  • This study present an efficient way of operating drainage pump station as part of nonstructural measures for reducing urban flood damage. The water level in the drainage pump station was forecast using Neuro-Fuzzy and then operation rule of the drainage pump station was determined applying the genetic algorithm method based on the predicted inner water level. In order to reflect the topographical characteristics of the drainage area when constructing the Neuro-Fuzzy model, the model considering spatial parameters was developed. Also, the model was applied a penalty type of genetic algorithm so as to prevent repeated stops and operations while lowering my highest water level. The applicability of the development model for the five drainage pump stations in the Mapo drainage area was verified. It is considered to be able to effectively manage urban drainage facilities in the development of these operating rules.

  • The frequency of urban floods is recently increased as a consequence of climate change and haphazard development in urban area. To mitigate and prevent the flood damage, we generally utilized a numerical model to investigate the causes and risk of urban flood. Contrary to general flood inundation model simulating only the surface flow, the model needs to consider flow of the sewer network system like SWMM and ILLUDAS. However, this kind of model can not consider the interaction between the surface flow and drainage network. Therefore, we tried to evaluate the impact of bidirectional interaction between sewer and surface flow in urban flooding analysis based on simulations using the quasi-interacted model and the interacted model. As a general quasi-interacted model, SWMM5 and FLUMEN are utilized to analyze the flow of drainage network and simulate the inundation area, respectively. Then, FLO-2D is introduced to consider the interaction between the surface flow and sewer system. The two method applied to the biggest flood event occurred in July 2011 in Sadang area, South Korea. Based on the comparison with observation data, we confirmed that the model considering the interaction the sewer network and surface flow, showed a good agreement than the quasi-interacted model.

  • Recently in urban area flood damages increase due to local concentrated heavy rainfall. Even in the cities where stormwater drainage systems are relatively well established flood damage still occurs because of the capacity limitations of the existing stormwater drainage systems. When the flood exceeds the capacity limitation of the urban storm sewer system, it yields huge property losses of public facilities involving roadway inundation to paralyze industrial and transportation system of the city. To prevent such flood damages in urban area, it is necessary to develop adequate inundation analysis model which can consider complicated geometry of urban area and artificial drainage system simultaneously. The Dual-Drainage model used in this study is the urban inundation analysis model which combines SWMM with DEM based 2-dimensional surface flood inundation model. In this study, the dual drainage model has been modified to consider the effect of complex buildings in urban area. Through the simulation of time variable inundation process, it is possible to identify inundation alert locations as well as to establish emergency action plan for the residencial area vulnerable to flood inundation.

  • In this study, a consolidometer for radially inward drainage under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading was developed. Theoretical solutions for determining the effective vertical stress and the coefficient of consolidation from the test result were also proposed. Reconstituted kaolinite samples which were consolidated up to 130 kPa were used to verify the developed consolidometer and the theory. Comparative experiments with CRS loading and incremental loading (IL) were carried out in radially in ward drainage as well as vertical and radially outward drainage. The results obtained from the developed CRS loading test agreed consistently with those of the conventional incremental loading test according to drainage directions. And the effect of drainage direction and drain diameter to consolidation characteristics was also evaluated. From the test results the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method were verified.

  • One of the big problems facing municipalities is the management and control of urban flooding where urban drainage systems are under growing pressure due to increases in urbanization, population and changes in the climate. Urban flooding causes environmental and infrastructure damage, especially to roads, this damage increasing maintenance costs. The aim of the present study is to develop a decision support tool to identify the performance of storm networks to address future risks associated with climate change in the Middle East region and specifically, illegal sewer connections in the storm networks of Karbala city, Iraq. The storm water management model has been used to simulate Karbala's storm drainage network using continuous hourly rainfall intensity data from 2008 to 2016. The results indicate that the system is sufficient as designed before consideration of extra sewage due to an illegal sewer connection. Due to climate changes in recent years, rainfall intensity has increased reaching 33.54 mm/h, this change led to flooding in 47% of manholes. Illegal sewage will increase flooding in the storm system at this rainfall intensity from between 39% to 52%.

