  • In this paper, we propose a new mixed finite element method, called the characteristics-mixed method, for approximating the solution to Burgers' equation. This method is based upon a space-time variational form of Burgers' equation. The hyperbolic part of the equation is approximated along the characteristics in time and the diffusion part is approximated by a mixed finite element method of lowest order. The scheme is locally conservative since fluid is transported along the approximate characteristics on the discrete level and the test function can be piecewise constant. Our analysis show the new method approximate the scalar unknown and the vector flux optimally and simultaneously. We also show this scheme has much smaller time-truncation errors than those of standard methods. Numerical example is presented to show that the new scheme is easily implemented, shocks and boundary layers are handled with almost no oscillations. One of the contributions of the paper is to show how the optimal error estimates in $L^2(\Omega)$ are obtained which are much more difficult than in the standard finite element methods. These results seem to be new in the literature of finite element methods.

  • In this paper, Dielectirc waveguides have been calculated using the vector finite element method. This method is introduced that allows propagation constants and electric field distribution to be computed directly. In order to obtain more accurate solutions, Second order vector elements are proposed.

  • In order to enhance torque density of five-phase permanent magnetic synchronous motor with third harmonic injection for electric vehicles (EVs) applications, optimum seeking method for injection ratio of third harmonic was proposed adopting theoretical derivation and finite element analysis method, under the constraint of same amplitude for current and air-gap flux. By five-dimension space vector decomposition, the mathematic model in two orthogonal space plane, $d_1-q_1$ and $d_3-q_3$, was deduced. And the corresponding dual-plane vector control method was accomplished to independently control fundamental and third harmonic currents in each vector plane. A five-phase PMSM prototype with quasi-trapezoidal flux pattern and its fivephase voltage source inverter were designed. Also, the dual-plane vector control was digitized in a single XC3S1200E FPGA. Simulation and experimental results prove that using the proposed optimum seeking method, the torque density of five-phase PMSM is enhanced by 20%, without any increase of power converter capacity, machine size and iron core saturation.

  • This paper describes an analysis of the three-dimensional eddy current problems by the finite element method using magnetic vector potential and electric scalar potential. The finite element formulation uses first-order shape functions and tetrahedral elements. The validity of this formalation is ensured as the result of the sphere conductor model problem in a sinusoidal magnetic field.

  • Detecting the damage of indeterminate trusses is of major importance in the literature. This paper proposes a quick approach in this regard, utilizing a precise mathematical approach based on Finite Element Method. Different to a general two-step method defined in the literature essentially based on optimization approach, this method consists of three steps including Damage-Suspected Element Identification step, Imminent Damaged Element Identification step, and finally, Damage Severity Detection step and does not need any optimizing algorithm. The first step focuses on the identification of damage-suspected elements using an index based on modal residual force vector. In the second step, imminent damage elements are identified among the damage-suspected elements detected in the previous step using a specific technique. Ultimately, in the third step, a novel relation is derived to calculate the damage severity of each imminent damaged element. To show the efficiency and quick function of the proposed method, three examples including a 25-bar planar truss, a 31-bar planar truss, and a 52-bar space truss are studied; results of which indicate that the method is innovatively capable of suitably detecting, for indeterminate trusses, not only damaged elements but also their individual damage severity by carrying out solely one analysis.

  • The vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with stiffeners is formulated by using the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the successive transmission of stiffness coefficients which are defined as the relationship between the force vector and the displacement vector at an arbitrary nodal line. In order to confirm the validity of the present method, bending vibration analysis for a rectangular plate with stiffener is carried out on a personal computer by using the present method and the finite element method (FEM). Through comparing computational results of the TSCM and the FEM, the effectivness of the TSCM from the viewpoint of computational cost, that is, computational time and storage is demonstrated.

  • It is important to model the mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In the finite element modeling, the errors can be contained from the physical parameters, the approximation of the boundary conditions, and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. Model updating using parameter modification is appropriate when the design parameter is used to analyze the input parameter like finite element method. Finite element analysis for cantilever and simply supported beams with uniform area and shape change are carried out as model updating examples. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies.

  • This paper describes an implementation of the rotational hysteresis analysis using the finite element method and a vector hysteresis model. The vector hysteresis model is extended from the magnetization-dependent Preisach model. The magnetization of each element is calculated for a given history of the rotating field. The lagging angle and the magnitude of the magnetization for an applied field are evaluated. The experimental results show that the magnetization characteristics of the magnetic materials under the rotating field can be analyzed accurately by the proposed method.

  • We report our study on the implementation of Q tensor approach into three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) numerical solver. The comparative simulation results demonstrated the possibility of a different director configuration in between Q tensor method and vector method. The comparative study confirmed that Q Tensor implementation is more appropriate for OCB analysis than the vector method.
