Dietary counseling is undoubtedly important for prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Several dietary counseling methods have been developed and used in Japan to promote healthier diets. However, in Japan, few studies have established effective counseling methods. We developed a computer-assisted tailored dietary counseling system with self-administered diet history questionnaire (DHQ) to assess nutrient intakes and the feedbacks for counseling. We examined the effectiveness of the system in three studies , two among mildly-hypercholesterolemic and one among healthy subjects. We observed significant changes in intakes of targeted nutrients in all three studies. We also observed favorable changes in the corresponding serum and urinary biomarkers in two studies, i.e., non-significant change in serum cholesterol, serum carotene and vitamin C, and a significant change in 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium. In addition, one of the studies observed a significant modified dietary habit for one-year after the intervention was completed. No unfavorable change was observed for non-targeted nutrients in all three studies. The dietary counseling system with DHQ was concluded to be effective among motivated high-risk and healthy subjects. The system's application to other diseases and populations such as children, adolescents, and elderly, should be examined further. (J Community Nutrition 5(2) : 112-119, 2003)
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of calcium levels(50, 100 and 200% of requirement) on metabolism of Ca, Na and K in Young and adult female rats for 3 weeks. There was no significant difference in feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio among the groups of different Ca intake level. Serum Na level of high-Ca group was significantly lower than that of low-Ca or normal-Ca group in Young rats. There was no significant difference in liver Ca and K contents among the groups of different Ca intake levels. But, Na content in liver was decreased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. Ca content in kidney of high-Ca group in young rats and normal-Ca group in adult rats were significantly higher than those of other groups. Na content in kidney of low-Ca group was lower than those of normal-Ca and high-Ca groups. Urinary excretions of Na and K and fecal excretion of Ca were increased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. But, fecal excretions of Na and K were not affected by dietary Ca intake. According to this study, it was found that the high Ca consumption promotes excretions of fecal Ca and urinary Na and K in rats. The study verifies the need for more study on the interrelationship among Ca, Na and K metabolism and bood pressure.
In order to determine the effect of Oryeongsan reputed to have diuretic action since Han Dynasty and possible synergetic action of Dianthi Semen, Polygonum avicularis Herba, Kochiae Fructus and Akebiae Lignum, herbs with similar reputation, when added to the above prescription, their decoction powders were solved into distilled water and injected into rabbits through the ear vein. Upon the treatment, the excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride ion together with urine volume was kinetically determined. At the same time the clearance of plasma creatinine and sodium ion was determined and the following results were obtained. Every experimental group demonstrated diuretic action, though feable, of relatively long duration. The diuretic mechanism in the case of Oryeongsan made up by mixing the seperate extracts of individual components and Oryeongsan(A) plus Dianthi Semen was found to be inhibitory effect of renal tubular reabsorption in contrast to the case of Oryeongsan(A) plus Polygonum avicularis Herba, Kochiae Fructus or Akebiae Lignum in which case the diuretic mechanism was found to be glomerular vascular dilatation. The urinary excretion of potassium ion was increased in the case of Oryeongsan(A) plus Dianthi Semen, Kochiae Fructus of Akebiae Lignum whereas in the other cases no similar change was registered. The diuretic action was most remarkable in the case of Oryeongsan(A) plus Polygonum avicularis Herba followed by Oryeongsan(A) plus Kochiae Fructus, Oryeongsan(A) plus Dianthi Semen, extract mixture of individual component of Oryeongsan, Oryeongsan(A) and Oryeongsan(A) plus Akebiae Lignum decreasing order. The duration of diuretic action was found to be 90 minutes in the case of Oryeongsan and mixture of individual component of Oryeongsan, and 60 minutes in the case of Oryeongsan(A) plus Dianthi Semen, Kochiae Fructus or Akebiae Lignum in contrast to the case of Oryeongsan(A) plus Polygonum avicularis Herba which lasted up to 120 minutes.
