This paper presents pedestrian recognition to improve performance for vehicle safety system or surveillance system. Pedestrian detection method using HOG (Histograms of Oriented Gradients) has showed 90% recognition rate. But if someone takes a picture in the rain, the image may be distorted by rain streaks and recognition rate goes down by 62%. To solve this problem, we applied image decomposition method using MCA (Morphological Component Analysis). In this case, rain removal method improves recognition rate from 62% to 70%. However, it is difficult to apply conventional image decomposition method using MCA on vehicle safety system or surveillance system as conventional method is too slow for real-time system. To alleviate this issue, we propose a rain removal method by using low-pass filter and DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform). The DCT helps separate the image into rain components. The image is removed rain components by Butterworth filtering. Experimental results show that our method achieved 90% of recognition rate. In addition, the proposed method had accelerated processing time to 17.8ms which is acceptable for real-time system.

The number of pedestrian traffic accident fatalities is three times the number of car accidents in South Korea. Serious accidents are caused especially at intersections when the vehicle turns to their right. Various pedestrian collision warning services have been developed, but they are insufficient to prevent dangerous pedestrians. In this study, P2CWS is developed to warn approaching vehicles based on the pedestrians' characteristics. In order to evaluate the performance of the service, actual pedestrian data were collected at the intersection of Daejeon, and comparative analysis was carried out according to pedestrian characteristics. As a result, the performance analysis showed a higher accordance when the characteristics of the pedestrian is considered. Accordingly, we can conclude that identifying pedestrian characteristics in predicting the pedestrian crossing is important.

Augmented reality (AR) is currently being applied actively to commercial products, and various types of intelligent AR systems combining both the Global Positioning System and computer-vision technologies are being developed and commercialized. This paper suggests an in-vehicle head-up display (HUD) system that is combined with AR technology. The proposed system recognizes driving-safety information and offers it to the driver. Unlike existing HUD systems, the system displays information registered to the driver's view and is developed for the robust recognition of obstacles under bad weather conditions. The system is composed of four modules: a ground obstacle detection module, an object decision module, an object recognition module, and a display module. The recognition ratio of the driving-safety information obtained by the proposed AR-HUD system is about 73%, and the system has a recognition speed of about 15 fps for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Pedestrian safety was recently highlighted with a yellow carpet, a yellow-colored pavement material prepared for children waiting for signals for pedestrian crossing, without validation of its efficiency in practice. It was a promising device likely to assist highway safety by stimulating pedestrian to step on the yellow-colored area; it was generally called nudge effects. This paper delivers a study conducted to check the effectiveness of yellow carpet in three different aspects in vehicle driver's perspective by applying the newly introduced information technology (IT) service: Visual Attention Software (VAS). It was assumed that VAS developed by 3M in the United States should be able explain the Korean drivers' visual reaction behaviors since technology embedded in VAS was developed based on and proved by other various international countries and continents in the world. A set of pictures was taken at thirteen different field sites in seven school zone areas in the Seoul metropolitan area before and after the installation of a yellow carpet, respectively. Sets of those pictures were analyzed with VAS, and the results were compared based on the selective safety measures: the likely focusing on standing pedestrians (waiting for a pedestrian's green signal time) affected by its background (yellow-colored pavement) contrasting him or her. The test results from a set of before-and-after comparison analyses showed that the placement of yellow carpet would (1) increase 71% of driver's visual attention on pedestrian crossing areas and (2) change the sequential order of visual attention on that area 2.4 steps ahead. The findings would enhance deployment of such promising efficiency and thus increase children safety in pedestrian crossing. The result was promising to highlight the way to support the changes in conservative traffic safety engineering field by applying the advanced IT services, while much robust research was recommended to overcome the limitation of simplification of this study.

In this paper, we propose a tracking and recognition of pedestrian/vehicle for intelligent multi-visual surveillance system. The intelligent multi-visual surveillance system consists of several fixed cameras and one calibrated PTZ camera, which automatically tracks and recognizes the detected moving objects. The fixed wide-angle cameras are used to monitor large open areas, but the moving objects on the images are too small to view in detail. But, the PTZ camera is capable of increasing the monitoring area and enhancing the image quality by tracking and zooming in on a target. The proposed system is able to determine whether the detected moving objects are pedestrian/vehicle or not using the SVM. In order to reduce the tracking error, an improved camera calibration algorithm between the fixed cameras and the PTZ camera is proposed. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

