  • This study has intended to build a rural landscape evaluation model based on an integrated landscape assessment paradigm of rural region using an additive integration index method and applied the model to the Seondong Region of Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. To reach this goal, this study developed a model to calculate Integrated Landscape Assessment Index. The model has employed the Objective Landscape Index, the Subjective Landscape Index, and the weighted values, and was applied to the Seondong region. This study has found the following results: 1) forests and water spaces were assessed with relatively better visual preferences and better landscape ecosystem; 2) the historic cultural area and scenic agriculture as well as general farm land were assessed with moderate ratings; and, 3) the villages included in development plan, their adjacent arable farming land, and the village watercourses were forming relatively poorer landscape.

  • The purpose of this paper is to seek the dwelling conditions for comfortable life like urban apartment with agriculture in farming area. In order to do above things, we divide types of people who is planning to 'return farm' and need to heavily research and analyze current status of use for farm house's each spaces include outside spaces. so this paper aimed that at first, divide types of farmhouse following agriculture condition for people who is living in rural and survey the present condition and problems by analyzing of present status of space use and draw the improvement plans for those. after then, finally make a architectural basic data for Rural houses plan. For the future, the main purpose of this paper is that make architectural provision possible by researching types and size of storage following sort and size of farm.

  • This study has intended to find strategies improving rural amenity through establishing eco-village. This research presented eco-village establishment as an alternative to solve the problems that current rural villages face, such as FTA farming crisis, aging, weakening of farming competitiveness. Thus, this study has set up ecological rural amenity strategies, based on the principles and cases of both eco-village development and rural amenity through suitability analysis and statistical analysis with survey analysis. This study has defined the eco-rural amenity and set up such categories as environment, history-culture, society, image, and economy. Based on the definition and categories, this study has found the strategies to improve ecological rural amenity in accordance with categories.

  • In spite of the importance of the farm area in Seoul, in providing fresh vegetables, a pleasant environment and a good quality of life for residents, rapid urbanization and industrialization have greatly reduced the farm area. The purpose of this study is to examine farmers' intentions and attitudes to provide supporting data for planning the strategy of urban agricultural development. All the collected data was analyzed using the contingency tables and the Chi-square test using the SAS computer statistical package. Farmers' views on the farming in Seoul were different depending on their status. Therefore, agricultural strategies in there should be considered their different attitudes.

The purpose of this study is to examine farmers' intentions and attitudes to provide supporting data for planning the strategy of urban agricultural development. All the collected data was analyzed using the contingency tables and the Chi-square test using the SAS computer statistical package. Based on analysis of the survey data, the leaseholders were found to be more satisfied with their job than the landowning farmers. Also, the small-scale farmers with green houses showed greater job satisfaction than the ordinary large-scale farmers. Farmers' views on the farming in Seoul were different depending on their status. Therefore, agricultural strategies in there should be considered their different attitudes.

  • A survey was conducted to get information on the utilization of irrigation systems for greenhoyses farming. Three regions were selected which represent geographical chatacteristics such as neighboring urban area, flat-field area, and mountainous area. The number of greenhouses farms interviewed was 432 in total. The contents of the survey consisted of general characteristics of greenhouse farmers, the size and location of greenhouses, cultuvated crops, irrigation method, irrigation scheduling, and irrigation automation. The analysis of the surveyed data showed that greenhouse farmers did not take technical assistances. Proper criteria or guidelines for selection and operation of irrigation systems were not available. Irrigation systems were operated by hand. Irrigation scheduling were executed by farmer's experience. Maintenance of irrigation systems in general were poor. Development of economically reasonable irrigation system is of importance.

  • A field survey with interview was conducted to get information on the irrigation water usage for greenhouse farming. Three study regions were selected which represent geographical characteristics such as ,neighboring urban area, flat-field area, and mountainous area. Several items were investigated and analysed such as location of greenhouse, type of irrigation water resources, type of irrigation method used, way to decide intake facility size, farmers'satisfaction on intake facilities performance and water quality, and needs for water quality test. It was found that greenhouse farmers did not take an advantage of technical assistances. Proper criteria or guidelines for selection and operation of water intake facilities were not available.

  • To have better urban forests in future we are focusing on two major issues like other countries. How we could have more urban forest-quantitative approach-against the expanding of urbanization, and how we could produce better urban forest-qualitative approach-to give a chance in contact with better nature for urban people. Prime surveys on urban forests have been carried out in 6 major cities since 1991, and the city of Daegu which is located on the east southern area of Korea have been case studied for qualitative approaches during last 3 years. Major species of the remnant forests were Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergii and Robinia pseudoacacia. Approximately 20% of the surveyed forests were lost their structure as forests caused by illegal farming, facilities and as the bare ground by excessive visitors. Generally speaking the condition of forests for biotope was very poor in overall. From two years data of monitoring of birds, we found that wooded parkways and woodland squares had more species than street tree areas. Nests were found mainly on the branch of Zelkova serrata, Pinus densiflora and Quercus myrsinaefolia. The size of urban forests mainly determined the species richness of birds. According to the oxygen output and carbon input by photosynthesis measurement, the capability was in order of Platanus occidentalis, Zelkova serrata and Ginko biloba. Air conditioning effects of trees through transpiration measurement was found and the quality of forests also related to the reducing of urban heat-island.

  • This study attempts to explore settlement and adaptation status involved in differing urban-to-rural migration types in Gyeongbuk Province and suggests policy implications based on this analysis. The attributes of urban-to-rural migrants in Gyeongbuk Province differ spatio-temporally, and their status of settlement and adaptation is also different depending on urban-to-rural migration types. "U-turn" migrants who are mostly first-generation rural-to-urban migrants with experience in farming and rural community life engage primarily in crop agriculture. "J-turns" and "I-turns," who have no experience in farming or rural community life, migrated for idyllic rural life. The household income of these types is relatively low compared to U-turn type. U-turns' degree of adaptation is relatively lower than the other types, and U-turn migrants mainly rely on family and community assets in order to solve problems. J-turns' and I-turns' degree of satisfaction is relatively high. However they typically have substantial difficulties in adapting due to lack of pre-migration preparation. Policy implications are : 'switching away from general and inclusive policies of support,' 'transition to policies embedded in the attributes of regions and migration types,' 'improvement of policy governance,' 'enhancement of support for pre-migration preparation and customized support based on the needs of migrants,' and 'comprehensive improvements of settlement environment to better integrate migrants with current residents.'.

  • Urbanization has caused increase of traffic jams, food shortage, housing, and environmental pollution in the world in recent decades. Urban agriculture, such as roof garden, can relieve the phenomenon of urban heat island causing from the urbanization. The study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of rooftop garden (farm) in 40 areas in Seoul, Korea, where the 'cabbage', 'lettuce', 'pepper', and 'mini-tomatoes' were the most preferred vegetables and fruit. The problems in the rooftop garden during a cultivation was observed for drainage system, soil management, cost or quality of planting mat and diseases and insects. The image of urban agriculture showed a positive words, such as 'bright', 'clean', 'open' and 'good' according to the survey.
