This study was conducted to identify the structural performance of the opening in a location close to the support point in the perforated beam system of steel beams. In addition, structural performance was determined through experiments on reinforced openings using vertical and horizontal steel plates. In the steel simple beam, it was found that the opening was in a position closer to the support point, half the height of the steel beam (D/2), which was more appropriate than the height of the steel beam (D). In addition, the reinforcement effect of horizontal steel plate was greater than that of vertical steel plate reinforcement. Structural performance was improved when there was no gap between openings and steel plates.
The effects of the vertical component of a ground motion on the earthquake performances of semi-ductile high-rise R/C structures were investigated in the present study. Linear and non-linear time-history analyses were conducted on an existing in-service R/C building for the loading scenarios including and excluding the vertical component of the ground motion. The ratio of the vertical peak acceleration to the horizontal peak acceleration (V/H) of the ground motion was adopted as the main parameter of the study. Three different near-source earthquake records with varying V/H ratio were used in the analyses. The linear time-history analyses indicated that the incorporation of the vertical component of a ground motion into analyses greatly influences the vertical deflections of a structure and the overturning moments at its base. The lateral deflections, the angles of rotation and the base shear forces were influenced to a lesser extent. Considering the key indicators of vertical deflection and overturning moments determined from the linear time-history analysis, the non-linear analyses revealed that the changes in the forces and deformations of the structure with the inclusion of the vertical ground motion are resisted by the shear-walls. The performances and damage states of the beams were not affected by the vertical ground motion. The vertical ground motion component of earthquakes is markedly concluded to be considered for design and damage estimation of the vertical load-bearing elements of the shear-walls and columns.
In this study, the performance of shear deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams with rectangular cross-sections, which were externally bonded reinforced (EBR) with high strength CFRP and GFRP strips composite along shear spans, has been experimentally and analytically investigated under vertical load. In the study, the minimum CFRP and GFRP strips width over spacing were considered. The shear beam with turned end to a bending beam was investigated by applying different composite strips. Therefore various arising in each of strength, ductility, rigidity, and energy dissipation capacity were obtained. A total of 12 small-scaled experimental programs have been performed. Beam dimensions have been taken as 100×150×1000 mm. Four beams have been tested as unstrengthened samples. This paper focuses on the effect of minimum CFRP and GFRP strip width on behaviours of RC beams shear-strengthened with full-wrapping, U-wrapping, and U-wrapping+longitudinal bonding strips. Strengthened beams showed significant increments for flexural ductility, energy dissipation, and inelastic performance. The full wrapping strips applied against shear failure have increased the load-carrying capacity of samples 53%-63% interval rate. Although full wrapping is the best strengthening choice, the U-wrapping and U-wrapping+longitudinal strips of both CFRP and GFRP bonding increased the shear capacity by 53%~75% compared to the S2 sample. In terms of ductility, the best result has been obtained by the type of strengthening where the S5 beam was completely GFRP wrapped. The experimental results were also compared with the analytically given by ACI440.2R-17, TBEC-2019 and FIB-2001. Especially in U-wrapped beams, the estimation of FIB was determined to be 81%. The estimates of the other codes are far from meeting the experimental results; therefore, essential improvements should be applied to the codes, especially regarding CFRP and GFRP deformation and approaches for longitudinal strip connections. According to the test results, it is suggested that GFRP, which is at least as effective but cheaper than CFRP, may be preferred for strengthening applications.
Recently, the use of composite construction method using precast (PC) and cast-in-place (CIP) concrete is increased in modular construction. For PC members, pre-tensioning is used to improve efficiency of the structural performance. However, current design codes do not clearly define shear strength of prestressed PC-CIP composite members. In this study, 22 specimens were tested to evaluate shear strength of prestressed composite members with vertical shear reinforcement. The test variables were the area ratio of high-strength (60 MPa) to low-strength concrete (24 MPa), prestressing force of strands, shear span-to-depth ratio(a/d), and vertical shear reinforcement ratio. The test results showed the prestressing force did not completely restrain diagonal cracking of non-prestressed concrete in the web. Thus, the effect of prestress force was not insignificant in the effect for monolithic beams. The vertical shear strength and horizontal shear strength of the composite beams were compared with the strength predictions of KCI design method.

