  • In the practical engineering fields, the horizontally curved beams are frequently erected as the major/minor structural components. The effects of both variable curvature and variable cross-section on structural behavior are very important and therefore these effects should be included in structural analyses. From this viewpoint, this paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams with variable curvature and variable cross-section. In this study, the parabola as the curvilinear shape and stepped beam as the variable cross-section are considered. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beams are derived. For calculating the natural frequencies, the governing equations are solved by numerical methods. The Runge-Kutta and Determinant search Methods are used for integrating the differential equations and for calculating the natural frequencies, respectively. With regard to numerical results, the relationships between frequency parameters and various beam parameters are presented in the forms of Table and Figures.

  • A quality inspection procedure interchangeably using the performance and surrogate variables is proposed. At the start of the inspection, the continuous performance variable is measured for all items. As soon as iconsecutive items are found to be conforming, the continuous surrogate variable is measured instead of the performance variable. If an item is rejected, the inspection based on the performance variable is resumed. It is assumed that the performance variable and the surrogate variable are jointly normally distributed with known means and standard deviations. The average outgoing quality (AOQ) expression is derived, and the methods of finding the inspection procedure with a specified average outgoing quality limit (AOQL) are presented.

  • A process monitoring procedure using a correlated variable is presented when a lower specification limit is given on the performance variable. Every item is inspected with a variable correlated with the performance variable. When an item is rejected in the screening inspection, the process is checked for change using the mean and variance of measurements of the correlated variable for n preceding items including the rejected one. The performance variable is assumed to be normally distributed. A linear relationship between the performance and surrogate variables is assumed with normally distributed error term. The monitoring procedure is designed so that the prespecified outgoing quality can be attained.

  • In this article, we suggest the following approaches to simultaneous variable selection and outlier detection. First, we determine possible candidates for outliers using properties of an intercept estimator in a difference-based regression model, and the information of outliers is reflected in the multiple regression model adding mean shift parameters. Second, we select the best model from the model including the outlier candidates as predictors using stochastic search variable selection. Finally, we evaluate our method using simulations and real data analysis to yield promising results. In addition, we need to develop our method to make robust estimates. We will also to the nonparametric regression model for simultaneous outlier detection and variable selection.

  • In this study, a variable elasticity spring was applied to improve the pressure control precision of conventional relief valves. The equilibrium equation of the forces acting on the valve poppet was derived; it is demonstrated that matching the elastic rate of the pressure-adjusting coil spring to the equivalent elastic rate of the flow force improved the pressure override. The procedures that were used to design the variable elasticity spring are presented, and some applications of the variable elasticity spring are also introduced. Computer simulations were used to analyze three cases: a poppet-closed flow force structure, a poppet-open flow force structure with a constant elasticity spring, and a structure containing a variable elasticity spring. It is confirmed that the pressure control precision of the relief valve can be significantly improved upon by applying a variable elasticity spring to the poppet-open flow force structure.

  • The anisotropic-diffusion convection equation with exponentially variable coefficients is discussed in this paper. Numerical solutions are found using a combined Laplace transform and boundary element method. The variable coefficients equation is usually used to model problems of functionally graded media. First the variable coefficients equation is transformed to a constant coefficients equation. The constant coefficients equation is then Laplace-transformed so that the time variable vanishes. The Laplace-transformed equation is consequently written as a boundary integral equation which involves a time-free fundamental solution. The boundary integral equation is therefore employed to find numerical solutions using a standard boundary element method. Finally the results obtained are inversely transformed numerically using the Stehfest formula to get solutions in the time variable. The combined Laplace transform and boundary element method are easy to implement and accurate for solving unsteady problems of anisotropic exponentially graded media governed by the diffusion convection equation.

  • We present new recurrence formulas for the raw and central moments of a compound binomial random variable. Our approach involves relating two compound binomial random variables that have parameters with a difference of 1 for the number of trials, but which have the same parameters for the success probability for each trial. As a consequence of our recursions, the raw and central moments of a binomial random variable are obtained in a recursive manner without the use of Stirling numbers.

  • Generally, most of researches that need a variable-clustering process use an exploratory factor analysis technique or a divisive hierarchical variable-clustering method based on a correlation matrix. And some researchers apply a object-clustering method to a distance matrix transformed from a correlation matrix, though this approach is known to be improper. On this paper an agglomerative hierarchical variable-clustering method based on a correlation matrix itself is suggested. It is derived from a geometric concept by using variate-spaces and a characterizing variate.

  • Continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanisms considered here is a V-belt drive with two variable-diameter pulleys and effective diameters. One pulley was set by a mechanical link while the other was spring-loaded to provide automatic correspondence. The center distance between the two variable-diameter pulleys was fixed. Experimental studies were executed to analyze efficiencies as change of its speed ratio.

  • Association rule mining searches for interesting relationships among items in a given database. Association rules are frequently used by retail stores to assist in marketing, advertising, floor placement, and inventory control. There are three primary quality measures for association rule, support and confidence and lift. In this paper we present association rule mining based antecedent variables. We call these rules to antecedent association rules. An antecedent variable is a variable that occurs before the independent variable and the dependent variable.