Intravenously administered total water extract of Hoelen, (Pachymae fungus) in a dose of 10mg/kg and its methanol lextract, in a smaller dose than total water extract, produced significantly increase on urinary volume, sodium nad potassium excretion, and osmolar nad free water clearances. Increasing the doses produced more pronounced renal responses. Glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow changed littl with both extract. On the contrary, water extract from residue obtained on extraction with organic solvents exhibited no significant changes on the parameters of the renal function. In experiments, in which the total water extract was infused directly into a renal artery and urines from both ureters were collected separetely, a small dose of 0.3mg/kg/min showed no diuresis, but a large dose of 1.0mg/kg/min elicited diuretic action even on the contralateral kindneys. It is, therfore, concluded that Hoelen induces diuresis, mainly by inhibiting reabsorption of electrolytes in the renal tubules, and that the renotropic action may be mediated by some endogenous humoral substances.
It is well known that the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) has a prepro-hormone of 151 amino-acids which loses their hydrophobic signal peptide to form 126 amino acid prohormone. The whole prohormone is released and then cleaved by proteases into more than one circulating forms. Recently, Winters et al. (1988a, b) reported that high concentrations of N-terminal fragments of prepro-ANP $(26{\sim}55),\;(56{\sim}92)\;and\;(104{\sim}123)$ were detected in human plasma. However, their physiological roles have not been established. The present study was conducted to determine whether the N-terminal fragments of pro-ANP have any effect on the renal function and to compare the effect with those of G-terminal fragments of pro-ANP The results indicate that intrarenal arterial infusions of prepro-ANP $(26{\sim}41),\;(26{\sim}55),\;(56{\sim}92)\;and\;(104{\sim}123)$ induced no significant changes in renal function. Whereas ${\alpha}-human$ ANP $(prepro-ANP,\;124{\sim}151)$ and pro-ANP caused a significant increase in urine volume, renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate, urinary excretions of sodium, chloride and potassium, and fractional excretion of sodium. These results suggest that the N-terminal fragments of pro-ANP are ineffective, while the C-terminal fragments retain the natriuretic and diuretic activities.
The dopaminergic receptors were consisted of two distinct subtypes, $D_1$and $D_2$, each having different function. The present study was attempted to investigate the effects of R(-)-2,10,11-trihydroxy-N-n-propylnoraporphine (TNPA), a dopamine $D_2$receptor agonist, on renal function in dog. TNPA (5.0~15.0 $\mu$g/kg), when given into the vein, produced a dose-dependently antidiuresis along with the decrease in osmolar clearance ( $C_{osm}$) and urinary excretion of sodium and potassium ( $E_{Na}$ , and $E_{K}$). It also increased reabsorption rates of sodium and potassium in renal tubules ( $R_{Na}$ , $R_{K}$) without any changes in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal plasma flow (RPF) and free water clearance ( $C_{H2o}$). TNPA (0.5~1.5 $\mu$g/kg/min) infused into a renal artery decreased urine flow both in the experimental and the control kidneys. TNPA (1.5~5.0 $\mu$g/kg) administered via the carotid artery also greatly exhibited antidiuresis even at intravenously ineffective doses. Changes of renal function by TNPA given into both the renal artery and the carotid artery were almost the same aspect to those induced by intravenous TNPA. These results obtained from the present study suggest that TNPA produces antidiuresis by increasing the reabsorption rates of electrolytes in renal tubules, mainly distal tubule, through changing of central function.unction.

