The use of roadheaders has been increasing to mitigate the problems of noise and vibration during tunneling operations in urban area. Since lack of experience of roadheader for hard rock, the selection of appropriate machines and the evaluation of cutting rates have been challenging. Currently, empirical models developed overseas are commonly used to evaluate cutting rates, but their effectiveness has not been verified for domestic rocks. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to assess the rock cutting force, cutterhead capacity, and cutting rate to select the appropriate machine and evaluate its performance. The cutterhead capacity was reviewed based on the literature results for the site. Furthermore, a new empirical model and simplified method for predicting cutting rates were proposed through data analysis in relation to operation time and rock strength, and compared with those of the conventional model from the manufacturer. The results show good agreement for high strength range upper 80 MPa of uniaxial compressive strength.

The estimation of surface settlement, ground behavior and tunnel displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel design with shallow depth and unconsolidated soil. On deformation analysis of shallow tunnel, it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigated the effects of key design parameter affecting deformation behavior by numerical analysis using nonlinear model incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters with the increment of the maximum shear strain after the initiation of plastic yielding. Numerical parametric studies are carried out to consider the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters, horizontal stress ratio, cohesion and shotcrete thickness.

In urban areas, blast excavation adjacent to tunnels is carried out frequently. It is generally required to secure static and dynamic stability of nearby tunnel structures for any such activities. Although there is some national guidelines for static safety, there is little guides to risk zoning controling the dynamic behavior of the underground structures. In this study, impacts on the blast-induced vibration are investigated using numerical study. An attempt to define the restricted area of blast adjacent to subway tunnels was also made. Particular concerns were given to tunnel depth and ground types. By carrying out the parametric study on depth and ground patterns, the envelope of blast distance of which dynamic response on the lining is controlled under 1 cm/sec, is established. It is shown that the increase in depth has increased the required safety distance slightly until the distance of 3.5 times of the tunnel diameter. Despite small changes in safety distance, it can be generally said that the effects of depth and stiffness of the ground is not significant in controlling the particle velocity of the tunnel linings.

Platform screen door (PSD) installed at underground subway station has reduced the safety accident, but it may cause poor air ventilation condition due to the isolated exhaust duct in the subway tunnel area. In this study, the additional ventilation system was suggested, which can be installed at a void space (i.e., storage room under stairs) of platform in order to improve efficiency of air ventilation rate. Exhausted air from platform was directed to underneath of platform and joined with existing ventilation duct of train exhaust system (TES). One subway station in Seoul city was selected to predict the effectiveness of the suggested lower exhaust system by using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The predicted mean age of air was decreased by 16.5% which proves the improvement of air ventilation efficiency when the suggested lower exhaust system was applied.

In current, there has not been the evaluation model for the optimum design of the multi-utility tunnel by considering urban type and size, the function of surrounding road and feasibility analyses with respect to construction method, and arrangement of accommodation facilities inside multi-utility tunnel. Thus, in this study, we developed the evaluation model for the optimum design of the multi-utility tunnel before and after the decision of the multi-utility tunnel installation. In this paper, we have selected the Deming cycle which is used in various fields among several decision methods for optimizing the design. For the purpose of reflecting the various factors in the design of the multi-utility tunnel, 11 higher indicators were set up to lead to more detailed approaches. In addition, based on the "Plan-Do-Check-Action (PDCA)" circulation method, we can realize the installation of the multi-utility tunnel and design more efficiently through the first phase for conception and the second phase for optimization, and develop the program for the evaluation model accordingly.

