing the deviation curves of the magnetic compass installed on the compass deviascop at laboratory. The magnetic north former consists of A and B arms which hold the permanent bar magnets at the both ends of each arm. The arm is to rotae in the horizontal plane about the vertical axis fixed at the center boss of the magnetic compass and it is to compensate the horizontal plane about the vertical axis fixed at the center boss of the magnetic compass and it is to compensate the horizontal component of the earth's field. The B arm makes the artificial magnetic north around the magnetic compass for every ship's heading. The results of investigation are summarized as follows ; 1. The observation and correction of magnetic compass deviation can be done without swinging the ship, of the effect of D coefficient is negligible. 2. The residual deviation curve of the magnetic compass depends on the accuracy of deduced value of ship's multplier($\lambda$). 3. The errors due to the inaccuracy of deduced value of ship's multiplier change in the same way as the B and C coefficient do.

  • The carbon nanowall (CNW) is a carbon-based nanomaterials and it was constructed with vertical structure graphenes and it has the highest surface density among carbon-based nanostructures. In this study, we have checked the growth properties of CNW according to the substrate angle. Microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system was used to grow CNW on Si substrate with methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gases. And, we have changed the substrate angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ in steps of $30^{\circ}$. The planar and vertical conditions of the grown CNWs according to the substrate angle were characterized by a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In case of the growth angle increases, our experimental results showed that the length of the CNW was shortened and the content of carbon component was decreased.

  • The effect of thermal stratification on the turbulent dispersion from a fine cylindrical heat source was experimentally examined in a wind tunnel with and without a strong temperature gradient. A 0.5 mm dia. nichrome wire was used as a line heat source. Turbulent intensities, r.m.s. value of temperature and convective heat fluxes were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. The results show that the peack value and the spread of the vertical turbulent intensity for the stratified case are far lower than those in the neutral case, which indicates that the stable temperature gradient suppresses the vertical velocity component. All of the third order moments including heat fluxes measured in the stable condition have very small values than those of the neutral case. This nature suggests that the decrease of scalar fluctuations in the stably stratified flow is mainly due to the suppression ofthe turbulent diffusion processes by the stable stratification. A simple gradient model with a composite timescale which has a simple weighted algebraic mean between dynamic and thermal time scale yields reasonably good numerical values in comparison with the experimental data.

  • Three generalized additive models were applied to the distribution of anchovy eggs and oceanographic factors to determine the occurrence of anchovy spawning grounds in Korean waters and to identify the indicators of their occurrence using survey data from the spring and summer of 1985, 1995, and 2002. Binomial and Gaussian types of generalized additive models (GAM) and quantile generalized additive models (QGAM) revealed that egg density was influenced mostly by ocean temperature and salinity in spring, and the vertical structure of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and zooplankton biomass during summer in the upper quantiles of egg density. The GAM and QGAM model deviance explained 18.5-63.2% of the egg distribution in summer in the East and West Sea. For the principle component analysis-based GAMs, the variance explained by the final regression model was 27.3-67.0%, higher than the regular models and QGAMs for egg density in the East and West Sea. By analyzing the distribution of anchovy eggs off the Korean coast, our results revealed the optimal temperature and salinity conditions, in addition to high production and high vertical mixing, as the key indicators of the major spawning grounds of anchovies.

  • This work deals with dynamic analysis of a monorail system with magnetic caterpillar where magnets are embedded inside each articulated element of the caterpillar, augmenting traction force of main rubber wheels to climb up slope up to 15 degree grade. Considerations are first given to determine stiffness of the primary and secondary suspension springs in order for the natural frequencies of car body and bogie associated with vertical, pitch, roll and yaw motion to be within generally accepted range of 1-2 Hz. Equations for calculating magnetic force needed to climb up given slope are derived, and a magnetic caterpillar system for 1/6 scale monorail is designed based on the derivation. To assess the hill climbing ability and cornering stability, and make sure smooth operation of the side and vertical guiding wheels which is critical for safety, a multibody model that takes into account of every component level design characteristics of car, bogie, and caterpillar is set up. Through hill climbing simulation and comparison with measurement of the limit slope, the validity of the analysis and design of the magnetic caterpillar system are demonstrated. Also by studying the curving behavior, maximum curving speed without rollover, functioning of lateral motion constraint system, the effects of geometry of guiding rails are studied.