In shuttle vans designed to transport children, the recognition of a child's approach and departure is very important. Ultrasonic sensors are generally used for a short distance around a vehicle. Although ultrasonic sensors are cheaper than other ADAS sensors, the number of sensors installed in a van should be optimized. In order to recognize the presence of a child around a shuttle van, this paper proposes the placement of ultrasonic sensors in the van. Considering the turning radius of the van and the distance from each sensor to a child, collision risk is classified as 'safe', 'warning', and 'danger'. The sensor placement and the recognition algorithm are verified in a virtual driving environment.
As research on autonomous driving technology becomes more active, various studies on signal recognition of traffic lights are also being conducted. When recognizing traffic lights with different purposes and shapes, such as pedestrian traffic lights, vehicle-only traffic lights, and right-turn traffic lights, existing classification methods may cause misrecognition problems. Therefore, in this study, we studied a model that allows accurate signal recognition by subdividing the classification of signals according to the purpose and type of traffic lights. A signal recognition model was created by classifying traffic lights according to their shape and purpose into horizontal, vertical, right turn, etc., and by comparing them with the existing signal recognition model based on YOLOv5, it was confirmed that more correct and accurate recognition was possible.

In recent years, the interests and needs of the Pedestrian Protection System (PPS), which is mounted on the vehicle for the purpose of traffic safety improvement is increasing. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian candidate window extraction and unit cell histogram based HOG descriptor calculation methods. At pedestrian detection candidate windows extraction stage, the bright ratio of pedestrian and its circumference region, vertical edge projection, edge factor, and PCA reconstruction image are used. Dalal's HOG requires pixel based histogram calculation by Gaussian weights and trilinear interpolation on overlapping blocks, But our method performs Gaussian down-weight and computes histogram on a per-cell basis, and then the histogram is combined with the adjacent cell, so our method can be calculated faster than Dalal's method. Our PCA reconstruction error based pedestrian detection candidate window extraction method efficiently classifies background based on the difference between pedestrian's head and shoulder area. The proposed method improves detection speed compared to the conventional HOG just using image without any prior information from camera calibration or depth map obtained from stereo cameras.

Currently, autonomous vehicle markets are commercializing a third-level autonomous vehicle, but there is a possibility that an accident may occur even during fully autonomous driving due to stability issues. In fact, autonomous vehicles have recorded 81 accidents. This is because, unlike level 3, autonomous vehicles after level 4 have to judge and respond to emergency situations by themselves. Therefore, this paper proposes a vehicle crisis detection system(VCDS) that collects and stores information outside the vehicle through CNN, and uses the stored information and vehicle sensor data to output the crisis situation of the vehicle as a number between 0 and 1. The VCDS consists of two modules. The vehicle external situation collection module collects surrounding vehicle and pedestrian data using a CNN-based neural network model. The vehicle crisis situation determination module detects a crisis situation in the vehicle by using the output of the vehicle external situation collection module and the vehicle internal sensor data. As a result of the experiment, the average operation time of VESCM was 55ms, R-CNN was 74ms, and CNN was 101ms. In particular, R-CNN shows similar computation time to VESCM when the number of pedestrians is small, but it takes more computation time than VESCM as the number of pedestrians increases. On average, VESCM had 25.68% faster computation time than R-CNN and 45.54% faster than CNN, and the accuracy of all three models did not decrease below 80% and showed high accuracy.
Currently most of the vision-based structural identification research focus either on structural input (vehicle location) estimation or on structural output (structural displacement and strain responses) estimation. The structural condition assessment at global level just with the vision-based structural output cannot give a normalized response irrespective of the type and/or load configurations of the vehicles. Combining the vision-based structural input and the structural output from non-contact sensors overcomes the disadvantage given above, while reducing cost, time, labor force including cable wiring work. In conventional traffic monitoring, sometimes traffic closure is essential for bridge structures, which may cause other severe problems such as traffic jams and accidents. In this study, a completely non-contact structural identification system is proposed, and the system mainly targets the identification of bridge unit influence line (UIL) under operational traffic. Both the structural input (vehicle location information) and output (displacement responses) are obtained by only using cameras and computer vision techniques. Multiple cameras are synchronized by audio signal pattern recognition. The proposed system is verified with a laboratory experiment on a scaled bridge model under a small moving truck load and a field application on a footbridge on campus under a moving golf cart load. The UILs are successfully identified in both bridge cases. The pedestrian loads are also estimated with the extracted UIL and the predicted weights of pedestrians are observed to be in acceptable ranges.
