  • Sciaphila secundiflora occurs on Jeju Island as a second species of the genus Sciaphila in Korea. This is an important finding in relation to the flora of Korea, as species of the genus Sciaphila are concentrated mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia. Few species are found on the mainland of Asia, in Japan, Taiwan, China (Hainan), tropical Africa, Australia, and on the Pacific islands. In this paper, the species S. secundiflora is described and illustrated as a new record from Korea. In addition, we suggest that the species of the genus Sciaphila should be protected with regard to its habitat characteristics and for its phytogeographic and climatic significance.

  • In Korea, species of the genus Ptecticus Loew, 1855 (Family Stratiomyidae) have been known as three species, P. aurifer (Walker, 1854), P. matsumurae Lindner, 1936 and P. japonicus (Thunberg, 1789) (= P. tenebrifer (Walker, 1849)). Additionally, an unrecorded species, P. sinchangensis ${\hat{O}}uchi$, 1938, was found in Korea. We therefore report the species for the first time in Korea with morphological diagnosis and key for the identification of the Korean species of the genus. In total, the members of the genus Ptecticus are officially recognized as four species in Korea.

  • One of the largest genera of subfamily Banchinae, the genus Glypta has been reported 505 species in the World. In this study, the genus Glypta is reported for the first time from South Korea. Twelve species are recognized, one of which is described as new: Glypta clypeorostrata sp. nov. We diagnose 11 newly recorded species(G. biauriculata, G. breviterebra, G. densepunctata, G. extincta, G. fronticornis, G. incisa, G. media, G. nigrina, G. talitzkii, G. tamanukii, and G. touyaensis) and provide a key along with digital images of 12 South Korean species.

  • The genus Ephedrus Haliday, 1833 is a large taxon of Aphidiinae, consisting of 48 valid species in the world. This genus is considered to be important as a biological control agency, which includes solitary koinobiont parasitoids on aphids. One of its interesting characteristics is both male and female have 11-segmented antennae. In previous study, this genus was subdivided into three subgenus, Breviephedrus, Ephedrus and Fovephedrus, based on molecular and morphological characters. In this study, one Ephedrus species is firstly recorded from South Korea. Since it has been collected from Geumsan-gun in 2005 and deposited as dried specimen at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Netherland, we recently confirmed it. Description and illustrations of the E. lacertosus are provided.

  • Talaromyces is a genus within the phylum Ascomycota (class Eurotiomycetes, order Eurotiales, family Trichocomaceae). Many species in this genus are known to produce diverse secondary metabolites with great potential for agricultural, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. During a survey on fungal diversity in the genus Talaromyces in Korea, six strains were isolated from soil, indoor air, and freshwater environments. Based on morphological, physiological, and multi-locus (ITS, BenA, CaM, and RPB2) phylogenetic analyses, we identified five previously unrecorded species in Korea (T. brevis, T. fusiformis, T. muroii, T. ruber, and T. soli) and a new species (T. echinulatus sp. nov.) belonging to section Talaromyces. Herein, detailed descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic tree are provided.

  • A total of 35 bacterial strains were isolated from various sediment samples. From 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities higher than 98.7% and the formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to independent and predefined bacterial species. No previous official reports have described these 35 species in Korea. The unrecorded species were assigned to 6 phyla, 10 classes, 18 orders, 23 families, and 31 genera. At the genus level, the unrecorded species were affiliated with Terriglobus of the phylum Acidobacteria, as well as with Mycobacterium, Rhodococcus, Kineococcus, Phycicoccus, Agromyces, Cryobacterium, Microbacterium, and Arthrobacter; Catellatospora of the class Actinomycetia; Lacibacter of the class Chitinophagia; Algoriphagus and Flectobacillus of the class Cytophagia; Flavobacterium and Maribacter of the class Flavobacteriia; Bacillus, Cohnella, Fontibacillus, Paenibacillus, Lysynibacillus, and Paenisporosarcina of the class Bacilli; Bradyrhizobium, Gemmobacter, Loktanella, and Altererythrobacter of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Acidovorax of the class Betaproteobacteria; Aliiglaciecola, Cellvibrio, Arenimonas, and Lysobacter of class Gammaproteobacteria; and Roseimicrobium of the class Verrucomicrobia. The selected strains were subjected to further taxonomic characterization, including Gram reaction, cellular and colonial morphology, and biochemical properties. This paper provides detailed descriptions of the 35 previously unrecorded bacterial species.
