  • In order to investigate the electrical properties of transformer oils for large power, the characteristics of AC and Impulse breakdown in gap length of 1.0~2.5mm and that of volume resistivity were researched in temperature range of 20~$100^{\circ}C$. An geometrical capacitance of electrode with coaxial cylindrical shape for measuring the volume resistivity was 16pF, and highmegohm meter with model no. VMG-1000 was used, and also the applied voltage were DC 100, 250 and 500V. In the dependance of breakdown characteristics due to electrode gap length, it was confirmed that breakdown voltage was nearly uniform by volume effect according to the increase of gap. In the characteristics for AC breakdown, the dielectric strength was increased to $90^{\circ}C$ but decreased over $90^{\circ}C$, and also in case of impulse breakdown, it was increased to 7$0^{\circ}C$ and at dated $70^{\circ}C$ over in temperature range. The calculated mobility of oils in the characteristics for impulse breakdown were about $10^{-5}$~$10^{-4}cm^2/V{\cdot}S$, and the value of volume resistivity was almost invariable in low temperature range, regardless of voltage by the stable thermal properties, and it indicated a peak at $50^{\circ}C$ and had a sudden change to decrease over that temperature, and also the value of volume resistivity in 250V/mm at $80^{\circ}C$ is suitable for the International electrical standards, it was confirmed.

  • Measurement of low cell gap and retardation by using a rotating polarizer method was proposed. For more precise calculation and measurement, we applied a simple numerical calculation and a retardation film that has large retardation value of 1 ~m to measurement system. From experiments, we proved that cell gap and retardation could be measured even though the values of those are so small. small.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient pixel value prediction algorithm that can accurately predict pixel value using neighboring pixel values scanned in reverse s-order in the image. Generally, image has similarity with similar values between adjacent pixel values, and may have directional edge characteristics. In this paper, we proposed a method to improve pixel value prediction accuracy by improving GAP(Gradient Adjacent Pixel) algorithm for predicting pixel value by using similarity between adjacent pixels and edge characteristics. The proposed method increases the accuracy of the predicted pixel value by precisely predicting the pixel value using the positional weights of the neighboring pixels. Experiments on real images confirmed the superiority of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is useful for applications such as reversible data hiding, reversible watermarking, and data compression applications.

  • The turbine performance test of an axial-type turbine is carried out with various axial gap distances between the stator and rotor. The turbine is operated at the low pressure and speed, and the degree of reaction is 0.373 at the mean radius. The axial-type turbine consists of ons-stage and 3-dimensional blades. The chord length of rotor is 28.2mm and mean diameter of turbine is 257.56mm. The power of turbo-blower for input power is 30kW and mass flow rate is $340m^3/min\;at\;290mmAq$ static-pressure. The RPM and output power are controlled by a dynamometer connected directly to the turbine shaft. The axial gap distances are changed from a quarter to two times of stator axial chord length, and performance curves are obtained with 7 different axial gaps. The efficiency is dropped about $5{\%}$ of its highest value due to the variation of axial gap on the same non-dimensional mass flow rate and RPM, and experimental results show that the optimum axial gap is 1.0-1.5Cx.

  • Control of drag force on a circular cylinder using multiple detached splitter plates is numerically studied for laminar flow Two splitter plates with the same length as the cylinder diameter (d) are placed horizontally in the upstream of the cylinder and in the near-wake region, respectively. Their positions are described by the gap ratios (G$_1$/d, G$_2$/d), where G$_1$ represents the gap between the cylinder stagnation point and the rear edge of the upstream splitter plate, and G$_2$ represents the gap between the cylinder base point and the leading edge of the rear splitter plate. The drag varies with the two gap ratios; it has the minimum value at a certain set of gap ratios for each Reynolds number The upstream splitter plate decreases the stagnation pressure, while the rear splitter plate increases the base pressure by suppressing vortex shedding. This combined effect causes a significant drag reduction on the cylinder Particularly, the drag sharply increases past an optimum G$_2$/d; this seems to be related to a sudden change in bubble size in the wake region.

