The hazardous effects of heavy alcohol intake and smoking to body systems have been identified by numerous studies, and there is many influencing factors on alcohol intake and smoking choices. The aim of this study is to identify the correlation between alcohol intake and digit ratio (2D:4D), as well as smoking and digit ratio (2D:4D) in university students. Participants were 121 male and 314 female university students. After filling in questionnaire related alcohol and smoking history, 2nd and 4th finger lengths were measured on both hands using vernier callipers with photocopy. This study showed 2D:4D of the males was 0.95, and that of the females was 0.96. There was a significant difference between male and female in digit ratio. The digit ratio according alcohol intake level significantly differed in only women's left hand. The digit ratio according smoking level significantly differed in only men's left hand. Moreover, The digit ratio was negatively associated with alcohol intake and smoking. The results of this study suggest that the digit ratio (2D:4D) affected with fetal testosterone concentration is negatively related to alcohol intake and smoking. Therefore, the digit ratio would be used in preventive program of alcohol intake and smoking of adolescent, or in antialcoholism /smoking cessation program as a biological basic data.

Nondestructive testing is one of the most commonly used quality inspection methods for evaluating ship structures. However, accurate evaluation is dif icult because various composite materials, such as reinforcements, resin, and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), are used in hulls, and manufacturing quality differences are likely to exist owing to the fabrication environment and the skill level of workers. This possibility is especially true for FRP ships because they are significantly thicker than other structures, such as automobiles and aircraft, and are mainly manufactured using the hand lay-up method. Because the density of a material is a critical condition for ultrasonic inspection, in this study, a hull plate was selected from a vessel manufactured using e-glass fiber, which is widely used in the manufacture of FRP vessels with the weight fraction of the glass content generally considered. The most suitable ultrasonic testing conditions for the glass FRP hull plate were investigated using a pulse-echo ultrasonic gauge. A-scans were performed with three probes (1.00, 2.25, and 5.00 MHz), and the results were compared with those of the hull plate thickness measured using a Vernier caliper. It was found that when the probe frequency was higher, the eco-pulse velocity of the receiver had to be lowered to obtain accurate measurement results, whereas fewer errors occurred at a relatively low probe frequency.
Precise and accurate measuring of tooth size is essential procedure in orthodontic diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility and accuracy of tooth size measurements with regard to tooth and investigator. Five investigators measured the size of one side of teeth, from central incisor to first molar, on 20 sets of casts that show a moderate degree of crowding. Mesio-distal width was measured with digital vernier calipers in each tooth and this procedure was repeated three times at two weeks interval. To obtain a standard measurement for each tooth, dental casts were cut into individual tooth, and its width was measured with micrometer. The difference between the measurement from dental cast and the standard measurement was defined as the measurement error. Through various statistical analyses, following results were obtained. 1. The reproducibility did not show significant differences with regard to tooth or investigator. 2. The measurement error showed some difference with regard to tooth and investigator. 3. The magnitude of the measurement error showed increasing tendency from anterior to posterior teeth with maximum value in the first molar. 4. While the measurements obtained on study casts generally showed smaller number compared to standard measurements, the direction of the difference showed variability according to tooth or investigator. 5. The measurement errors did not show significant correlations with the degree of crowding. The results of the present study indicate that the possibility of tooth size measurement error should be taken into consideration when diagnosing an orthodontic case.

The image quality of three-dimensional (3D) images has been widely investigated by the qualitative analysis method. A need remains for an objective and quantitative method to assess the image quality of 3D volume-rendered images. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantitative accuracy of distance measurements on 3D volume-rendered images of a dry human skull by using multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). A radiologist measured five times the twenty-one direct measurement line items composed among twelve reference points on the skull surface with a digital vernier caliper. The water filled skull specimen was scanned with a MDCT according to the section thicknesses of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75, and 5.00 mm for helical (high quality; pitch 3:1) scan mode. MDCT data were reconstructed with its acquisition section thickness and with 1.25 mm section thickness for all scans. An observer also measured seven times the corresponding items on 3D volume-rendered images with measuring tools provided by volumetric analysis software. The quantitative accuracy of distance measurements on the 3D volume-rendered images was statistically evaluated (p-value < 0.05) by comparatively analyzing these measurements with the direct distance measurements. The accuracy of distance measurements on the 3D volume-rendered MDCT images acquired with 1.25, 2.50, 3,75 and 5.00 mm section thickness and reconstructed with its section thickness were 48%, 33%, 23%, and 14%, respectively. Meanwhile, there were insignificant statistical differences in accuracy of distance measurements among 3D volume-rendered images reconstructed with 1.25 mm section thickness for the each acquisition section thickness. MDCT images acquired with thick section thickness and reconstructed with thin section thickness in helical scan mode should be effectively used in medical planning of 3D volume-rendered images. The quantitative analysis of distance measurement may be a useful tool for evaluating the quantitative accuracy and the defining optimal parameters of 3D volume-rendered CT images.
