Reconstruction of the past vegetational changes of Korea in connection with climate changes enables to understand the impacts of past and future global warming on alpine vegetation. Despite the early appearance of the cold-tolerant vegetation since the Mesozoic Era. the occurrence of warmth-tolerant vegetation during the Oligocene and Miocene implies that most of alpine and subalpine vegetations have been confined to the alpine and subalpine belts of northern Korean Peninsula. The presence of cold-episodes during the Pleistocene. however. might have caused a general southward and downslope expansions of cold-tolerant alpine and subalpine vegetation. But the climatic warming trend during the Holocene or post-glacial period eventually has isolated cold-tolerant alpine and subalpine vegetation mainly in the northern Korea. but also on scattered high mountains in the southern Korea. The presence of numerous arctic-alpine and alpine plants on the alpine and subalpine belts is mainly due to their relative degree of sensitivity to high summer temperatures. Global warming would cause important changes in species composition and altitudinal distributional pattern. The altitudinal migration of temperate vegetation upward caused by climatic warming would eventually devastate alpine plants.

The pollen analysis was performed targeting the valley plain alluvium of Jangjae-ri, Asan area in order to clarify the climate and vegetation environment of the Last glacial maximum and the Late glacial in terms of Gokgyo River Watershed In Asan-City, Korea. The sample collection point gets included in the current deciduous broadleaf forest zone (south cool temperate zone). The results are as follows. (1) The vegetation environment of about 19,300-14,100yrB.P. at the investigation area is mainly classified into YJ-I period and YJ-II period while YJ-Ia period is classified once again into YJ-Ia period and YJ-Ib period. YJ-Ia period (19,300-17,500yrB.P.) is correlated with the Last Glacial Maximum while the vegetation at the time has relatively a little wide distribution area of grassland compared to the forest and the forest vegetation of this time period is the mixed conifer and deciduous broad-leaved forest. YJ-Ib period (15,400-14,750yrB.P.) is correlated with the Late glacial (or the Last Glacial Maximum) and the distribution area of grassland became wider compared to the forest. While the forest vegetation of this time period is the mixed conifer and deciduous broad-leaved forest, a difference exists in terms of the dominant tree species. YJ-II period (about 14,650-14,100yrB.P.) is correlated with the Last glacial while the distribution area of grassland became even wider than the forest compared to the YJ-Ib in case of the vegetation at the time and the forest vegetation of this time period is the coniferous forest. (2) Both YJ-I period and YJ-II period were relatively cold and dry compared the End of Late Glacial (about 12,000-10,000yrB.P.)~Early Holocene (10,000-8,500yrB.P.), Also, YJ-II period was relatively colder than the YJ-I period and the YJ-Ib period was relatively more humid than the YJ-Ia period.
Phytosociological invesstigation of the forest vegetation was carried out in Oinrodo island at the period from June 5th 1990 to June 10th 1990 by Braun-Blanquet's method. The forest vegetation was classified into 10 communities, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunsbergii, Neolitsea sericea, Quercus glauca-Actinodaphne lancifolia, Pinus thunbergii, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Cryptomeria japonica, Quercus acutissima, Quercus variabilis, and Carpinus coreana community. Based on the classification of communities, the actual vegetation map was drawn in 1 : 50,000 scale.

The variation of groundwater by wave, tide and precipitation conditions is closely related to the vegetation environment at the natural vegetation and sandy based beach, and it has a significant impact on the vegetation development and ground stabilization. In this study, the water temperature, electrical conductivity, and pressure were monitored at five observational stations normal to the Jinu-do(Island) shoreline of Nakdong river estuary from March 2012 to September 2014 (approximately 799 days) with the aim of measuring the variation in groundwater-table characteristics. The purpose of the study was to identify factors (tide, wave etc.) affecting groundwater-table variation using time series and correlation analysis, and to record spatial variations in the groundwater level and electrical conductivity as a result of storm events. The observational station in the intertidal zone was strongly affected by wave period and tide level. During the storm period, the groundwater-table and electrical conductivity were stabilized at the edge of sand dunes, vegetation, and areas of transition between freshwater and seawater.

