  • The stress corrosion index of Kumamoto andesite are evaluated by two types of testing method. One is the uniaxial compression test under various water vapor pressures, and the other is the double torsion (DT) test under a constant water vapor pressure. For the uniaxial compression tests, the uniaxial compressive strength increases linearly with decreasing water vapor pressure on the double logarithmic coordinates. As the results, the stress corrosion index obtained is estimated 44. On the other hand, in the DT test, the relaxation (RLX) test and the constant displacement rate (CDR) test were conducted. For the CDR test, as the displacement rate of loading point increases, the crack velocity increases. However, the fracture toughness is constant regardless of the change in displacement rate and the average fracture toughness is evaluated $2.07MN/m^{3/2}$. For the RLX test, the crack velocity-stress intensity factor curves are smooth and linear. The stress corrosion index estimated from the curves is 37. Comparing stress corrosion indexes in the uniaxial compression test and the DT test, there is no significant difference in these values, and they are considered to be in coincident each other regardless of testing methods. Therefore, it is concluded that stress corrosion is one of material constants of rock.

  • In this study, laboratory tests were performed to evaluate for new filling materials (ZA-Soil) for bored pile that were developed using by high calcium ash. As a result of laboratory test, the uniaxial compression strength of 2 types of ZA-Soil are shown 68.0% and 64.6% compared to ordinary portland cement. And it have a suitable flowability and environmental stability. Also, after 28days, uniaxial compression strength of material mixed with soil and high strength filling material (ZA-Soil) for bored pile is 1.10-1.23 times bigger than material mixed with ordinary portland cement.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the strength and ductility of reinforced high strength concrete columns under uniaxial load and several test variables. To do this, we have conducted tests on thirteen 20$\times$20$\times$60cm specimens with 8 and 12 longitudinal steel bars subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression. The main variables considered in this test are the configuration of ties, the space the ties, the diameter of ties and yield strength of ties. The results indicate that the strength and the ductility of reinforced high strength concrete columns have been influenced on these variables except yield strength of ties. Judging from test results, real stress of ties at peak concrete stress is suitable variable than yield strength of ties for estimation of the strength gain factor(Ks).

  • Two different strength types of plain concrete plate specimens (200$\times$200$\times$60mm) were tested under different biaxial load combinations. The specimens were subjected to biaxial combinations covering the three regions of compression-compression, compression-tension, and tension-tension. The loading platens with Teflon pads were used to reduce a confining effect in boundary surface between the concrete specimen and the solid platen. The principal deformations in the specimens were recorded, and the failure modes along with each stress ratio were examined. Based on the strength data, the failure envelops were developed for each type of plain concrete. The biaxial stress-strain responses of concrete plate specimens for three biaxial loading regions were also plotted. The test data indicated that the strength of concrete under biaxial compression ($f_2 / f_1$$_1$=-1/-1) is about 17 percent larger than under uniaxial compression.

  • Graphite is commonly used for rocket nozzle. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate compression fracture behavior of ATJ graphite. Uniaxial compression test is conducted in accordance with ASTM C 695 in the range of R.T to $900^{\circ}C$. The size effects of specimen on the compressive strength and fracture behavior were investigated. Two types of cylindrical specimen, i.e., where the diameter to length ratio is 1:2 (ASTM C 695 specimen) or 1:1, were tested at room temperature.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and postbuckling responses and the progressive failure of square symmetric laminates with rectangular cutouts under uniaxial compression. A detailed investigation is made to show the effects of cutout size and cutout aspect ratio on prebuckling and postbuckling responses, failure loads and failure characteristics of $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$, $(+45/-45)_{4s}$ and $(0/90)_{4s}$ laminates. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. In addition, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling load, failure loads, failure modes and maximum transverse deflection for a $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ laminate with and without cutout have also been presented. It is concluded that square laminates with small square cutouts have more postbuckling strength than without cutout, irrespective of boundary conditions.

  • In this study, to propose simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island using uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength, the estimated values of cohesion and internal friction angle from triaxial and uniaxial compression tests and Brazilian tests were compared in terms of estimation accuracy. This study proposed simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle using the uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island. According to the findings, among the proposed simplified methods, the method using uniaxil compressive strength was most desirable to accurately estimate the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic intact rocks in Jeju Island.

  • This paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of light-weighted soils (LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged clays and cement by using both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. The mechanical characteristics of the compressive strength of LWS are analysed with varying initial water contents of dredged clays, EPS ratio, cement ratio, and curing stress. In the triaxial compression state, it is found that the compressive strength of LWS containing EPS is independent on the effective confined stress. As the EPS ratio decreases($A_E$<2%) and cement ratio increases($A_c$>2%), the behavior characteristics of triaxial compressive strength-strain relationship is similar to that of cemented soil which decreases rapidly in compressive strength after ultimate compressive strength. For the applications of LWS to ground improvements which require the compressive strength of up to 200kPa, the optimized EPS ratio and initial water content of dredged clay are estimated to be 3~4% and 165~175%, respectively. Also, the ultimate compressive strength under both triaxial test and uniaxial compression states are almost constant for a cement ratio of up to 2% and then critical cement ratio of this LWS shall be 2%.

  • The Porous pavement gains popularity because of several benefits. It is to minimize hydro-planning condition, spraying condition, and splash to increase friction resistance, and decrease noise. Also, other studies showed that it is important to have appropriate porosity to reduce noise and water flush. The purpose of this study is an evaluation on the mechanical properties of asphalt pavements for surface course. In this study the specimen was manufactured using the Gyratory compactor in order to compact the strengthened surface course that involved the two-layer pavement. This study is conducted by using Marshall stability test(KS F 2377), Impact resonance test, Schmidt hammer test(KS F 2730), and the Uniaxial compression test(KS F 2314). Using the Uniaxial compression test and Schmidt hammer test, the values of compressive strength and bearing capacity were measured, and the modulus of elasticity for each specimen was respectively measured using the Uniaxial compression test, Impact Resonance test.