  • Control of drag farce on a circular cylinder using a detached splitter plate is numerically studied for laminar flow. A splitter plate with the same length as the cylinder diameter(d) is placed horizontally in the wake region. Its position is described by the gap ratio(G/d), where G represents the gap between the cylinder base point and the leading edge of the plate. The drag varies with the gap ratio; it has the minimum value at a certain gap ratio for each Reynolds number. The drag sharply increases past the optimum gap ratio; this seems to be related to the sudden change in bubble size in the wake region. This trend is consistent with the experimental observation currently available in case of turbulent flow. It is also found that the net drag coefficient significantly depends on the variation of base suction coefficient.

  • The design parameter of the heat loss for the pressurized water reactor has been studied. The heat loss from the reactor vessel through the air gap. insulation are analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. Parametric study has been performed on the air gap width between the reactor vessel wall and the inner surface of the insulation, and on the insulation thickness. Also evaluated is the performance degradation due to the chimney effect due to gaps left between the panels during the installation of the insulation system. From the analysis results, the optimal with of air gap and insulation thickness and the value of heat loss are obtained The results show how the heat loss varies with the air gap width and insulation thickness. The temperature and the velocity distributions are also presented. From the results of the evaluation. the optimal air gap width and the optimal insulation thickness are obtained. As the difference between the predicted heat loss and measured heat loss from the reactor vessel is construed Primarily as losses due to chimney effect. the contribution of the chimney effect to the total heat loss is quantitatively indicated.

  • This paper investigates optimum air-gap flux distribution with third harmonic rotor flux orientation adjustment for five-phase induction motor. The technique of objective is to generate a nearly rectangular air-gap flux, and it improves iron utilization under variation loading conditions. The proportional relations between third harmonic and fundamental plane currents is usually adopted in the conventional method. However, misalignment between fundamental and third harmonic component occurs with variation loading. The iron of stator teeth is saturated due to this misalignment. This problem is solved by third harmonic rotor flux orientation adjustment simultaneously, and direction and amplitude are changed with mechanical load variation. The proposed method ensures that the air-gap flux density is near rectangular for a maximum value from no load to rated load. It is confirmed that the proposed method guarantees complete both planes decoupling with third harmonic flux orientation adjustment. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated experimentally.

  • An experimental study is presented for the characteristics of the high temperature superconductor as an application of the repulsive type magnetic bearing. A ring shaped YBCO type superconductor and Neodium permanent magnets are employed for the experiment. For the case of field cooling, superconductor shows strong repulsive force, which is due to the Meissner effect, as the gap between the superconductor and the magnet gets closer. The repulsive force variation with respect to the gap change shows hysterisis characteristics. The area of the loop of the hysterisis curve represents the dissipation of energy, which reveals that the magnetic bearing with superconductor has large damping. The effect of the initial gap and the magnetic flux density on the repulsive force is analyzed experimentally and the static stiffness variation is calculated from the measured repulsive force variation. The relative sliding velocity between the superconductor and the magnet has little effect on the repulsive force which is quite different from the usual sliding element bearing. As the initial gap for the field cooling becomes larger, the maximum repulsive force at the minimum gap increases and approaches to the value for the case of zero field cooling.

  • To ensure adequate protection from the risk of burns, fire fighter's turnout has a composite of more than three components and air gaps between layers of materials. During the flame exposure, radiation and convection heat transfer occurs in the air gap, thus the air gap acts as a thermal resistance with non-linear characteristics. Therefore, in this study, the experiments were performed to identify the effect of various air gap width (0~7 mm) on the thermal protective performance of fire fighter's clothing. The temperatures on each layer and RPP (Radiant Protective Performance, the most effective index representing the thermal protective performance) were measured with various incident radiant heat fluxes. The temperature at the rear surface of the garment decreased and RPP increased with increasing air gap width because the thermal resistance increased. Especially, it could be found that RPP value and air gap width has almost linear relation for the constant incident heat flux conditions. Thus relatively simple RPP predictive equation was suggested for various incident heat flux and air gap conditions.