Domestic urban areas are experiencing serious traffic congestion problems due to continuous population growth and increased traffic volume. In order to solve the problem of traffic congestion, the study of great depth underground double deck tunnels using underground space is being actively carried out in the urban areas. The characteristics of great depth underground double deck tunnels are low in cross section, so the spread of fire smoke is expected to spread faster than the road tunnel in case of fire. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a fire smoke delay device which delays the spread of fire smoke when a fire occurs in a tunnels. In the previous study, the diffusion effect was analyzed according to the blocking area when the fire smoke spread delay device was operated through the 3D CFD in the study of preventing the smoke spread in the case of the tunnel fire. A study on fire smoke diffusion delay device using spring elasticity which is excellent in applicability to a tunnel and economical value is studied. In this study, fire smoke spread delay system was developed to fire smoke delay was experimentally analyzed. Fire smoke delay effect of fire smoke delay device appeared. Therefore, it is considered that the can minimize the damage of the victims when installed in the great depth underground double deck tunnels.
The influence of tunnelling on buildings has become an important issue in urban areas. The problem is an interactive one: not only do tunnelling settlements affect existing structures, but existing structures affect tunnel-induced soil movements. In order to examine the constraint of surface settlement and the degradation of building damage parameters, 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are peformed. Also, in this paper, the results of the parametric studies for the variations of the damage parameters due to the ground movements are presented by utilizing 2-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models, totally 162 models. The width of a structure, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel and the depth of tunnel are considered. The interaction is shown by reference to commonly-used building damage parameters, namely angular distortion, deflection ratio, maximum building settlements, maximum differential settlements and horizontal strain. By introducing relative stiffness parameters which combine the bending and axial stiffness of the structure with its width and stiffness of soil, design curves are established. These give a guide as to the likely modification of the greenfield settlement trough caused by a surface structure. They can be used to give initial estimates of likely building damage.

There have been high demands for urban underground structures. However, they should be rapidly constructed while maintaining the functions of adjacent structures and road systems especially in urban areas. In this respect, trenchless excavation methods are considered to very effective in minimizing ground displacements during excavation works. A variety of field conditions such as economic, technical and environmental aspects should be taken into consideration when an optimum trechless excavation method is to be chosen in a given condition. Therefore, this study aims to carry out a fundamental study to select an optimum trenchless excavation method by the decision making technique. Especially, AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) which is a kind of a multiple attribute decision making process is adopted to consider the opinions of experts and to derive reliable decision criteria. As a result, the weights of key factors and the most effective trenchless methods for different ground conditions were proposed in this study.

In recent years, the use of underground spaces becomes more frequent and the demands for urban tunnels are rapidly increasing. The urban tunnels constructed in the ground with a shallow and soft cover might be deformed in various forms on the face, which would lead, the tunnels to behavior 3-dimensionally, which may have a great impact on the longitudinal load transfer. The tunnel face might deform in various forms depending on the construction method, overburden and the heterogeneity of the ground. And accordingly, the type and size of the distribution of the load transferred to the ground adjacent to the tunnel face as well as the form of the loosened ground may appear in various ways depending on the deformation form of the tunnel face. Therefore, in this study was conducted model tests by idealizing the deformation behavior of the tunnel face, that were constant deformation, the maximum deformation on the top and the maximum deformation on the bottom. And the test results were analyzed focusing on the deformation of the face and the longitudinal load transfer at the ground above the tunnel. As results, it turned out that the size and the distribution type of the load, which was transferred to the tunnel as well as the earth pressure on the face were affected by the deformation type of the face. The largest load was transferred to the tunnel when the deformation was in a constant form. Less load was transferred when the maximum deformation on the bottom, and the least load was transferred when the maximum deformation on the top. In addition, it turned out that, if the cover became more shallow, a longitudinal load transfer in the tunnel would limited to the region close to the face; however, if the cover became higher than a certain value, the area of the load transfer would become wider.

Recently, in urban areas there is a tendency to construct more complex network-type tunnels including entrance and exit ramps. At the same time, various one-dimensional programs based on the network theory have been proposed for tunnel ventilation analysis. This paper aims at developing a program that can analyze the ventilation flow rate and pollutants concentration in complex network-type tunnels based on the none hardy-cross method. The flow analysis in the branch was carried out on the basis of the Gradient method, while for the concentration analysis a new logic has been developed to calculate the inflow and outflow concentration automatically in a complex network-type structure. Additionally, in the tunnel segments showing low flow rate, proper grid interval sizes were proposed to reduce numerical error. To verify the applicability of the program, flow rates predicted in the straight tunnels were compared with the classical velocity-diagram method by Stokic and the TVSDM program. The results showed that the errors were within 1%. In addition, the program was applied to the recent ventilation system adopted in the complex network-type urban tunnels.
