In this paper, we experimented and analyzed about electric fire risk assessment methods of LED lightings for outdoor. LED lighting is composed of AC power lines, AC/DC converter, DC power lines and LED lamps. There are some risk factors of electric fire in LED lighting such as short circuit between power lines or power line and ground, dielectric breakdown, leakage current, abnormal voltage inflow, poor contacts(connections), etc. As a result of this study, insulation coverings of wire was ignited due to dielectric breakdown between power lines and molten marks were formed in copper conductor. LED lighting was blown out while short circuit, beside that, electrical disorder did not occur. When abnormal voltage was inflowed, electronic components such as varistor, condenser were damaged. Partial heating was produced and insulation was melted and carbonized by arc and heating while poor contacts were happened. We expect that the results of this study would be helpful for electrical safety of LED lightings for outdoor.
In this paper, this paper discusses how to improve the power control system of cold and hot water purifiers, in particular, system protecting device against abnormal voltage. The existing power supply control system came with a protecting device composed of varistor device only for impulse-type surges. Even though the existing system senses surge other than impulse-type, the system can not be protected. Accordingly, a new type of power control system was designed to protect the system from surge and ultimately prevent electricity accidents. The power control system suggested in this paper will be designed to protect the system by sensing input voltage and discontinuing power supply by means of SSR if voltage exceeding set value is sensed. To test the designed system, surge was imposed on the existing system and processes of system failure were experimented before safety of the designed power control system was simulated via P-spice program developed by Orcad in order to examine safety and reliability of the system.
The purpose of this study is to find the causes of malfunctions and defective operation of printed circuit boards(PCBs) built into home refrigerators to perform power saving functions. This study performed an electrostatic test of a PCB built-in using an Auto Triggering system; lightning and impulse tests using an LSS-15AX; and an impulse test using an INS-400AX. From the analysis of a secondarily developed product, it was found that electrostatic discharge(ESD) caused more malfunctions and defective operations than electric overstress(EOS) due to overvoltage. As a result of increasing the condenser capacity of the PCB circuit, withstanding voltage was increased to 7.4 kV. In addition, this study changed the power saving mode and connected a varistor to the #2 pin of an IC chip. As a result, the system consisting of all specimens of a finally developed product was operated stably with an applied voltage of less than 10 kV. This study found it necessary to perform quality control at the manufacturing stage in order to reduce the occurrence of electrostatic accidents to IC chips built into a PCB.
DC accelerated aging characteristics of Pr$_{6}$O$_{11}$-based ZnO varistors, which are composed of ZnO+Pr$_{6}$O$_{11}$+CoO+Cr$_2$O$_3$+Dy$_2$O$_3$ ceramics were investigated with CoO content in the range of 0.5~5.0 mol%. The varistors doped with 1.0 mol% revealing maximum value(66.61) in the nonlinear exponent exhibited excellent stability, in which the variation rates of the varistor voltage, the nonlinear exponent and leakage current are -1.93%, -10.48%, and 288.79%, respectively, under DC accelerated aging stress, such as (0.85 V$_{1mA}$/115$^{\circ}C$/24h)+(0.90 V$_{1mA}$/12$0^{\circ}C$/24h)+(0.95 V$_{1mA}$/1$25^{\circ}C$/24h)+(0.95 V$_{1mA}$/15$0^{\circ}C$/24h). Next the varistors doped with 2.0 mol% exhibiting the nonlinear exponent of 47.39 showed high stability, ity, ability, ity,
Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are widely used as surge protectors for communication applications due to their small internal capacitance. In these days, however, they are mostly used in combined configurations, because the activation voltage required to initiate the discharge process in the GDTs for sufficient amount of time can be large enough to damage surge-sensitive protected circuits. For GDTs with a considerably high initial over-voltage value, we should limit the peak voltage using a TVS or filter. As for ZnO varistors, even though their performance for voltage restriction is excellent their applications in high-frequency communication circuits have been limited because of higher internal capacitance when compared to the GDTs. In order to develop a surge protector for communication applications by taking advantages of these two devices, we built a combination circuit that connects a GDT and a ZnO varistor along with a choke coil in common and differential modes. We describe how the applied SPDs operate in protection process steps with the actual data obtained from the residual voltage measurements at each step. The experiment results show that the surge voltage restriction with the choke coil is more effective in differential mode than in common mode.
