A variety of research efforts, using advanced wireless communication technologies, have been made to develop more reliable traffic information system. This study presents a novel decentralized traffic information system based on vehicle infrastructure integration (VII). A major objective of this study was also to devise a methodology for determining appropriate spacing of roadside equipment (RSE) to fully exploit the benefits of the proposed VII-based traffic information system. Evaluation of travel time estimation accuracy was conducted with various RSE spacings and the market penetration rates of equipped vehicle. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to obtain individual vehicle travel information for the evaluation. In addition, the ANOVA tests were conducted to draw statistically significant results of simulation analyses in determining the RSE spacing. It is expected that the proposed methodology will be a valuable precursor to implementing capability-enhanced next generation traffic information systems under the forthcoming ubiquitous transportation environment.

The study on 'support for V2V(Vehicle to Vehicle) services based on LTE sidelink' has been carried out in 3GPP RAN working group. The conventional LTE sidelink technology is not adequate for high speed V2V communications because the conventional DM-RS(Demodulation Reference signal) structure is developed for pedestrian environment. While the typical speed of pedestrian environment is 3km/h, that of V2V communications is 120 km/h and the information on channel estimation is not sufficient with legacy DM-RS structure. In this paper, improved DM-RS structures for V2V communications that have rapid channel variation are introduced and the performance of channel estimation accuracy is analyzed. Simulation results show that the performance improvement of channel estimation can be achieved based on extended sub-carrier spacing structure resulted from reduced inter-carrier interference. However, the extended sub-carrier spacing requires the longer cyclic prefix and higher overhead. As a results of considerations on DM-RS modification, the sub-carrier spacing is maintained and the high density of DM-RS is applied for V2V communications.

Increased bus traffic leads inefficiency at near-side bus stops in median exclusive bus lane because buses are waiting for a signal does not have a vehicle arrived. This study suggests a method for estimating a proper spacing between bus stops and signalized intersection to prevent the inefficiency. We modified the Poisson model for a proper spacing by using both dwell time and waiting time of signal instead of using dwell time only. The waiting time of signal changes by spacing and it was measured using micro simulation program. The iterative algorithm using the change of waiting time of signal was also suggested. By applying the proposed method, measure waiting time by simulation and iterative algorithm, the spacing of near-side bus stops, proper spacing is suggested according to flow rate level.

The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum spacing of rail joint for a personal rapid transit(PRT) track system, and to compare the results with the normal rail and rail joint by performing the finite element analysis(FEA) and field measurements using actual vehicles. Based on the FEA and field measurement results compared, the optimum spacing of the rail joints was calculated to be maximum of 1.20m based on the rail displacement. The vertical displacement of the normal rail was higher than that of the rail joint at a spacing of 1.0m, but it was considered that the vehicle riding performance and serviceability of track would be improved in terms of the stability of the train due to similar to rail defection between normal rail and rail joint. Also, because of the proposed rail joint spacing in this study was longer than the current rail joint spacing, the economic effect would be expected by decreasing the amount of sleepers.
In the recent times, dimensions of heavy load carrying vehicle have changed significantly incorporating structural flexibility in vehicle body. The present paper outlines a procedure for the estimation of bridge response statistics considering structural bending modes of the vehicle. Bridge deck roughness has been considered to be non homogeneous random process in space. Influence of pre cambering of bridge surface and settlement of approach slab on the dynamic behavior of the bridge has been studied. A parametric study considering vehicle axle spacing, mass, speed, vehicle flexibility, deck unevenness and eccentricity of vehicle path have been conducted. Dynamic amplification factor (DAF) of the bridge response has been obtained for several of combination of bridge-vehicle parameters. The present study reveals that flexible modes of vehicle can reduce dynamic response of the bridge to the extent of 30-37% of that caused by rigid vehicle model. However, sudden change in the bridge surface profile leads to significant amount of increment in the bridge dynamic response even if flexible bending modes remain active. The eccentricity of vehicle path and flexural/torsional rigidity ratios plays a significant role in dynamic amplification of bridge response.
Nowadays, with the advancement of computers, computer simulation linked with VR (Virtual Reality) technology has become a useful method for designing the automotive driving system. In this paper, the VR simulation system was developed to investigate the driving performances of the ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) equipped with an ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system. For this purpose, VR environment which generates visual and sound information of the vehicle, road, facilities, and terrain was organized for the realistic driving situation. Mathematical models of vehicle dynamic analysis, which includes the ACC algorithm, have been constructed for computer simulation. The ACC algorithm modulates the throttle and the brake functions of vehicles to regulate their speeds so that the vehicles can keep proper spacing. Also, the real-time simulation algorithm synchronizes vehicle dynamics simulation with VR rendering. With the developed VR simulation system, several scenarios are applied to evaluate the adaptive cruise controlled vehicle for various driving situations.

