Determination of Fleet Size for LTL Transportation With Dynamic Demand

  • This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for LTL (less -than-truckload) transportation with dynamic demand for on-time supply of the parts between the assembly line in an automobile company and its part suppliers in Korea. The vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea in general can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company -owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrusts the company with its operation, and rented truck (outsourcing) . With the forecasted monthly production data a year, a heuristic algorithm is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost, which is based on the solution technologies used in the aggregate production planning and vehicle routing problem. Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company transports parts for the automobile company.

  • This paper provides a short description of the COMPASS-model which is a concept for the simulation of multiway systems. The focus of the COMPASS-model is to offer an opportunity to investigate the effects of redistribution strategies on logistic and monetary values in a system of returnable transport items (RTI). The modeling concept consists of five modules: topology, system load, distribution, redistribution, cost. It includes the integration of highly sophisticated evolutionary algorithms for the optimal solving of complex capacitated vehicle routing problems (CVRP) which are typical for RTI-systems. The results of first experiments with a COMPASS-based prototype are repeated. They reveal some basic regularities in RTI-systems.

  • 본 논문은 차량운행경로문제(Vehicle Routing Problem)의 기본적인 정보가 되는 Origin-Destination (OD) Matrix 의 생성에 관한 문제를 다룬다. OD Matrix 를 만들기 위해서는 몇 개의 지점으로부터 몇 개의 지점(some-to-some)까지의 최단 거리를 계산해야 한다. 이를 위해 Dijkstra 알고리듬과 같은 one-to-all 알고리듬을 반복하여 사용할 수 있고 Floyd-Washall 알고리듬과 같은 all-to-all 알고리듬을 사용할 수 있으며 some-to-some 을 위해 고안된 알고리듬을 사용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 알고리듬들이 실제 도로 네트워크의 OD Matrix 를 생성할 때 어떤 성능을 보이는지 비교 분석한다.

An improved version of Minty's algorithm to solve TSP with penalty function

  • The traveling salesman problem has been studied for many years since the model can be used for various applications such as vehicle routing, job sequencing, clustering a data array, and so on. In this paper one of the typical exact algorithms for TSP, Minty's, will be modified to improve the performance of the algorithm on the applications without losing simplicity. The Little's algorithm gives good results, however, the simple and plain Minty's algorithm for solving shortest-route problems has the most intuitive appeal. The suggested Minty's modification is based on the creation of penalty-values on the matrix of a TSP. Computer experiments are made to verify the effectiveness of the modification.

  • 본 논문에서는 도시 기반의 VANET 환경에서 차량간의 안정적인 통신을 위한 차량 밀도를 이용한 라우팅 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 라우팅 기법에서 차량들은 비콘 메시지와 도로 정보 테이블을 이용하여 자신이 속해있는 도로의 차량 밀도를 계산하고 있다. 소스 차량은 이 정보를 이용하여 안정적인 경로를 탐색하고 설정된 경로를 통해 패킷을 보낸다. 제안하는 기법을 평가하기 위해 NS-2를 이용하여 GPSR과 비교 실험을 하였고, 그 결과 GPSR보다 우수한 성능 결과를 보였다.

  • In today's rapidly changing business environment, quality of responsiveness to customer requirements for short order cycles and on time delivery is becoming more important and considered as one of critical success factors in supply chain management. Yet despite its importance on reducing transportation cost and improving customer service, little attention has been given to the transportation planning system in Korea SI industry. In this paper, we present development of transportation planning system especially to deal with vehicle routing problem which has the goal to minimize the costs of daily transportation operation and to maximize customer delivery service. The system architecture with other enterprise application is presented and real-world constraints are well incorporated into the system by combining constraints programming and meta heuristics.

  • This research is concerned with buffer management in a multi-cell FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) with an AGVS(Automated Guided Vehicle System). To reduce blocking and starving caused by breakdowns, variablility in process times, and diversity of part routing, buffer is needed. Due to the high per unit buffer cost, which primarily consists of floor space and equipment cost, the total capacity of buffers in an FMS is very limited. Therefore, proper buffer management can provide a high system efficiency. This paper presents a buffer management model for a multi-cell FMS with an AGVS and a simulation study to compare the proposed model to a conventional buffer management model in a job shop FMS.

Modified Genetic Operators for the TSP

  • For a long time, genetic algorithms have been recognized as a new method to solve difficult and complex problems and the performance of genetic algorithms depends on genetic operators, especially crossover operator. Various problems like the traveling salesman problem, the transportation problem or the job shop problem, in logistics engineering can be modeled as a sequencing problem This paper proposes modified genetic crossover operators to be used at various sequencing problems and uses the traveling salesman problem to be applied to a real world problem like the delivery problem and the vehicle routing problem as a benchmark problem Because the proposed operators use parental information as well as network information, they could show better efficiency in performance and computation time than conventional operators.

A New Ship Scheduling Set Packing Model Considering Limited Risk

  • In this paper, we propose a new ship scheduling set packing model considering limited risk or variance. The set packing model is used in many applications, such as vehicle routing, crew scheduling, ship scheduling, cutting stock and so on. As long as the ship scheduling is concerned, there exits many unknown external factors such as machine breakdown, climate change and transportation cost fluctuation. However, existing ship scheduling models have not considered those factors apparently. We use a quadratic set packing model to limit the variance of expected cost of ship scheduling problems under stochastic spot rates. Set problems are NP-complete, and additional quadratic constraint makes the problems much harder. We implement Kelley's cutting plane method to replace the hard quadratic constraint by many linear constrains and use branch-and-bound algorithm to get the optimal integral solution. Some meaningful computational results and comments are provided.

Comparison of Three Evolutionary Algorithms: GA, PSO, and DE

  • This paper focuses on three very similar evolutionary algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and differential evolution (DE). While GA is more suitable for discrete optimization, PSO and DE are more natural for continuous optimization. The paper first gives a brief introduction to the three EA techniques to highlight the common computational procedures. The general observations on the similarities and differences among the three algorithms based on computational steps are discussed, contrasting the basic performances of algorithms. Summary of relevant literatures is given on job shop, flexible job shop, vehicle routing, location-allocation, and multimode resource constrained project scheduling problems.