  • Here we present a linear stability analysis and an MHD 2D model for the Parker-Jeans instability in the Galactic gaseous disk. The magnetic field is assumed parallel to a Galactic spiral arm, and the gaseous disk is modelled as a multi-component, magnetized, and isothermal gas layer. The model employs the observed vertical stratifications for the gas density and the gravitational acceleration in the Solar neighborhood, and the self-gravity of the gas is also included. By solving Poisson's equation for the gas density stratification, we determine the vertical acceleration due to self-gravity as a function of z. Subtracting it from the observed gravitational acceleration, we separate the total acceleration into self and external gravities. The linear stability analysis provides the corresponding dispersion relations. The time and length scales of the fastest growing mode of the Parker-Jeans instability are about 40 Myr and 3.3 kpc, respectively. In order to confirm the linear stability analysis, we have performed two-dimensional MHD simulations. These show that the Parker-Jeans instability under the self and external gravities evolves into a quasi-equilibrium state, creating condensations on the northern and southern sides of the plane, in an alternate manner.

  • The purpose of this study is developing a method to analyze and evaluate a golf swing motion using the ground reaction force (GRF) data. Proper weight shifting is essential for a successful shot in golf swing and this could be evaluated by means of the forces between the feet and ground. GRF during the swing were measured from 15 low-handicapped male golfers including professionals. Four clubs(driver, iron 3, iron 5, and iron 7) were selected to analyze the differences due to different characteristics of club. Swings of each subject were taken using a high speed video camera and GRF data were taken simultaneously by two AMTI force platforms. To simplify the GRF data, forces of the three major component of GRF(vertical, lateral, anterior-posterior force) at 10 predefined temporal events for each trial were selected and the mean of each event were calculated and evaluated. Analyzed vertical GRF (VGRF) data could be divided into two different styles, one-legged and two legged. One-legged style shows good weight transfer to the target leg and most of the previous study shows this style as a typical pattern of good players. Therefore the data from the iron 5 swing obtained from 10 one-legged style golfers are provided as criteria for the evaluation of a swing.

  • Flow mechanism around air flow sensor of electronic control engine, especially Karman vortex type, was investigated experimentally. The two-dimensional flow characteristics in the intermediate wake region behind a triangular vortex-generator respectively apex forward facing, apex backward facing and vertical flat plates following after apex forward facing(i.e vortex-flowmeter) were investigated at Reynolods number of $ReH=1.4\times10^4$; H is the width of a triangular vortex-generator. The vortex shedding frequency for wide Reynolds number from $7\times10^3$ to $2.1\times10^4$ was also surveyed. The velocity component was measured by X-type hot wire anemometer at 8H downstream from the bluff body. The coherent structure of the intermediate wake behind a bluff body was obtained by conditional phase average technique. As a result, it was verified that the vertical flat plates following after apex forward triangular vortex-generator make not only more linear relation between free stream velocity and vortex shedding frequency but also more periodic vortex in the vicinity of the center of wake.

  • The liquid entrainment and vapor pull-through offtake model of RELAP5/MOD3 had been developed for SBLOCA (Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident). The RELAP5/MOD3 model for horizontal volumes accounts for the phase separation phenomena and computes the flux of mass and energy through a branch when stratified conditions occur in the horizontal pipe. In the case of CANDU reactor, this model should be used in the coolant flow of 95 feeders connected to the reactor header component under the horizontal stratification in header. The current RELAP5 model can treat the only 3 directions junctions; vertical upward, downward, and side oriented junctions, and thus improvements for the liquid entrainment and vapor pull-through model were needed for considering the exact angles. The RELAP5 off-take model was modified and generalized by considering the geometric effect of branching angles. Based on the previous experimental results, the critical height correlation was reconstructed by use of the branch line connection angle and validation analyses were also performed using SET. The new model can be applied to vertical upward, downward and angled branch, and the accuracy of the new correlations is more improved than that of RELAP5.