Nowadays, to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the automotive driving system, the computer simulation linked up with VR(Virtual Reality) technology is treated as the useful method with the improvement of computing ability. In this paper, the VR simulation system has been developed to investigate the driving characteristics of the ASV(Advanced Safety Vehicle) equipped with an ACC(Adaptive Cruise Control) system. For the purpose, VR environment which generates 3D graphic and sound information of the vehicle, the road, the facilities, and the terrain has been organized for the driving reality. Mathematical models of vehicle dynamic analysis including the ACC model have been constructed for computer simulation. The ACC modulates the throttle and brake functions to regulate the vehicle speed so that vehicles could keep proper spacing. Also, the real-time simulation algorithm synchronizes vehicle dynamic simulation with the graphic rendering. With the developed VR simulation system, simple scenarios are applied to analyze the dynamic characteristics. It is shown that the VR simulation system could be useful to evaluate the adaptive cruise controlled vehicle on various driving conditions.
This paper considers the problem of longitudinal control of a platoon of automotive vehicles on a straight lane of a highway and proposes control laws in the event of loss of communication between the lead vehicle and the other vehicles in the platoon. Since safety plays a key role in the development of an Automated Highway System, fault-tolerant control is vital. In this paper, we develop a control algorithm in vehicle platooning and prove that this control algorithm is stable for certain class of faults such as parameter uncertainties. The performance of the controller is demonstrated through a series of simulations incorporating various vehicles and AHS faults. Results of simulation shows that the vehicles have good performance in spite of simple automotive and AHS failure, such as actuator failure, that is to say, engine input failure, communication failure between lead vehicle and the another vehicles.
A robust adaptive technique for the longitudinal control of a platoon of automated vehicles is presented. A nonlinear model is used to represent the vehicle dynamics of each vehicle within the platoon. The external disturbance such as wind gust and a disturbance term due to engine transmission variations and so on are considered. The state observer is used to avoid direct measurement of the relative velocity or acceleration between the controlled and leading vehicles or the controlled vehicle's acceleration. It is shown that platoon stability can be recovered in operation even if a speed dependent spacing policy is adopted, which incorporates a constant time headway in addition to the constant distance. The simulation results demonstrate excellent tracking even in the presence of disturbances.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is one of key features on intelligent Transportation System(ITS). In ACC, the steering is done by a driver, but the engine throttle valve and the brake are controlled electronically. The relative velocity and distance from the preceeding vehicle are measured by radars or image processing units and relevant vehicular spacing is maintained in ACC control systems. In this study, vehicle longitudinal dynamics are modeled to simulate vehicle longitudinal maneuver and to design longtitudinal controllers for ACC vehicles. The control algorithm is designed based on the modeled vehicle longitudinal dynamics using a non-linear sliding mode control method. To verity the performance of the control algorithm, a real time numerical simulation program is developed on a Silicon Graphics workstation using C-language . A real time graphic program is alos develpe and integrated with the numerical simulation program.
