An Integrated Software Testing Framework for FPGA-Based Controllers in Nuclear Power Plants

  • Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have received much attention from the nuclear industry as an alternative platform to programmable logic controllers for digital instrumentation and control. The software aspect of FPGA development consists of several steps of synthesis and refinement, and also requires verification activities, such as simulations that are performed individually at each step. This study proposed an integrated software-testing framework for simulating all artifacts of the FPGA software development simultaneously and evaluating whether all artifacts work correctly using common oracle programs. This method also generates a massive number of meaningful simulation scenarios that reflect reactor shutdown logics. The experiment, which was performed on two FPGA software implementations, showed that it can dramatically save both time and costs.

Corrosion Characteristics of a 5Cr-1Mo Steel Specimen by Sodium-Water Reaction (나트륨-물 반응에 의한 5Cr-1Mo Steel 시편의 부식특성)

  • Small water leak experiment was carried out for the 5Cr-1Mo steel specimen in sodium atmosphere. Perfect re-open time for the leak path of a specimen, by micro leak, was 129 minutes, and its size observed about 2 mm diameter at sodium side. The halos phenomena appeared around of leak spot before the leak path has re-opened, and the size of halos observed was different from the real re-open size of a specimen. Also, the corrosion of a specimen initiated from sodium side, but it did not occur at steam side. In AES analysis, the segregation phenomena of Cr in the specimen was found much more than those of other elements. And also, the sodium compounds formed by sodium-water reaction and deposited onto the leak site of specimen were observed by EPMA analysis and SEM photograph. It is postulated that the corrosion products could be precipitated to form mixed Na Fe Cr compounds.

  • This paper presents the verification and validation (V&V) of the STREAM/RAST-K 2.0 code system for a pressurized water reactor (PWR) analysis. A lattice physics code STREAM and a nodal diffusion code RAST-K 2.0 have been developed by a computational reactor physics and experiment laboratory (CORE) of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) for an accurate two-step PWR analysis. The calculation modules of each code were already verified against various benchmark problems, whereas this paper focuses on the V&V of linked code system. Three PWR type reactor cores, OPR-1000, three-loop Westinghouse reactor core, and APR-1400, are selected as V&V target plants. This code system, for verification, is compared against the conventional code systems used for the calculations in nuclear design reports (NDRs) and validated against measured plant data. Compared parameters are as follows: critical boron concentration (CBC), axial shape index (ASI), assembly-wise power distribution, burnup distribution and peaking factors. STREAM/RAST-K 2.0 shows the RMS error of critical boron concentration within 20 ppm, and the RMS error of assembly power within 1.34% for all the cycles of all reactors.

  • Stemming is a process applied to blast holes to prevent gases from escaping during detonation. A stemming material helps confine the explosive energy for longer and increases rock fragmentation. This study developed a stemming material based on a shear-thickening fluid (STF) that reacts to dynamic shock. Two blasting experiments were conducted to Field-verify the performance of the STF-based stemming material. In the first experiment, the pressure inside the blast hole was directly measured based on applying the stemming material. In the second field verification, tunnel blasting was performed, and the blasting results of sand stemming and, that of the STF-based stemming case were compared. The measurement results of the pressure in the blast hole showed that when the STF-based stemming material was applied, the pressure at the top of the blast hole was lower than in the sand stemming case, and the stemming ejection was also lower. The results of the field application verify that the excavation performance of the STF-based stemming case in the tunnel blasting was superior to that of the sand stemming case.

  • In this paper are presented main power and gasdynamic characteristics of C-l6VK hypersonic test cell of Research Test Center of CIAM. Gasdynamic adjustment of the C-l6VK test cell was carried out with the working section constructed on scheme of Ramjet/scramjet test in free stream. Gasdynamic adjustment was conducted stage by stage in tile following sequence. First, check and preparation of all technical systems and checking measuring system. Than determination of the characteristics of test cell on cold (without the heating of air at entrance) regime and determination of the characteristics of test cell on regimes with the heating of air. Finally determination of tile characteristics of test cell with the loading of the working part by object. On tile final stage of gasdynamic adjustment two experiments with tile axisymmetric Scramjet model loaded into the working part of test cell were conducted. The first experiment was conducted with the purpose of determination of flow parameters with the object leaded into the working part and verification of experiment cyclogram. The second experiment was conducted with injection of hydrogen into the combustion chamber of object, that is tile conditions on test cell simulated Scramjet flight Mach number M = 6. Such methodology of gasdynamic adjustment allows to determine influence of experimental object on flow parameters in the working part at different conditions of experiment (with the burning in combustion chamber of object and without the homing), and also to compare flow characteristics in the object duct.

  • The performance of event-driven logic simulation frequently used for VLSI design verification depends on the data structures for event queues. This paper improves the existing Timing Wheel as a data structure for an event queue. In case of the use of B+ tree, an efficient node degree is also presented based on the experiment results. A new Timing Wheel index structure, which eliminates the insertion and deletion overhead of B+ tree, is proposed and analyzed.

  • In this study, the method to determine the values of both bed-sand scale and time scale of movable bed hydraulic model experiments on beach degormation has been proposed and the results of the experiments reveal the verification of the similarity between the proto type and the model.

  • Many products related to automobile and airplane industry have been manufactured by semi-solid forging. In this paper finite element analysis of product by combined extrusion in semi-solid state was performed and its experimental verification using A356 was conducted. distribution of solid fraction was analyzed and compared with the experimental microstructure in the product. In addition, distribution of temperature in the product was analysed by finite element method.

  • In this paper, the depth and attenuation coefficient are estimated from the mutilayered liver tissue which contained a inhomogeneous one using reflected ultrasonic signals and the abnormal one is detected quantitatively. Regarding a liver tissue as several reflectors, we analyzed each one by the frequency spectral difference method and discussed its attenuation characteristics. For the verification of this method, the liver pantom and acryle are used. And also we proved the usefulness through the experiment.
