Recently, the need for various underwater application systems targeting efficient resource exploration and aquatic ecosystem monitoring is rapidly increasing in littoral sea and inland waters. In this paper, we focus on the research and development of digital module of acoustic micro modem which can be used for underwater mobile communication systems and underwater sensor network systems. Specifically, a digital module of acoustic modem embedding digital signal processor is designed and implemented. On top of the developed hardware platform, physical layer frame generation and recovery and channel coding algorithms are mounted and tested in a water tank and a pond to verify its functionality and performance. According to experimental results, less than 1 percent of total computational power is consumed in the processing of frame control and convolutional code with the data rate of 1 kbps. Thus, the performance of micro modem could be improved by loading efficient baseband algorithms into the processor while maintaining the implemented hardware.

In the RTLS(Real Time Location Based System), in case of existing a number of moving target, extremely complecated data flow is can be occurred. In the network where single gateway exists, various data which was collected from sensor node is transmitted along the simple route as time goes by. In case of multi-gateway configuration, the collected data is transmitted through diverse routes rather than simple route. This kind of data causes jams on nodes and this brings down the performance of the network. Different from existing studies, in this thesis, MAC (Media Access Control) protocol which minimizes data collision between nodes and guarantees QoS(Quality of Service) is suggested, in order to communicate efficiently in multi-gateway underwater sensor network environment. In the suggested protocol, source node which wants to transmit data makes a channel reservation to a number of destination node using a RTS packet. Source node reserves a channel without collision, by scheduling CTS response time using expected delay information from neighbor nodes. Once the reservation is made, source node transmit data packet without collision. This protocol analyzes/estimates the performance compared to a method provided from existing studies via simulation. As a results of the analysis, it was comfirmed that the suggested method has better performance, such as efficiency and delay.
Multiuser communication has been an important research area of underwater acoustic communications and networking. This paper studies the use of adaptive orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) in a downlink scenario, where a central node sends data to multiple distributed nodes simultaneously. In practical implementations, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) cannot be perfectly known by the central node in time-varying underwater acoustic (UWA) channels, due to the long propagation delays resulting from the low sound speed. In this paper, we explore the CSI feedback for resource allocation. An adaptive power-bit loading algorithm is presented, which assigns subcarriers to different users and allocates power and bits to each subcarrier, aiming to minimize the bit error rate (BER) under power and throughput constraints. Simulation results show considerable performance gains due to adaptive subcarrier allocation and further improvement through power and bit loading, as compared to the non-adaptive interleave subcarrier allocation scheme. In a lake experiment, channel feedback reduction is implemented through subcarrier clustering and uniform quantization. Although the performance gains are not as large as expected, experiment results confirm that adaptive subcarrier allocation schemes based on delayed channel feedback or long term statistics outperform the interleave subcarrier allocation scheme.

Until now, water pollution environmental monitoring system has been used at to acquire and measure data for streams and rivers. Recently coastal and marine environment monitoring system is becoming most important and urgent thing. The realtime automatic coastal and marine environment monitoring system using CDMA data transmission technique is developed in this study. The Embedded field server is designed and developed to acquire and measure underwater environment information such as pH, DO, water temperature using the water quality sensor. The obtained data is sent to the server via CDMA modem connected to the embedded field server and stored in database. Our purpose is to provide and monitor underwater environment information with CDMA communication in coastal areas.
In underwater signal processing, separating individual signals from mixed signals has long been a challenge due to low signal quality. The common method using Short-time Fourier transform for spectrogram analysis has faced criticism for its complex parameter optimization and loss of phase data. We propose a Triple-path Recurrent Neural Network, based on the Dual-path Recurrent Neural Network's success in long time series signal processing, to handle three-dimensional tensors from multi-channel sensor input signals. By dividing input signals into short chunks and creating a 3D tensor, the method accounts for relationships within and between chunks and channels, enabling local and global feature learning. The proposed technique demonstrates improved Root Mean Square Error and Scale Invariant Signal to Noise Ratio compared to the existing method.

The 2-dimensional arrangement method of nodes has been used in most of RF (Radio Frequency) based communication network simulations. However, this method is not useful for the an none-obstacle 3-dimensional space networks in which the propagation delay speed in communication is very slow and, moreover, the values of performance factors such as the communication speed and the error rate change on the depth of node. Such a typical example is an underwater communication network. The 2-dimensional arrangement method is also not useful for the RF based network like some WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks), IBSs (Intelligent Building Systems), or smart homes, in which the distance between nodes is short or some of nodes can be arranged overlapping with their different heights in similar planar location. In such cases, the 2-dimensional network simulation results are highly inaccurate and unbelievable so that they lead to user's erroneous predictions and judgments. For these reasons, in this paper, we propose a method to place uniformly and randomly communication nodes in 3-dimensional network space, making the wireless link with neighbor node possible. In this method, based on the communication rage of the node, blocks are generated to construct the 3-dimensional network and a node per one block is generated and placed within a block area. In this paper, we also introduce an algorithm based on this method and we show the performance results and evaluations on the average time in a node generation and arrangement, and the arrangement time and scatter-plotted visualization time of all nodes according to the number of them. In addition, comparison with previous studies is conducted. As a result of evaluating the performance of the algorithm, it was found that the processing time of the algorithm was proportional to the number of nodes to be created, and the average generation time of one node was between 0.238 and 0.28 us. ultimately, There is no problem even if a simulation network with a large number of nodes is created, so it can be sufficiently introduced at the time of simulation.

We introduce status and prospect of increasingly utilizing, unmanned, global ocean observing systems, and the global network to integrate, coordinate, and manage the systems. Platforms of the ocean observing system are diversified in order to resolve/monitor the variability occurring at multiple scales in both three-dimensional space and time. Here purpose, development history, and current status of the systems in two kinds - mobile (surface drifter, subsurface float, underwater glider) and fixed platforms (surface and subsurface moorings, bottom mounts), are examined and the increased future uses to produce synergies are envisioned. Simultaneous use of various mobile and fixed platforms is suggested to more effectively design the observing system, with an example of the NSF-funded OOI (Ocean Observations Initiative) program. Efforts are suggested 1) to fill the data gap existing in the deep sea and the Southern Ocean, and toward 2) new global network for oceanic boundary currents, 3) new technologies for existing and new sensors including biogeochemical, acoustic, and optical sensors, 3) data standardization, and 4) sensor calibration and data quality control.
