  • The behavior of the work materials in the chip-tool interface in extremely high strain rates and temperatures is more that of viscous liquids than that of normal solid metals. In these circumstances the principles of fluid mechanics can be invoked to describe the metal flow in the neighborhood of the cutting edge. In the present paper an Eulerian finite element model is presented that simulates metal flow in the vicinity of the cutting edge when machining a low carbon steel with carbide cutting tool. The work material is assumed to obey visco-plastic (Bingham solid) constitutive law and Von Mises criterion. Heat generation is included in the model, assuming adiabatic conditions within each element. the mechanical and thermal properties of the work material are accepted to vary with the temperature. The model is based on the virtual work-stream function formulation, emphasis is given on analyzing the formation of the stagnant metal zone ahead of the cutting edge. The model predicts flow field characteristics such as material velocity effective stress and strain-rate distributions as well as built-up layer configuration

  • The flow of the molten drop in the GMAW was observed to explain the mechanism of its formation and break-up process. Fluid flew analysis was made with the assumption that the electrode wire acts like fluid, and it is shown how the convection of the drop inside affects its flow, from the formation to the break-up of the drop. In later part, the process of the spray mode development at high current is shown, as well as the one of the globular mode, by the fluid flow analysis.

  • Flow-Accelerated Corrosion Behavior of SA106 Gr.C steel in room temperature alkaline solution simulating the CANDU primary water condition was studied using Rotating Cylinder Electrode. Systems of RCE were set up and electrochemical parameters were applied at various rotating speeds. Corrosion current density decreased up to pH 10.4 then it increased rapidly at higher pH. This is due to the increasing tendency of cathodic and anodic exchange half-cell current. Corrosion potential shifted slightly upward with rotating velocity. Passive film was formed from pH 9.8 by the mechanism of step oxidation and the subsequent precipitation of ferrous species into hydroxyl compound. Above pH 10.4, the film formation process was active and the film became stable. Corrosion current density showed increment in pH 6.98 with the rotating velocity, while it soon saturated from 1000 rpm above pH 9.8. This seems that activation process which represents formation of passive film on the bare metal surface controls the entire corrosion process

  • A numerical study of the unsteady flow in an over-expanded thrust optimized contour and compressed truncated perfect rocket nozzle is carried out in present paper. These rocket nozzles are subject to flow separation in transient phase at engine start-up and/or engine shut-down. The separation flow structures at different pressure ratios are observed. The start-up process exhibits two different shock structures such as FSS (Free Shock Separation) and RSS (Restricted Shock Separation). For a range of pressure ratios, hysteresis phenomenon occurs between these two separation patterns. A three-dimension compressible Navier-Stokes solver is used for the present study. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. The computed nozzle wall pressures show a good agreement with the experimental measurements. Present results have shown that present code can be used for the analysis of the transient flows in nozzle.

  • This paper investigated the new calibration algorithm of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe for measuring three-dimensional flow velocity components. This new calibration algorithm was used for velocity data reduction from the calibration map and based on the combination of a look-up, a binary search algorithm and a geometry transformation including the translation and reflection of nodes in a calibration map. The calibration map was expanded up to the application angle, ${\pm}55^{\circ}$ of a probe. This velocity data reduction method showed a perfect performance without any kind of interpolating errors in calculating yaw and pitch angles from the calibration map. Moreover, when it was applied to an actual flow field including a swirling flow, a good result came out on the whole.

  • Diesel vehicle is growing in importance in light-duty sector as a way of reducing greenhouse gases due to improved fuel economy. Carbon monoxide, gas-phase hydrocarbon and organic fraction of diesel particulates can be oxidized to harmless products using a diesel warm-up catalyst (WCC). This study investigated the effect of a turbocharger and a baffle on flow fields and temperature distributions in the WCC for Diesel vehicles by a numerical analysis. In the case of the WCC with the turbocharger, velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC have the relatively homogeneous distributions by the swirl generated from the turbocharger. Velocity vectors and temperatures of inlet of the WCC with the turbocharger and the baffle have the improved distributions in homogeneity compared with the case of the WCC without the baffle. The homogeneous flow field and the temperature distribution in the WCC may contribute to improve the conversion performance of the catalysts.