One of the most critical causes in determining the clinical outcomes of dental prostheses is the validity of models. However, studies that evaluated validity of digital models are few. The objectives of this study were to evaluate validity of edentulous digital models for full denture fabrication. Twenty stone models (edentulous model) were manufactured and scanned by dental blue light emitting diode scanner. Twenty digital models were manufactured. Six linear distances (inter-canine distance, inter-molar distance, two dental arch lengths (right, left), two diagonal of dental arch lengths (right, left) were measured for validity evaluation. The measurements of distances of stone models were used by digital vernier caliper and digital models were used by computer program. The mean${\pm}$deviations values of six distances were calculated. The means were compared by the Mann Whitney U test (${\alpha}=0.05$). All statistical analysis were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 20.0. Although digital models were smaller than stone models in six distances, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) and non exceeded the clinical acceptable range. The edentulous digital models for full denture fabrication can be considered clinically acceptable.
The purpose of this study was to find whether there is a correlation between tooth size and jaw size. Dental stone models and cephalometric radiographic films of 87 untreated individuals were evaluated. Repeated measurements of the maximum mesiodistal width of the teeth were taken by means of a digital vernier caliper. Linear measurements of jaw size were assessed by means of a digitizer and Visual C++ program. All measurements were taken separately according to the subject's gender. To determine the relationship between jaw and tooth size, the Pearson correlation was used. The results were as follows: 1. Male and female subjects showed a statistical difference in regard to tooth size and jaw size 2. In contrast to the results of the male subjects, there were no statistically significant correlations between maxillary size and maxillary teeth size in female subjects 3. In male subjects, the two maxillary sizes of PTM vert-ANS vert (FH plane) and PTM vert-A yen (palatal plane) were significantly correlated with themaxillary teeth size. Especially, the size of the upper central incisor showed significant correlation with all maxillary sizes. 4. In both male and female subjects, mandibular size B vert- Point J vert (mandibular plane) showed significant correlation with mandibular teeth size. As gleaned kom the results of this study, the relationship between jaw size and tooth size was fair or little in natural occurring good occlusion.
Selective attention induces perceptual distortions. ranging from repulsion of objects located near the attended area(Suzuki & Cavanagh. 1997) to magnification of the u unattended objects (Tsal & Shalev. 1996). Two hypothetical mechanisms have been p postulated: a shift of receptive fields' positions away from the locus of attention(receptive-field-recruitment hypothesis) or the enlargement of perceived space around the a attended location(space-enlargement hypothesis). The present study distinguished between these hypotheses by investigating the spatial and temporal properties of attention-induced d distortions. Perceptual judgements on vernier alignment. line tilt. line length were used to measure attention-induced changes in perception. Attention was induced exogenously(by blinking a specific set of dots around the test stimuli} or endogenously(by instructing the subject to selectively attend the dots). After inducing attention. the test stimuli were briefly flashed. A staircase method was used to measure the attentional effect. A vertical line was perceived as repelled from the locus of attention. and a line segment appeared longer when attention was given to its vicinity. The effects decreased as the distance between the locus of attention or the time between the onset of attention and the stimulus presentation increased. The results imply that the space-enlargement hypothesis provides a better explanation for the attention-induced changes in perception than the receptive-field-recruitment hypothesis.