This study was carried out to analyze comparison of carbon storage and physicochemical properties of vegetation soil for extensive green rooftop established at Seoul National University in september 2013. For this study, 42 plots were made by 2 kinds of vegetation soil including A-type and B-type. A-type vegetation soil plots were made of 90% perlite and 10% humus and B-type vegetation soil plots were made of 60% perlite, 20% vermiculite, 10% coco peat and 10% humus. This study used 6 kinds of plants which are Aster koraiensis, Sedum takesimense, Zoysia japonica Steud, Euonymus japonica, Rhododendron indicum SWEET and Ligustrum obtusifolium. Field research was carried out in 11 months after planting. Physiochemical properties of B-type vegetation soil plots were better than A-type vegetation soil plots in every way and soil carbon content was also higher at B-type vegetation soil plots as well. B-type vegetation soil plots were maintained 10 to 20% higher soil water content than A-type vegetation soil plots of the study period. The species of herb which showed the best carbon storage was Zoysia japonica Steud at B-type vegetation soil plots. The species of shrub which showed the best carbon storage was Ligustrum obtusifolium at B-type vegetation soil plots. Plants generally showed better growth at B-type vegetation soil plots and B-type vegetation soil plots were higher than A-type vegetation soil plots in soil carbon stock.
Phytosociological investigation of the forest vegeation was carried out in Kumo archipelago at the period of May 21th 1990 to May 29th 1990 by Braun-Blanquet's method. The forest vegetation was classified into 7 communities, Camellia japonica, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Camellia japonica-Pinus thunbergii, Camellia japonica-Torreya nucifera, Carpinus coreana and Quercus acutissima community. Based on the classification of communities, the actual vegetation maps were drawn in 1 : 50,000 scale.
Changes in physico-chemical properties and major nutrient contents were investigated in the soil of paddy fields during fallow period. Weed vegetation change in the fallow paddy fields was also examined. As the fallow period became longer, organic matter content in the paddy soil has gradually increased. Soil pH of the paddy fields has not changed until three years of fallow period and thereafter slightly increased. Cation exchange capacity of the paddy soil, and exchangeable N, K, Ca and Mg contents in the soil tended to decrease until three years of fallow period and then increase with the prolonged fallow period. As the fallow period became longer, available $P_2O_5$ content in the paddy soil has continuously decreased. Available $SiO_2$ content in the paddy soil has not changed until three years of fallow period and thereafter increased. The vegetation in the fallow paddy fields have mostly been occupied by the weeds of the Gramineae, Cyperaceae, and Compositae. As the fallow period became longer, the weeds of the Polygonaceae and Juncaceae have increased, whereas the weeds of the Leguminosae, Commelinaceae, Pontederiaceae, and Onagraceae have gradually disappeared. However, the weeds of the Gramineae and Cyperaceae have always been dominant in the paddy fields during the fallow paddy period.
This study refers to develop a semi-automatic extraction of agricultural land use and vegetation information using high resolution satellite images. Data of IKONOS satellite image (May 25 of 2001) and QuickBird satellite image (May 1 of 2006) which resembles with the spatial resolution and spectral characteristics of KOMPSAT3. The precise agricultural land use classification was tried using ISODATA unsupervised classification technique and the result was compared with on-screen digitizing land use accompanying with field investigation. For the extraction of vegetation information, three crops of paddy, com and red pepper were selected and the spectral characteristics were collected during each growing period using ground spectroradiometer. The vegetation indices viz. RVI, NDVI, ARVI, and SAVI for the crops were evaluated. The evaluation process is under development using the ERDAS IMAGINE Spatial Modeler Tool.
The seasonal variations of the marine algal community were detected with quadrat method during May, 1974-May, 1975 at several stations in the Kwang Yang Bay. Considering the environmental factors such as salinity and water current, etc., and algal vegetation, the Bay was divided into 3 sections; Section I-Myodo and the adjacent area; Section II-Eomnamuseom and the adjacent area; Section III-inlet of the Bay from Odongdo, Yeosu. The dominant species, shown by 5-grades coverage and bimonthly investigations, appear in the order of Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Chondria crassicaulis (Mar.)>Ulva pertusa(May)>U. pertusa (July)>U. pertusa and Gigartina intermedia(Sept.)> Sarg. thunbergii and Gelidium pusillum (Nov.) in Section I, and Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Ulva pertusa and Hizikia fusiforme (Mar.)>U. pertusa and Sarg. thunbergii(May)>Chondria crassicaulis (Sept.)>Ch. crassicaulis (Nov.) in Section II. The members such as Srgassum thunbergii, Gelidium pusillum, G. divaricatum, Hizikia fusiforme, Carpopeltis affinis, and Chondria crassicaulis show the most luxuriant period of growth in winter (Nov.-Mar.), while Ulva pertusa shows the period in May. However, considering the dry weight of total vegetation, the most luxuriant period apperas in May and the poorest one in July. The total dry weight of the vegetation in Section II is about 3.2 times more than the one in Section I.
Changes in land cover or land use, such as changes in forest area, can cause changes in water and energy circulation, ultimately affecting overall hydrological cycle including stream flow, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and base flow. In this study, the changes of the hydrological processes over the past long period were simulated by using large-scale surface hydrologic model along with various soil, land use, vegetation, and meteorological data. For this purpose, this study simulated and evaluated the changes in the hydrological cycle for the past 50 years (1955-2010) in East Asia including China, Japan and South Korea. In particular, this study used the land cover maps which can properly reflect the vegetation condition for each simulation period. As results, the mean runoff ratio of China was estimated to be 47.0% over the entiree period, 62.7% in Japan and 49.4% in South Korea. The mean soil moisture of China was estimated to be 22.2%, 35.6% in Japan and 23.9% in South Korea. Finally, the mean evapotranspiration rate was estimated to be 52.7% in China, 37.3% in Japan and 50.4% in South Korea. Especially, in China, the hydrological cycle was found to be changed very much for the entire simulation period. However, in Japan, the hydrological cycle was found to be very stable for the entire simulation period. The hydrological cycle was also found to become stable mainly due to the stabilization of the vegetation.
