In the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism, Japanese style official residence played major role at the implantation of modern dwellings into Korea and its influences on Korean modern dwellings are distinguishable. This study focuses on the Japanese style official residence implanted into Korea before 1910. Before 1910 Japanese civilians in Korea builded just a traditional Japanese dwellings at the Japanese settlement in the ports opened. But Japanese engineers engaged in governmental organization of construction in the Old-Korean Empire builded a central corridor type Japanese dwellings as official residence. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling was an urban dwelling compromised between Japanese style and western style and distinguished by an outer-court type plan, Japanese entrance hall, central corridor and western style reception room. It is certified that the central corridor type Japanese dwelling was implanted into Korea before 1910 and this was the first time an urban dwelling to be implanted and spread through the whole Korea. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling implanted into Korea took in On-Dol and transformed to Korea-Japanese eclectic style. The central corridor type Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism makes function as a precedent of a modern urban dwelling to Korean and makes Korean dwellings transform from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the basic design elements for dwelling environment planning of downtown in Taegu. The evaluation of the dwelling environment should be approached from the satisfaction and the cognitive of the residents, that are based on their desire and various values on the conditions of residential area. This paper concerns the satisfaction and the congnitive image structure of the residents in the various dwelling types, from which design elements for dwelling environments can be derived. The results are as folIows: 1) The analysis on the satisfaction of dwell ins environment shows lots of displeasure about the lack of open-spaces and the housing low-quality, neighborhood in Mun-hwa, Korean style housing and the low-rise apartment areas. In order to make the variety types of dowelling in downtown district, the improvement of housing qualities and the expantion of the urban facilities for the open-spaces and communities are need. 2) The design elements of dwelling environments in downtown find out the important planning elements for urban design. The evaluation of the cognitive image structures about the safety and affection should be considered in design for urban dwelling areas.
The current environmental issue is how a dwelling adapts into a given climate in which the design is applied by ecology without damaging the natural environment. In another word, the main issue in the twenty first century will be how we meet the human needs to dwellings applied by the residential environment. Therefore, we have to provide a hospitable place for residents' mental and physical health through "Green Design," emerging as the critical design of urban collective dwellings. Based on these conceptions, the purpose of this study is to suggest the way of designing the urban collective dwelling applied by ecology, proffering wealthy life style to residents with the preservation of natural environment as applying an ecological concept into the design of collective dwellings that represent a contemporary housing type for urban residents. In order to design the urban collective dwelling applied by ecology, this study introduces the outdoor design in friendly surroundings, the collective construct of a delightful housing, and the organic connection between inside and outside rooms.
The purpose of this study is to examine the changes of housing characteristics between dwellings occupied by two and more households and one household occupying dwellings over 10 years using the Population and Housing Censuses in 1985, 1990, and 1995. One dwelling for each household, referred to the ratio of the number of dwellings to the number of households, has been one of the most important housing goals in Korea. The results indicated that the ratio of dwellings occupied by one household as well as that of households occupying one dwelling by oneself have been increased since 1985. However, the number of dwellings occupied by two and more households have been decreased but the number of households who share one dwelling with other households have never been decreased. One dwelling for each household has been mainly increased by the multifamily attached dwellers in urban residences. Single-family dettached dwellings in the urban area are the most often shared with other households. Housing policymakers should consider not only the rapidly increasing single households but also renters shared one dwelling with others mostly homeowners of single-family dettached dwellings.
Architecture is not only coming out of the making of a building room but also contributing to the making of an urban room. "The inside is not a contradiction of the outside...architecturally opened". (De Carli, 1967) The urban room is felt as a sense of rapport between building and city because architecture makes the building room closed simultaneously open toward the city. Architecture exists between both rooms. There is the possibility of integrating, by the conception of interior, architecture and urbanism and thus, the possibility of giving a theoretical ground to Interior Architecture/Design; "all architecture is interior architecture". (Ottolini, 1996) It is in line with the idea of the "Fusing: Landscape/Urbanism/Architecture". (Holl, 2009) The paper deals with, through literature review, a possibility of the fusing: Interior/Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism. The first site explores the meaning of the urban place as a thing, which gives a possibility of combining the building interior and the urban interior. The second site illustrates the idea of the urban interior for dwelling. The urban interior is definitely a place of dwelling to keep human inhabitancy, which takes place in a united interior of the building interior and the urban interior. The third site clarifies the idea of the urban interior. While the building interior gives human being with the private stage, the urban interior provides him with the public stage of city life. The two different interiors constitute an interior world for his trajectory of dwelling. The last site traces the conceptual development of the urban interior. The trace comes to a conclusion that architecture, landscape, and urbanism can be unified by the conception of interior and the urban interior is an object of "Interior Architecture/Design". This paper is theorized as a twofold singular of the building interior and the urban interior. Ultimately, it is relevant to the theoretical principle of fusing interior/architecture/landscape/urbanism, and aims at offering a departing point to consider the urban interior as an object of "Interior Architecture/Design" and for the future studies of the urban interior.
