This paper addresses the results of an experimental and analytical research of a helical coil spring subjected to dynamic behavior using space curve vector after considering elongation rate. Vibrations in helical coil spring can be divided into 3 modes such as vibrations of coil spring center axis' vertical direction. axis' horizontal direction, direction about center axis. However. these 3 modes are dependent one another and are characterized as coupled. The dependency was proved through both theoretically and experimentally analyzing the results of dynamic characteristics of coil spring center axis' vertical direction vibration by transfer matrix method using the governing equation of static equilibrium. Also this paper shows that pitch angle and active coils in coil spring affect the dynamic spring characteristics of the above 3 modes and are especially sensitive to the mode for vibration of axis' horizontal direction which most affects especially on dynamo stability of helical coil spring.
The effect of blockage ratio on wind tunnel testing of small vertical-axis wind turbine has been investigated in this study. Height and rotor diameter of the three blades Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine used in present test were 0.4m and 0.35m respectively. We measured the wind speeds and power coefficient at three different wind tunnels where blockage ratio were 3.5%, 13.4% and 24.7% respectively. The test results show that the measured powers have been strongly influenced by blockage ratio, generally increased as the blockage ratio increases. The maximum power at higher blockage ratio has been obtained at relatively high tip speed ratio compared with that at low blockage ratio. The measured power coefficients under high blockage ratio can be improved from proper correction using the simple correction equation based on blockage factor. In present study, the correction error for power coefficient can be less than 5%, however correction effectiveness reveals relatively poor at high blockage ratio and low wind speed.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the vertical position of maxillary first molar and vertical skeletal measurements in lateral cephalograms by using new linear measurements on the vertical axis of coordinates with calibration. Methods: The vertical position of maxillary first molar (U6-SN), and the conventionally used variables (ConV) and the newly derived linear variables (NwLin) for vertical skeletal patterns were measured in the lateral cephalograms of 103 Korean adults with normal occlusions. Pearson correlation analyses and multiple linear regression analyses were performed with and without calibration using the anterior and posterior cranial base (ACB and PCB, respectively) lengths to identify variables related to U6-SN. Results: The PCB-calibrated statistics showed the best power of explanation. ConV indicating skeletal hyperdivergency was significantly correlated with U6-SN. Six NwLin regarding the position of palatal plane were positively correlated with U6-SN. Each multiple linear regression analysis generated a two-variable model: sella and nasion to palatal plane. Among the three models, the PCB-calibrated model yielded highest adjusted R2 value, 0.880. Conclusions: U6-SN could be determined by the vertical position of the maxilla, which could then be used to plan the amount of molar intrusion and estimate its clinical stability. Cephalometric calibration on the vertical axis of coordinates by using PCB for vertical linear measurements could strengthen the analysis itself.

This study deals with the structural optimization of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades using a response surface method (RSM). The structural analysis results suggest that the stress of hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blades exceeds the yield strength. Optimization techniques are then applied to structural design to ensure a safe structure. First, the design factors that strongly influence the structural response are identified. The RSM was applied based on the design of experiments. The objective function and constraint terms set the weight and allowable stress, respectively. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was conducted to indicate the effects of the design factors on the stress and weight. Finally, structural design was performed for the hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine blade.
This paper deals with the development of biomechanical model on a seat with backrest support in the vertical direction. Four kinds of biomechanical models are discussed to depict human motion. One DOF model mainly describes z-axis motion of hip, two and three DOF models describe z-axis of hip and head, and while nine DOF model suggested in this study represents more motion than the otehr model. Three kinds of experiments were executed to validate these models. The first one was to measure the acceleration of the floor and hip surface in z-axis, the back surface in x-axis, and the head in z-axis under exciter. From this measurement, the transmissiblities of each subject were obtained. The second one was the measurement of the joint position by the device having pointer and the measurement of contact position between the human body and the seat by body pressure distribution. The third one was the measurement of the seat and back cushion by dummy. The biomechanical model parameters were obtained by matching the simulated to the experimental transmissiblities at the hip, back, and head.

This study was carried out to evaluate the vertical stress properties in sandy soil according to changes of foundation condition in soil bin compacted three layers. The following conclusions and comparisons have been made based on careful analysis from theoretical and experimental methods. : When sandy soil subjected to circular uniform load, the vertical stress increments ($\Delta\sigma_z$) was increased as load increasing, the maximum values of $\Delta\sigma_z$ was achieved at the point loading axis, and $\Delta\sigma_z$ was not shown over at a distance of three times of loading plate width (B). The vertical stress increments were achieved largely at 80 % relative compaction (Rc) compared to 95 % relative compaction due to stress concentration in sandy soil. When sandy soil subjected to circular uniform load, the $\Delta\sigma_z$ differences between theoretical and experimental values as load increased were more increased and its maximum differences were achieved at stress axis. When gravel surface macadamized over sandy soil subjected to load, the $\Delta\sigma_z$ was concentrated to load axis as load increasing, so that macadamization will be decreased load transmission.

When whole-body is exposed to vertical vibration, asymmetry shape of human body affects the response on the translational(fore-aft, lateral, vertical) and rotational(roll, pitch, yaw) motion. While the translational motion has been studied with various titles, it has been rare to study the rotational motion of human body exposed to vertical excitation because of lack of experimental equipment. This study was performed by using a 6-axis force plate installing strain gage type sensors for the rotational response. Sixteen male subjects were exposed to vertical vibration on rigid seat in order to investigate apparent mass of three translational motion and apparent eccentric mass of three rotational motion. Random signal was generated to make excitation vibration which was on an effective frequency range of 3~40 Hz, and magnitude of 0.224 m/$s^2$ r.m.s. The frequency range and magnitude used was selected for the vibration of passenger vehicle on idling condition. As the result, cross-axis apparent masses of fore-and-aft and lateral direction were not significant showing 20 % and 3 % of vertical apparent mass relatively. And apparent eccentric mass of pitch motion was dominant when compared to that of roll and yaw motion, which is reasoned by asymmetry direction of human body sitting on a seat.
This paper describes a research for the performance improvement of the straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine. To improve the performance of VAWT, the individual blade pitch control method is adopted. For the wind turbine, CFD analysis is carried out by changing blade pitch angle according to the change of wind speed and wind direction. By this method, capacity and power efficiency of VAWT are obtained according to the wind speed and rotating of rotor, and could predict the overall performance of VAWT. It was manufactured to verify performance of the experimental system that consists of rotor including four blades and base. Furthermore, torque sensor and power generator were installed. Also, active controller which can change the pitch angle of the individual blade according to the wind speed and direction was used.
In this paper, we propose a vertical axis water turbine with dual blades. A parametric study was conducted using numerical analyses. First, a two-dimensional finite-volume analysis with a commercial code was used to find the pitch angle of the main blade under different tip speed ratio conditions. Second, we developed a potential-based panel method to find the best configuration of the inner blades. Experimental tests were conducted at the circulating water channel of Chungnam National University. Various configurations of the dual blades were considered, and their performances were comparatively investigated. The results showed that the turbine with movable dual blades produces a constant torque and tip speed ratio at various flow rates.