Numerical analysis of shear walls governed by flexural behavior is conducted for the seismic control performance of proposed friction dampers installed at the center of coupling beams. Control effectiveness of shear walls connected by beams with the proposed dampers are compared for single shear wall with same flexural rigidity. Average responses of the shear walls with the dampers are found with seven scaled-downed earthquakes based on KEC 2005 design spectrum. Slip load is the most important design parameter. It is designed to be 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90% of total vertical shear force at damper location to prevent damper slip in specific stories. Nonlinear time-history analysis is conducted by using SeismoStruct analysis program. Seismic control performance of the dampers is evaluated for base shear, energy dissipation, curvature and top-floor displacement. Results show that the dampers are the most effective in reducing the responses when their total slip load is 30% of total vertical shear force.

Currently, composite construction of prestressed Precast Concrete (PC) and Cast-In-Place (CIP) concrete with different concrete strengths are frequently used in the modular construction. However, current design codes do not clearly define shear design methods for such composite beams. In this present study, simply supported prestressed PC-CIP composite beams without vertical shear reinforcement or only with horizontal shear reinforcement were tested to evaluate the effect of prestressing on the shear strength and the shear design method for such composite members. The test variables were the area ratio of PC and CIP concretes, prestressing force, shear span-to-depth ratio, and shear reinforcement ratio. The results showed that the shear strength was increased by the increase of prestressing force and prestressed PC area, and the decrease of shear span-to-depth ratio.

If an alternative path would not be considered for redistribution of loads, local failure in structures will be followed by a progressive collapse. When a vertical load-bearing element of a steel structure fails, the beams connected to it will lose their support. Accordingly, an increase in span's length adds to the internal forces in beams. The mentioned increasing load in beams leads to amplifying the moments there, and likewise in their corresponding connections. Since it is not possible to reinforce all the elements of the structure against this phenomenon, it seems rational to use other technics like specified strengthened connections. In this study, a novel connection is suggested to handle the stated phenomenon which is introduced as a passive connection. This connection enables the structure to tolerate the added loads after failing of the vertical element. To that end, two experimental models were constructed and thereafter tested in half-scale, one-story, double-bay, and bolted connections in three-dimensional spaces. This experimental study has been conducted to compare the ductility and strength of a frame that has ordinary rigid connections with a frame containing a novel passive connection. At last, parametric studies have been implemented to optimize the dimensions of the passive connection. Results show that the load-bearing capacity of the frame increased up to 75 percent. Also, a significant decrease in the displacement of the node wherein the column is removed was observed compared to the ordinary moment resisting frame with the same loads.

Vertical Colour Selection (VCS) is an option for slim CRTs with increased sharpness and brightness. The direction of self-convergence of the DY is changed to vertical in order to obtain better spot uniformity, but the line scan direction remains horizontal. Hence, no video conversion is needed, contrary to transposed scan. In this paper we address two issues: First, there is a high risk of moire, since the scan lines and the phosphor stripes are parallel. We propose a feedback mechanism guiding the electron beams towards the middle of the mask slots. As positive side effects, the brightness is improved and the shadow mask can be made of a cheap type of steel. Secondly, VCS deflection coils have to satisfy different requirements than coils in ordinary CRTs. We discuss the design rules for self-convergent VCS coils and present simulation results.

We have theoretically analyzed the monolithic integration of vertical cavity lasers with depleted optical thyristor (VCL-DOT) structure and experimentally demonstrated optical logic gates such as AND-gate, OR-gate, and INVERTER implemented by VCL-DOT for an optical programmable gate array. The optical AND and OR gates have been realized by changing a input bias of the single VCL-DOTs and all kinds of optical logic functions are also implemented by adjusting an intensity of the reference input beams into the differential VCL-DOTs. To achieve the high sensitivity, high slope efficiency and low threshold current, a small active region of lasing part and a wide detecting area are simultaneously designed by using a selective oxidation process. The fabricated devices clearly show nonlinear s-shaped current-voltage characteristics and lasing characteristics of a low threshold current with 0.65 mA and output spectrum at 854 nm.