Kinds of most frequent faults happened on overhead distribution system are the single line-to-ground fault, the line-to-line fault and the two line-to-ground fault. Occasionally, the three line-to-ground fault and the disconnection of a wire are happened in severe conditions. In this study, the single line-to-ground fault, the line-to-line fault, two line-to-ground fault on three-phase four-wire overhead distribution system were experimentally simulated and characteristics of total leakage current of distribution arrester caused by these faults were investigated. Also, the changing aspect of total leakage current of distribution arrester caused by voltage variation was investigated. In a consequence, abnormal voltages caused by voltage variation, the line-to-line fault, the two line-to-ground fault have a little effect on total leakage current of ZnO arrester. But abnormal voltages caused by the single line-to-ground fault have an important effect on total leakage current of ZnO arrester.
This paper describes the evaluation of long duration current impulse withstand characteristics of ZnO blocks for high voltage surge arresters. Four ZnO varistors were manufactured with the general ceramic production method and three abroad varistors were also prepared to be compared. All varistors exhibited high density, which was in the range of $5.42{\sim}5.49g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties, the reference voltage of all samples was in the range of 5.11~5.72kV and the residual voltage was in the range of 8.314~9.305kV. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, sample 2 and 3 failed at the 2nd and 4th shot of series impulse currents, respectively, but the rest survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of the residual voltage of samples survived were below 1.7%, which were in the acceptance range of 5%.
DLTS measurements were performed to study the annealing induced changes of the trap centers in MOV and to shed more light on the stability mechanism of the MOV. Two electron traps, Ec-0.26[eV] and Ec-(O.2-0.3)[eV], were observed in the unannealed samples in large quantities(7-9 X 1014[CM 3]), whereas the three electron traps Ec-0.17 [eV], Ec-0.26[eV] and Ec-(O.2-0.3)[eV] were observed far less in the annealed samples. The minima in the Ec-0.26[eV] trap density, coupled with the presented results that unannealed devices are unstable whereas 600.deg. C annealed devices are most stable, suggests that the instability of the MOV under long term electrical stressing is related to the Ec-0.26[eV] trap. This results support that the ion migration model for the device instability where the Ec-0.26[eV] defects may be the interstitial zinc or the migrating ions. The interstitial zinc originated as a result of the nonstoichiometric nature of ZnO might cause the degradation of the I-V characteristics of the MOV with long term electrical stressing.
This paper presents the temperature characteristics with the structure of 18 kV surge arresters for distribution system. Three types of polymer arrester were fabricated and a ceramic arrester was also prepared to investigate. Below $100^{\circ}C$, three types of polymeric arresters exhibited almost the same leakage current value, but above $100^{\circ}C$, the polymeric arresters whose module was injected into polymeric housing with the grease exhibited the highest leakage current. In contrary, the arresters being manufactured by directly injecting silicone rubber onto arrester module exhibited the lowest leakage current. The rapid rising of leakage current of the polymeric arresters with the grease at $120^{\circ}C$ was because of the deterioration of the insulation characteristics of the grease between the FRP module and the silicone housing. All polymeric arresters exhibited the same surface temperature characteristics but the ceramic arresters was slower than the polymer arrester in heat emission despite the lowest leakage current. It was thought that the air layer between ZnO varistor blocks and the ceramic housing prevented the heat emission.
DC accelerated aging characteristics of Zn-Pr-Co-Cr-La oxides-based varistors were investigated with various sintering temperatures. The varistors sintered at $1240^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest nonlinearity, with a nonlinear exponent of 79.3 and a leakage current of $0.3\;{\mu}A$, whereas completely degraded because of thermal runaway owing to low sintered density. The varistors sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ exhibited not only a high nonlinearity with the nonlinear exponent 61.4 and the leakage current 0.7 ${\mu}A$, but also a high stability with the variation rates of varistor voltage and nonlinear exponent are -1.01% and -10.67%, respectively, under DC stress condition such as $(0.85\;V_{1mA}/115^{\circ}C/24\;h)+(0.90\;V_{1mA}/120^{\circ}C/24\;h)+(0.95\;V_{1mA}/125^{\circ}C/24\;h)+(0.95\;V_{1mA}/150^{\circ}C/24\;h)$.