  • In this study, the urban runoff models, ILLUDAS model and SWMM, are analyzed the probable peak discharge and discharge using rainfall distribution by Huff's method at Bum-uh chun area in Taegu city. The probability rainfall and intensity is analyzed by Pearson-III type. The rainfall duration, 90 minutes, is determined by the critical duration computed the maximun peak discharge for some rainfall durations. The peak discharge according to Huff's rainfall distribution types compute in order of type 3, type 4, type2, and type 1, so Huff's 3 type is selected as an adequate rainfall distribution in Bum-uh chun basin. ILLUDAS model and SWMM are shown as good models in Bum-uh chun, but SWMM is computed higher peak discharge than ILLUDAS model, so SWMM is shown as the adequate urban runoff model for the design of interior drainage in urban basin.

  • Population and development are concentrated by urbanization. Consequently, the usage of underground area and the riverside area have been increased. By increasing impermeable layer, the urban basin drainage is depending on level of sewer. Flood damage is occurred by shortage of sewer capacity and poor interior drainage at river stage. Many of researches about flood stress the unavailability of connection at the river stage with the internal inundation organically. In this study, flood calculated considering rainfall and combined inland-river. Also, using urban runoff model analyze the overflow of sewer. By using results of SWMM model, using flood inundation analysis model analyzed internal drainage efficiency of drainage system. Applying SWMM model, which results to flood inundation analysis model, analyzes internal drainage efficiency of drainage system under localized heavy rain in a basin of the city. The results of SWMM model show the smoothness of internal drainage can be impossible to achieve because of the influence of the river level and sewer overflow appearing. The main manholes were selected as the manhole of a lot of overflow volume. Overflow reduction scenarios were selected for expansion of sewer conduit and instruction retention pond. Overflow volume reduces to 45% and 33~64% by retention pond instruction and sewer conduit expansion. In addition, the results of simulating of flood inundation analysis model show the flood occurrence by road runoff moving along the road slope. Flooded area reduces to 19.6%, 60.5% in sewer conduit expansion scenarios.

  • Urban flooding is usually caused by the surcharge of storm sewers. For this reason, previous studies on urban flooding are mainly concentrated on the simulation of urban drainage systems. However these approaches that find the pipes which have insufficient drainage capacity are very approximate and unreasonable ways in establishing both flood prevention and flood-loss reduction planning. In this study, a two-dimensional model linked the existing ILLUDAS model is developed to calculate the accurate and resonable solution about urban flood inundation and it is verified by using the simulation of July 2001 flood in Seoul. In the urban area with a small difference of ground elevations, the two-dimensional flood propagation phases must be considered to make a accurate analysis for inundated area and depth. The result of this study can be used to construct fundamental data for a flood control plan and establish a urban flood forecasting/warning system.

  • Reliable hydrologic data acquisition is the basic and essential requirement for efficient water management. Especially the acquisition of various stream data in a certain location is very important to construct on alarm system to response an urban flood which occurs frequently due to the effect of climate change. Although the frequency of stream inundation flood occurrence becomes low owing to the consistent stream improvement, the urban flood due to the drainage system problems such as deterioration and bad management occurs continuously. The consistent management and current status understanding of the urban drainage system is essential to reduce the urban flood. The purpose of this study is to develop the urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system which has the capability of collecting stream data whenever, wherever and to whomever without expert knowledge using Code Division Multiple Access technique and Bluetooth near-distance wireless communication technique. The urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system consists of three stages. In the first stage, the stream information obtained by using ubiquitous floater is transferred to the server computer. In the second stage, the current state of the urban drainage system is assessed through the server computer. In the last stage, the information is provided to the user through a GUI. As a result of applying, the developed urban runoff network flow velocity monitoring system to Woncheon-Stream in Suwon, the information necessary for urban drainage management can be managed in real time.
