Teachers' Values about Teaching Mathematics in Classrooms, Implementing Lesson Study and Open Approach: a Thai Experience

  • The aim of this study was to explore teachers' values about teaching mathematics in the classrooms which implemented Lesson Study and Open Approach as a teaching approach. The targeted group was 83 school teachers from 4 schools participating in a teacher professional development project. The data was gathered through teacher questionnaires, lesson observations and interviews. Data analysis is based on Bishop's (1988; 2003; 2007) and Komin's (1990) frameworks. The results from the implementation of Lesson Study and Open Approach in Thai classroom found the different of the roles and behaviors of teachers and students in classroom. The results revealed 3 kinds of values about teaching: Mathematical values, General educational values, Mathematics educational values and also found that most of the teachers valued problem solving as an innovative teaching approach as against traditional approaches they were familiar with.

Maternal Traditional-Modern Values, Childrearing Practices and Children's Social Behaviors (어머니의 전통-근대 가치관과 양육행동 및 아동의 사회적 행동)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between maternal traditional-modern values, childrearing practices and children's social behaviors. The subjects were 500 fifth grade elementary school children and their mothers, and teachers, and peers in the same classroom. The data were collected through questionnaires on maternal traditional values, perceived maternal childrearing practices, and children's social behaviors. Traditional maternal values focused on familial collectivism and politeness. The major results were as follows: (1) Maternal traditional values were positively related to childrearing practices in both maternal affection rational guidance and authoritarian control. (2) Maternal traditional values did not directly influence children's social behavior but showed an indirect moderating effect through maternal childrearing practices. Implications were discussed in terms of the importance of traditional values on childrearing behavior as well as the development of children.

University Student Characteristics of Type of Job Values and Key Competency

  • This study is aimed to determine types of job values which is searched by 242 university student in Gwangju, to study characteristics of each type, and to analyze key competency of each type. The data were analyed with PASW 18.0 using frequency analysis, k-mean cluster analysis, crosstabs and one-way ANOVA. According to findings, first of all, university student types of job values are divided into 4 groups; a type of intrinsic job values(27.7%), a type of active job value(32.2%), a type of external job value(12.4%), a type of passive job value(27.7%). Secondly, the type of job values showed statistically significant difference only in the monthly allowance of socio-economic variables. Thirdly, the type of job values showed statistically significant difference 'communication', 'mathematics', 'problem solving', 'self development', 'resource management', 'interpersonal skills', 'technical ability', 'understanding organizations' and 'work ethics'.

  • This study explicitly identifies the main values that rural welfare recipients reveal when they talk about their experiences with welfare and welfare reform. An inductive analysis of values is conducted using interview data from 49 current and former recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) residing in the states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, and New York. Seven main values that emerge from the data are self-esteem, autonomy, uniqueness, advancement, security, independence, and fairness.   • The purpose of this study was to find out the clothing values and meanings by material values. The researcher used the scales of Richins & Dawson (1992) for Materialism Scale. The scales of Prentice (1987) and Ricllins (1994a, 1994b) for privateand public meanings of clothing. The scales of Prentice (1987) and Richins (1994a, 1994b) for importance clothes of private and public meanings.. The scales of Creekmore (1968) for clothing values. The subjects of this study were 154 girl students in the university. The research materials was analyzed by Frequency, MANOVA and Scheffe test The results of this study were as follows; 1) Higher group of material values had an orientation that emphasizes enjoyment values of clothing in private moaning and seems expensive of clothing in public meaning. 2) All group set a high value on both suits and jeans in clothing of private meanie that meant both interpersonal and enjoyment values and put much worth on both suits and mustang that concerned both costly and brand. 3) Higher group had significantly difference in aesthetic value and political value, and lower had significantly differene ineconomic value and theoretical value.

Proposing a simple procedure for predicting the acoustical conditions in occupied classrooms from the measured unoccupied values (공석 시 측정값을 활용한 만석 시 강의실의 음향상태 예측법)

  • This work proposes a simple method to use the added absorption per person values to predict the expected values of the acoustical conditions in occupied classrooms. This method is based on the effects of the values of added absorption per person on the unoccupied total absorption values of the classrooms and on other room acoustical parameters. The total sound absorption in an unoccupied classroom can be calculated from measured reverberation times in the classroom. The expected occupied absorption can be calculated using equation which was obtained in a previous study (Choi, 2017) by fitting a linear regression line to a plot of total occupied absorption versus the corresponding unoccupied total absorption values measured in 12 university classrooms. The ratios of occupied-to-unoccupied sound absorption are used to predict increments in the values of acoustical parameters that result when occupants are added to the rooms.

  • This paper attempts to explore the need and importance of values integration in educational activities to mitigate learning crisis and promote sustainable learning achievement. The traditional approach, commercial motive, focus on instrumental knowledge coupled with many other contemporary issues have collectively smothered the fundamental humanistic principles of education. To avert the situation and execute the core objectives, we need to shift our focus: a shift from instrumental knowledge to humanistic-transformational knowledge; a shift from the traditional approach of supplying and storing information to learning to deal with the real-world problems; a shift from head to heart. Values integration is an attempt to initiate and promote this shift. Rather than teaching values and moral principles under a particular subject heading, values need to be a part of everyday in-school and out-school activities. To concretize this concept, a model is proposed in this study as a holistic model of values integration via whole school ambiances and community support.

  • school. This study was carried out by literature review. Values of woodworking in extrinsic viewpoint were justified as well-balanced development between left brain and right brain, effective improvement of creative problem solving skill, formation of affirmative attitude toward woodworking, and obtaining method to use tools and equipment effectively. Values of woodworking in intrinsic viewpoint were justified as students' instinct liking of woodworking, psychological stability, and implanting self-confidence in students. In addition to these, woodworking has more educational values. Such values should be justified in the following studies.

  • When we analyze incomplete data, i.e., data with missing values, we need treatment for the missing values. A common way to deal with this problem is to delete the cases with missing values. Various other methods have been developed. Among them are EM algorithm and regression algorithm which can estimate missing values and impute the missing elements with the estimated values. In this paper, we introduce multiple imputation software SOLAS which generates multiple data sets and imputes with them.