  • The experimental study for an operational characteristics and performance of the sodium heat pipe were carried out. For an experiment. the heat pipe which is 1000mm length and 25.4mm diameter of stainless steel container with 50 mesh of screen wick using sodium as a working fluid is manufactured and tested as functions of heat flow rate, inclined angle and operating temperature. The test results are as follows. During the start-up. frontal start up was observed because of the vapor density increasing as increased the hot zone. Also, the heat pipe showed uniform temperature over than $420^{\circ}C$ of the operating temperature. The average heat transfer coefficient increased as the heat flux and the vapor temperature increase, and the range of the total thermal resistance was 0.075-0.04 $^{\circ}C/W$ at the 12-53.55 $kW/m^2$ of heat flux and $500-750^{\circ}C$of operating temperature. The maximum heat flow rate was 750W at the 10 degree of top heating mode.

  • During the past 50 years methods for predicting wave overtopping of coastal structures have coastal structures have continuously been developed Wave overtopping is one of the most important processes for the design of seawalls. The term 'wave overtopping' is used here to refer to the processes where waves hit a sloping structure run up the slope and, if the crest level of the slope is lower than the highest run up level, overtop the structure. Wave overtopping is dependent on the processes associated with breaking wave. The Numerical model is based on Navier-Stokes equation and Marker-Density Function of method for nonlinear free-surface flow by Miyata & Park(1995). The influence of how the slopes of seawalls, wave type and crest freeboard affect overtopping discharges has been investigated. The research of study using the new development nonlinear free-surface flow numerical model SOLA-VOF are presented.

MR Imaging of Congenital Heart Diseases in Adolescents and Adults

  • Echocardiography and catheterization angiography suffer certain limitations in the evaluation of congenital heart diseases in adults, though these are overcome by MRI, in which a wide field-of view, unlimited multiplanar imaging capability and three-dimensional contrast-enhanced MR angiography techniques are used. In adults, recently introduced fast imaging techniques provide cardiac MR images of sufficient quality and with less artifacts. Ventricular volume, ejection fraction, and vascular flow measurements, including pressure gradients and pulmonary-to-systemic flow ratio, can be calculated or obtained using fast cine MRI, phase-contrast MR flow-velocity mapping, and semiautomatic analysis software. MRI is superior to echocardiography in diagnosing partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection, unroofed coronary sinus, anomalies of the pulmonary arteries, aorta and systemic veins, complex heart diseases, and postsurgical sequelae. Biventricular function is reliably evaluated with cine MRI after repair of tetralogy of Fallot, and Senning's and Mustard's operations. MRI has an important and growing role in the morphologic and functional assessment of congenital heart diseases in adolescents and adults.

Measurement of Liquid-Metal Flow with a Dynamic Neutron Radiography (중성자 래디오그래피를 이용한 액체금속 유동장 측정)

  • The flow-field of a liquid-metal system is very important for the safety analysis and the design of the steam generator of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor. Dynamic neutron radiography (DNR) is suitable for a visualization and measurement of a liquid metal flow and a two-phase flow in a metallic duct. However, the three dimensional DNR techniques is not enough to obtain the velocity information in the wide channel up to now. In this research, a high speed DNR technique was applied to visualize the heavy liquid-metal flow field in the narrow channel with the HANARO-beam facility. The images were taken with a high frame-rate neutron radiography at 250 fps and analyzed with a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) method. The images were compared with the results of the commercial CFX code to study the feasibility of DNR technique for the measuring the heavy liquid-metal flow field. The PIV images could discern the turbulent vortex flow in the two-dimensional narrow channel.
