  • The GIUH (Geomorphologic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph) is to be applied to the ungauged or insufficiently gauged basins. For tIris purpose, an accurate estimation of the charactenstlc velocity is one very important part, but any proper method for this has not been developed yet. In case that we have enough rainfall and runoff clata, the estimation of the characteristic velocity may be an easy job, but it is out of the purpose of the GIUH. Remindmg that the purpose of GIUH the characterisbc veloclty should be estimated based on the geomorpholog1c analysis and also be snnple for easy apphcation. In tIris research analysis cmd application of the GruH was given to several sub-basins in Wi-stream river basin, Gono, Donggok and Hyoryung. After deriving the characteristic velocity througn a optimizatlOn process with real data, it is compared w1th several velOCIties der1ved from geOlnoI1Jhoclimatic instantaneous unit hydrograph theory and several other concentration time formulae. The estimated charactenstic velocities using Kerby, Kim, KInematic Wave, and Brasby- Williams formulae found to g1ve the appropriate results. Hmvever, as the Kerby, and the Kinematic Wave require user's decision of the IvIanning's n value, the K1m and the Braby-Williams seem to be more applicable and recommended as characteristic velocity formula.

  • This paper presents a novel finite element (FE) model for analyzing coupled flutter of long-span bridges using the commercial FE package ANSYS. This model utilizes a specific user-defined element Matrix27 in ANSYS to model the aeroelastic forces acting on the bridge, wherein the stiffness and damping matrices are expressed in terms of the reduced wind velocity and flutter derivatives. Making use of this FE model, damped complex eigenvalue analysis is carried out to determine the complex eigenvalues, of which the real part is the logarithm decay rate and the imaginary part is the damped vibration frequency. The condition for onset of flutter instability becomes that, at a certain wind velocity, the structural system incorporating fictitious Matrix27 elements has a complex eigenvalue with zero or near-zero real part, with the imaginary part of this eigenvalue being the flutter frequency. Case studies are provided to validate the developed procedure as well as to demonstrate the flutter analysis of cable-supported bridges using ANSYS. The proposed method enables the bridge designers and engineering practitioners to analyze flutter instability by using the commercial FE package ANSYS.

  • In this paper, a computer simulationtechnique for the forging process having a spring-attached die was presented . The penalty rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method was empolyed together with an interatively force-balancing method, in which the convergence was achieved when the forming load and the spring reaction force are in equilibrium within the user-specified allowable accuracy. The force balance was controled by adjusting the velocity of the spring-attched die. th minimize the number of internations, a velocity estimating schemewas proposed. Two application examples found in the related company were given. In the first application example, the predicted metal folw lines were compared with the acturally forged ones. in the second example, a hot forging process with a spring-attached die was simulated and the analyzed results were discussed in order to investigated the effects of spring-attached dies on the metal flow lines and the forming loads.

  • This paper presents the design of the power-assisted controller for the in-wheel type smart wheelchair by using torque estimation that is predicted by relationship between input voltage and output wheel angular velocity. Nowadays, interest of the moving assistant aids is increased according to the increase in population of the elderly and the handicapped person. However some of the moving assistant aids have problems. For example, manual wheelchair has difficulty moving at the slope, because users lack the muscular strength of their arm. In electric wheelchair case, users should be weak by being decreased muscles of upper body. To overcome these problems, power-assisted electric wheelchair are proposed. Most of the power-assisted electric wheelchair have the special rims that can measure the user's power. In here, the rims have to be designed to install the sensors to measure user's power. In this paper, we don't design the rim to measure the man power. To predict the man power, we propose a control algorithm of the in-wheeled electric wheelchair by using torque estimation from the wheel. First, we measure the wheel velocity and voltage at the in-wheel electric wheelchair. And then we extract driving will forces by using proposed mathematical model. Also they are applied at the controller as the control input, we verify to be able to control in-wheel type smart wheelchair by using simulation.

  • In this paper, we suggest new music composition algorithm based on fractal theory. User can define and control fractal shape by setting an initial state and production rules in L-System. We generate an asymmetric fractal tree based on L-System and probability. Then a music is generated by the fractal tree image using sonification techniques. We introduce two composition algorithm using the fractal tree. First, monophonic music can be generated by mapping x and y axis to velocity and pitch, respectively Second, harmonic music also can be generated by mapping x and y axis to time and pitch, respectively Using our composition algorithm, user can easily generate a music which has repeated pattern created by recursive feature of fractal, and a music which has structure similar to fractal tree image.

  • In general, gestures can be utilized in human-computer interaction area. Even though the acceleration information is most widely used for the detection of user’s intention, it is hard to use the information under the condition of zero or small variations of gesture velocity due to the inherent characteristics of the accelerometer. In this paper, a natural interaction method which does not require excessive gesture acceleration will be described. Taking advantages of the gravity, the system can generate various types of signals. Also, many problems such as initialization and draft error can be solved using restorative uprighting force of the system.

  • This paper presents an efficient method to provide seamless communication in mobile wireless networks. The goal of seamless communication is to provide disruption free service to a mobile user. A disruption in service could occur due to active handoffs. There are many user applications that do not require a total guarantee for disruption free service but would also not tolerate very frequent disruptions. This paper proposes an extended staggered multicast that provides a probabilistic guarantee for disruption free service. The proposed multicast forecasts the direction and velocity for a mobile host. It is possible that data packets for a mobile host are multicasted to not all neighbor cells but a par\ulcorner of neighbor cells those the mobile host will be handoff potentially on the basis of these information. Therefore, the extended staggered multicast significantly reduces the static network bandwidth usage also provides a probabilistic guarantee for disruption free service.

  • Most mobile devices provide limited input interfaces in order to maximize the mobility and the portability. In this paper, the author proposes a small cubic-shaped tangible input interface which tracks the location, the direction, and the velocity using MEMS sensor technology to overcome the physical limitations of the poor input devices in mobile computing environments. As the preliminary phase for implementing the proposed tangible input interface, the prototype design and implementation methods are described in this paper. Various experiments such as menu manipulation, 3-dimensional contents control, and sensor data visualization have been performed in order to verify the validity of the proposed interface. The proposed tangible device enables direct and intuitive manipulation. It is obvious that the mobile computing will be more widespread and various kinds of new contents will emerge in near future. The proposed interface can be successfully employed for the new contents services that cannot be easily implemented because of the limitation of current input devices. It is also obvious that this kind of interface will be a critical component for future mobile communication environments. The proposed tangible interface will be further improved to be applied to various contents manipulation including 2D/3D games.

  • A prototype radar display unit was implemented using inexpensive off-the-shelf components, including a nonlinear estimation algorithm for the target tracking in a clutter environment. Two custom designed boards; an analog signal processing board and a DSP board, can be plugged into an expansion slot of a personal computer (PC) to form a maritime radar display unit. Our system provided all the functionality specified in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolution A422(XI). The analog signal processing board was used for A/D conversion as well as rain and sea clutter suppression. The main functions of the DSP board were scan conversion and video overlay operations. A host PC was used to run the tracking algorithm of targets in clutter, using the discrete-time Bayes optimal (nonlinear, and non-Gaussian) estimation method, and the graphic user interface (GUI) software for Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA). The proposed tracking method recursively found the entire probability density function of the target position and velocity by converting into linear convolution operations.
