  • Hanbok had the history of more than 2,000 years, so Hanbok represents the traditional Korean style of dress design. Since 1980's, Hanbok has been changed to be suitable for contemporary society with diverse titles such as reformed Korean clothes, living Korean clothes, contemporary Korean clothes, and fashion Korean clothes, etc. However, Korean clothes of such a new style have not overcome a limitation in traditional styles in terms of design. In this regard, it is necessary for us to try to have the world fashion industry recognize the fashion look of 'Korean style' through the contemporary fashion of Korean image and to pursue the globalization of Korean style through this fashion. This study is firstly to review the characteristics of Korean beauty, secondly to examine the concept in Korean fashion design, and thirdly to iud out the characteristics of contemporary Korean fashion design through the study of successful cases. The characteristics of Korean beauty can be classified into natural beauty, abstract beauty, and humorous beauty. Korean beauty shows the nature and the life of Korean people, and it should make people aware of the character and the tradition of Korean culture. The Korean fashion design is the one that utilize the Korea's unique sentiment or sense of Korean beauty that has been succeeded from the ancient to the present into fashion design by way of visual element like design, color and texture. And the successful Korean fashion designs were the universal fashion designs that enable Korean culture to be hewn to the world through fashion and that enable the entire world market to agree and to accept Korean style. In order to create the global Korean design, it is necessary to assimilate the Western style to Korean style and newly create it into a compromised form. And it is necessary to look for a universal sense of Korean beauty that could be accepted by the people of the world.

  • This study investigated the concept of fashion as art by examining whether or not university students, rather than professional art critics, consider fashion to be art. The survey subjects were 146 university students, randomly chosen from textiles and clothing-related classes offered in 4 different universities in Seoul. A survey with the following 3 questions was conducted between September 2005 and June 2006: 1. What is art? 2. Is fashion art? 3. Explain the reason why fashion is, or is not, art. Morris Weitz's open concept of art is applied to discuss whether fashion can be classified as art. According to Weitz, there are no universal commonalities among arts. Therefore, art can be defined based on similarities among preexisting art forms and movements. As a result, respondents mentioned the following as characteristics of art: expressiveness, creativity, influence on viewers' emotion, tendency to make life bountiful, particular behaviors or objects, something valuable, formalities, etc. These answers parallel the features of art discussed by professional art critics. In addition, 12 of the 146 respondents considered fashion was not art, 20 placed it on the border while the remaining 114 affirmed a positive relation. Respondents who considered fashion to be art or placed it on the border listed the similar features mentioned in the answers to the first question as similarities between fashion and art. On the other hand, features of fashion such as commercial, whimsical, impermanent and utilitarian properties were answered as dissimilarities between fashion and art. However, these dissimilarities do not serve as obstacles for considering fashion as art, since Weitz's open concept of art does not assume the existence of universal traits of art. Therefore, referring to Weitz's open concept of art, fashion can be considered as art, since reasonable similarities between fashion and art were designated by the majority of respondents.

  • Currently in Korea, Researches on universal design have been actively accomplished in various fields as not only housing and public space, but also product design and education. The purpose of this study is to analyze previous researches on universal design and to identify its research trends which might suggest the future directions of the related studies. In this study, researches on universal design were analyzed to classify the types according to research area, objects and respondents. Two hundreds twenty one papers(journal articles, theses, dissertations, etc.) which were published in Korea from 1997 to 2008 were analyzed. The results were as follows. Researches on universal design have increased quantitatively and research topics have been diverse. In the 1990s, with the introduction of universal design concept, research area focused on space design, but since 2000 researches on universal design have been expanded to apply the fashion, product design and education. In terms of research objects, the studies about evaluation and case analysis have conducted more than those about principles and planning design. With regard to research respondent, the studies for the elderly or people with disabilities and those of all people including a specific target have conducted in a similar ratio. Previous studies were contributed to expand the topics of universal design and it is time to study the applications based on previous research results for utilization and dissemination of universal design. Also it is necessary to conduct interdisciplinary studies in the field of universal design.

  • Over the past few years, the fashion industry has faced numerous environmental issues and sustainability is being promoted as the key to success. This study conducted in-depth interviews with a range of stakeholders, such as designers and marketing professionals from upcycled Korean fashion brands, to examine how their sustainable values are reflected and developed through corporate activities related to planning, production, promotion, and distribution. The sustainable values inferred from the interviews were coded based on Schwartz's universal values with a view to addressing conflicts of values and promoting the sustainability of upcycled fashion brands in Korea. Through this process, the study derived universalistic, economic, and self-oriented sustainable values. The study also proposed a conceptual framework for upcycled fashion brands by discussing difficulties and limitations and offer proposals that could help the industry. The results indicate that a key driver for market success is promoting sustainable values in upcycled fashion. Finally, suggestions are offered for follow-up research that can further support sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a workwear design that takes into account the characteristics of people with severe developmental disabilities who can engage in vocational activities. The aim was to identify needs according to the specific characteristics of people with severe disabilities to design work clothes and develop products according to universal design guidelines. This research method was conducted through representative interviews from a company employing people with severe dis- abilities in Daegu to determine the requirements for workers-related work clothes, and then applied universal design guidelines to perform appropriate design. The results of the study show that the hygiene and warmth of clothing are important for people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, the use of bright materials is required. Second, people with brain lesions often have low body temperature due to difficulties with blood circulation, for which warmth is a required factor. Third, people with severe developmental disabilities should not be differentiated in comparison to people without disabilities, therefore, it was important to use nondiscriminatory designs. Accordingly, it was more efficient to modify and supplement clothing designed for non-disabled people with hidden functions to suit specific characteristics, rather than to develop specialized clothing. These demands were found to conform to what is referred to as a universal design concept, through which three nondiscriminatory shirt designs and two easy-to-use pants were designed.

  • The beauty of the body could separately be defined from area to area, but there can't be any universal definition of it that is applicable throughout the world. The modern discourses on the body have frequently dealt with that, and the beauty of the body should be studied in light of sociocultural background. In today's world fashion industry, the body is represented in various ways, and how to express the body itself is considered from diverse perspectives. As it's now required to approach to fashion from the sociocultural standpoint of the body. a semiotic interpretation method was introduced. The reason was that from the viewpoint of semiotics, the beauty of the body has different implications for society as cultural sign, and they also could be regarded as sociocultural codes. In order to improve new light on the aesthetic consciousness of the body and how it's represented in modern fashion, earlier studies and existing theories were examined. The semiotic interpretation method was used to find out what the aesthetic consciousness of the body stood for and what implication it had for fashion. And in which way fashion represented aesthetic consciousness, including satire, pleasure, grotesque and decadence, through the body was examined. Fashion creates an artificial beauty of the body, and change in the body is followed by change in fashion.