There were the changes of shapes and color tones when the soil materials e.g. Blue-Porcelain, White-Porcelain, Bunchong, mixed A and B, mullite, Sanchong and Ongki - used by most domestic ceramic artists - were glazed at $ 950^{\circ}C,; 1200^{\circ}C,; 1250^{\circ}C,; 1280^{\circ}C,;1300^{\circ}C$ After the materials were dried out at 120t: in an electric oven, they were mixed with water, keeping the percentage of moisture content 25% and kneaded specimens which are hexahedron by $$ 250{\times}30{\times}8mm$$were produced and dried after calibrated at 200mm interval with a vernier caliper. After the materials were dried and glazed, they showed few shape-changes at $950^{\circ}C$ but began to changed at $1200^{\circ}C$,especially Bunchong and Ongki made rapid changes. In the case of color-change, White-Porcelain changed very little. The color of Blue-Porcelain, mixed A and B, Sanchong, Mullite changed to ]aune brilliant as temperature went up but Bunchong and Ongki changed to dark brown or dark chocolate under the same conditions. This study aims at suggestion of the basic data which minimize failure rates by recognizing the property of the materials on the basis of this study and regulating shape-change phenomena and sensitive changes of color when ceramic artists work.

Purpose: The Mulliken's method is a one of the very excellent technique to correction of the unilateral cleft lip. It could decrease the need of additional operation and second operation by the early simultaneous correction of unilateral cleft lip and nasal deformity, at a time. Numerous procedures were advocated for the correction of nasal deformity, but with general dissatisfaction of the results, it became obvious that no one procedure is the ideal one. The authors have been operating on unilateral cleft lip by Mulliken's method and long term follow - up of postoperative result was evaluated. Methods: The authors have done long term follow - up of result in the 75 cases unilateral cleft lip patient, during 1 ~ 7 years. That was repaired by simultaneous correction of cleft lip and nasal deformity by Mulliken's method at the period from June, 1997 to December, 2007. The patients were unilateral complete cleft lip 39 cases, unilateral incomplete cleft lip 36 cases. In the severe complete cleft lip cases, lip adhesion operation was done before definite operation. The mean age of unilateral cleft lip operation was 3.2 months. Five anthropometric parameters, which were upper lip, cutaneous lip and vermilion mucosa height, nasal tip protrusion, columella length were measured by Sliding Vernier Caliper. The anthropometric analysis was performed preoperative and postoperative at 6 months, 3, 5 and 7 years and the results were com pared with those of age - matched, normal children. T - tests were used to analyze the differences between the measurements. Results: Long - term postoperative results were evaluated by anthropometrically. Most patients showed adequate growth of upper lip height, vermilion mucosa height and columella length. But nasal tip protrusion was relatively short compare with normal value. Incomplete cleft lip group was nearly normal growth results than complete cleft lip group. Conclusion: In conclusion, we could make harmonious Cupid's bow, natural philtrum and lip, appropriate nasal shape by Mulliken's method. But nasal tip protrusion was under the normal values on complete and incomplete group. And incomplete group was more good results than complete group. We have experienced repair of cleft lip by Mulliken's method with 75 cases of unilateral cleft lip patients and conclude that it was very useful and good method.

The ratio of index finger length to ring finger length(2D:4D) is an index of prenatal testosterone and/or estrogen exposure. The aim of this study is to investigate digit ratio and the type of gender-role orientation, to identify the correlation between 2D:4D and gender-role orientation in health and medical students. Participants were 120 male and 146 female university students majoring in health or medicine. After filling in KSRI(Korean Sex Role Inventory), 2nd and 4th finger lengths were measured on both hands using vernier callipers with photocopy. This study showed 2D:4D in the males was 0.95, and that in the females was 0.96 (p<0.01). 38.3% male students revealed androgyny, on the other hand, 35.6% female students revealed undifferentiated type from KSRI. And also, there was a significant difference in masculinity score between male and female but not in feminity score. There was no significant difference in 2D:4D according gender role orientation. The KSRI masculinity score was negatively related to 2D:4D of left hand in male (p<0.05). The results of this study suggest that a more masculine gender role orientation in males is associated with low 2D:4D revealing higher testosterone and/or lower estrogen level in utero. However, more research in 2D:4D ratio to Korean is needed for support of this result.