The purpose of this study is to investigate and present a method for measuring public accessibility to urban open spaces. A basic assumption is that, for urban open space policies, accessibility is more important than per capita area. In this study, for the purpose of simplicity, a residential area is assumed to have access to open space if it is within a certain distance from an urban open space. Official city planning map is overlayed with a 200m grid and each cell of dwelling area is checked whether it is within a certain distance from a cell categorized as urban open space. A computer program for widely commercialized personal computer is developed for data processing so that local governments without access to more sophisticated systems can carry out similar studies for their own jurisdictions. Five cities, big, small, old and new, are selected to test the proposed method. Dwelling areas of Ansan new Town have highest accessibility to open spaces(93.4% of dwelling cells have open space cell within 500m). Seoul (91.2%), Suwon(78.2%), Pusan(73.8%), and Inchon(61.4%) have less accessibility. If we assume the Ansan City residents are evenly distributed over the dwelling area, 93.4% of the population has open spaces within walking distance of 500m. However, if we consider physical barriers such as arterial roads, railroads, and streams that reduce the accessibility, less than 93.4% of Ansan city residents enjoy good access to open spaces. Though a further detailed analysis is needed to picture the microscopic accessibility, this method can serve as a useful tool for urban open space policy and open space alternatives evaluations.
The purpose of this thesis is a searching out the characteristics of Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism and its influences on Korean modern dwellings especially in the time of 1930's. At the early stage of the colonial time($1905{\sim}1919$), the central corridor type Japanese dwellings were implanted into Korea for the Japanese official residences. The central corridor type Japanese dwelling was an urban modern dwelling compromised between Japanese style and western style and distinguished by an outer-court type plan, Japanese entrance hall, central corridor and western style reception room. After the 1920's the central corridor type Japanese dwellings have spreaded itself and became a prototype of a modern dwelling in Korea. The characteristics of the central corridor type Japanese dwellings have influenced on the Korean high class dwellings and Korean architects' proposals for modern dwelling in the time of 1930's. By the implantation and spread of the central corridor type Japanese dwellings, Korean modern dwellings at the same time have affected and undergone transformation. The aspects of transformation were ; The outbreaking of the Japanese style entrance and central corridor, the transformation of MaDang from the inner court with a function of circulation into the outer court garden with plants and the transformation of Korean dwellings from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type. The central corridor type Japanese dwellings implanted into Korea in the time of the rule of Japanese imperialism makes function as a precedent of a modern urban dwelling to Korean and makes Korean dwellings transform from the rural inner court type into the urban outer court type.
The past concept of constructing houses was focused on how to overcome the limitation of consuming natural resources such as energy and materials, which increased the official cost and the environmental pollution. On the other hand, the echo-friendly concept has considered the harmony between human being and nature more critically and has applied the characteristics of natural environment into a unique dwelling design by developing constructs and materials adjusted to the particular climate, making them into a unit of impacting positively the complicated system. The current environmental issue is how a dwelling adapts into a given climate in which the design is applied by ecology without damaging the natural environment. In another word, the main issue in the twenty first century will be how we meet the human needs to dwellings applied by the residential environment. Therefore, we have to provide a hospitable place for residents' mental and physical health through "Green Design", emerging as the critical design of urban collective dwellings.
The aim of this paper is to examine the determinants of residential satisfaction and attachment according to the urban multi-family dwelling types. On the basis of the surveys, the factor analysis and regression are employed as the empirical analysis on residential satisfaction and attachment in Daegu metropolitan city. The major findings are as follows; First, as for post-occupancy evaluation of residential environment of building and outside, the residents of complex type of multi-family housing satisfied with most of items more than studio type except the location, amenity facilities around building and utilities fee. Second, about the Residential Satisfaction and Attachment by types, the residents of complex type of multi-family housing satisfied with most of items more than studio type too. Third, the determinants in residential Satisfaction of complex types are 'welfare and amenity facilities factor', 'maintenance factor' and 'location factor'. On the other hand, the determinants in residents of studio type are 'inexpensive rent fee factor', 'welfare and amenity facilities factor' and 'maintenance factor'. Going forward, this research will help us better understand residential satisfaction from the point of residents and find new ways to improve resident satisfaction and attachment.
Flat or Multiple Dwelling Houses are relatively vulnerable to crime safety. Crime prevention measures are urgently needed because crime is 2.6 times higher than in real apartments. Through the analysis of domestic and foreign crime prevention design standards, field survey, and interviews with experts, 27 items of crime prevention design criteria for flat or multiple dwelling house were derived, and ten design criteria that should be considered first by the expert AHP were derived. As a result of the pilot evaluation of existing flat or multiple dwelling house, the houses completed after 2015 have relatively high level of crime prevention, but the houses constructed before that are very vulnerable. The policy and system improvement plan based on the analysis result is as follows. First, new housing should be promoted to meet minimum criteria by supplying and educating public officials, architects, and building owners in the short term to provide criteria for flat or multiple dwelling house crime prevention plans. Second, existing housing should be supported with basic crime prevention support projects such as security windows for flat or multiple dwelling house where security of residential environment such as urban renewal policy is poor. Third, the Enforcement Decree of the Building Act shall be revised to make the crime prevention environment design of flat or multiple dwelling house obligatory, and the criteria of flat or multiple dwelling house crime prevention plan should be reflected in the notice of crime prevention building standard.