Purpose of this study was to investigate correlation between blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and dietary sodium, potassium intake pattern in the family members of normal cerebrovascular (CVA) disease, excluding patients themselves. Both mean values of systolic (125.8$\pm$23.7 vs 119.3$\pm$19.2mmHg) and diastolic(76.1$\pm$16.7 vs 71.6$\pm$12.5mmHg) bllood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients were significantly higher than those of normal subjects. Systolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, weibght, sodium in soybean paste, potassium in hotpepepr paste, soybean paste and meats in normal subjects group. In the family members of cerebrovascular patient, systolic blood pressure was possively correlated with age, weight, sodium in soy sauce, drinking water and potassium in soups. Interestingly, table salt intake was positively correlated with systosolic blood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients. Diastolic bolld pressure was positively correlated with age, weight, table salt intake potassium in hotpepper paste and soybean paste in normal subjects group. Diastolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, weight and table salt intake in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients. Urinary potassium excretion was negatively correlated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Sodium intake is positively associated with blood pressure, which may increase the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, we assessed the disease burden of CVD attributable to sodium intakes above 2,000 mg/day and prospectively investigated the association between dietary/urinary sodium levels and the risk of all-cause and CVD-mortality using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 68,578 and 33,113 participants were included for comparative risk assessment (CRA) analysis and mortality analysis, respectively, and mean follow-up time for mortality was 5.4 years. CRA analysis was used to quantify attributable incidences of stroke, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and deaths attributable to sodium intake between 1998 and 2016. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to determine the association between sodium intake and all-cause and CVD-mortality. RESULTS: Mean dietary sodium intake decreased over time, reaching 3,647 mg/day in 2016. Similarly, the population attributable fractions of stroke and IHD, and the number of CVD-associated deaths attributable to high sodium intake/excretion also decreased. In terms of association with mortality, when participants were grouped into quartiles (Q) by energy-adjusted sodium intake, those in Q2 had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than those in Q1 with lower intakes. The risk of CVD-associated mortality was higher only in females with high sodium intake in Q4 than those in Q1. CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide data indicates that, in line with previous studies of multiple cohorts, both low and high sodium intakes may be associated with an increased risk of mortality; therefore, the optimal sodium intake for Koreans needs to be revised.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ambient hexavalent chromium concentration and the concentration of the chromium in whole blood, plasma, erythrocytes, and its urinary excretion of male rats after inhalation exposure of sodium chromate during 1, 2, and 3 weeks. 1. Differences of mean chromium concentration in urine, whole blood, erythrocytes, and plasma of male rats exposed to sodium chromate by exposure level were statistically significance, respectively. 2. At low and high exposure groups, differences of mean chromium concentration in urine, whole blood, erythrocytes, and plasma of male rats by duration of inhalation exposure were statistically significance, respectively. 3. Ratio of whole blood chromium to plasma chromium increased with the increased duration of inhalation exposure of sodium chromate. 4. Ambient hexavalent chromium was positively and strongly correlated with in erythrocyte chromium, and also erythrocyte chromium was strongly correlated with in whole blood chromium. In conclusion, this study showed that chromium in erythrocyte increased with the increased exposure level and exposure duration, therefore this study suggests that chromium in erythrocytes is a good biological exposure index of the internal dose from exposure to soluble hexavalent chromium compound.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) and cooling with misters and fans on renal function in relation to regulation of body fluids in different stages of lactation in crossbred Holstein cattle. Ten, 87.5% crossbred Holstein cattle were divided into two groups of 5 animals each, housing in a normal shaded barn (NS) and in a shaded barn with a mister-fans cooling system (MF). The experiment in each group was divided into 3 phases, early- (Day 75 postpartum), mid- (Day 135 postpartum), and late stage of lactation (Day 195 postpartum). The pre-treatment study was conducted on the starting day of each stage of lactation and the treatment study was performed after the end of the pre-treatment, during which the animal was injected with 500 mg of rbST (POSILAC) every 14 days for three times. During the study, ambient temperature at the hottest period daily in the MF barn was significantly lower, while relative humidity was higher than that of the NS barn. The temperature humidity index (THI) in both barns ranged from 79-85 throughout the periods of study. Cows in the MF barn showed a lower rectal temperature and respiration rate as compared with cows in the NS barn. The effect of rbST administration increased both rectal temperature and respiration rates of cows housed in either the NS or MF barn. Milk yield significantly increased in cows treated with rbST in all stages of lactation. Increases in mammary blood flow, accompanied by increases of total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid (ECF), blood volume (BV) and plasma volume (PV), were observed in both groups of cows receiving rbST in all stages of lactation. No alterations of renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate were observed in cows receiving rbST, but decreases in urinary excretion and fractional excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride ions appeared to correlate with reduction in the rate of urine flow and osmolar clearance during rbST administration. These results suggest that the effect of rbST supplementation to cows housed either in NS or MF barns on body fluid volume expansion is attributable to changes in the rate of electrolyte excretion by the kidney. The increased availability of renal tubular reabsorption of sodium, potassium and chloride ions during rbST treatment was a major factor in retaining body water through its colligative properties in exerting formation of an osmotic force mechanism.
