Positional cloning (map-based cloning) of mutations or genetic variations has been served as an invaluable tool to understand in-vivo functions of genes and to identify molecular components underlying phenotypes of interest. Mice homozygous for the cerebellar deficient folia (cdf) mutation are ataxic, with cerebellar hypoplasia and abnormal lobulation of the cerebellum. In the cdf mutant cerebellum approximately 40% of Purkinje cells are ectopically located within the white matter and the inner granule cell layer (IGL). To identify the cdf gene, a high-resolution genetic map for the cdf-gene-encompassing region was constructed using 1997 F2 mice generated from C3H/HeSnJ-cdf/cdf and CAST/Ei intercross. The cdf gene showed complete linkage disequilibrium with three tightly linked markers D6Mit208, D6Mit359, and D6Mit225. A contig using YAC, BAC, and P1 clones was constructed for the cdf critical region to identify the gene. A deletion in the cdf critical region on chromosome 6 that removes approximately 150kb of DNA was identified. A gene associated with this deletion was identified using cDNA selection. cdf mutant mice with the transgenic copy of the identified gene restored the brain abnormalities of the mutant mice. The positional cloning of cdf gene provides a good example showing the identification of a gene could lead to finding a new component of important molecular pathways.
A poodle with clinical signs of colorectal disease was diagnosed as pneumatosis coli. In this dog, hypoadrenocorticism and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia concurred. Pneumatosis coli is one of the emphysematous gastrointestinal diseases. The etiology is unknown but mechanical, pulmonary and bacterial theories have been proposed. In pneumatosis coli, gas accumulates within submucosal or subserosal layer of colon or rectum, so intramural radiolucent gas is observed on abdominal radiographs. In this dog, intramural gas accumulation occurred in cecum. Definitive diagnosis was based on radiographic findings and an underlying cause was not elicited. Pneumatosis coli should be included into differential diagnosis for nonspecific colorectal signs.

This paper proposes a Voice Activity Detection (VAD) algorithm based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) network using dual threshold. The k-means clustering and Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm are used to upade the RBF network to the underlying speech condition. The inputs for RBF are the three parameters in a Code Exited Linear Prediction (CELP) coder, which works stably under various background noise levels. Dual hangover threshold applies in BRF-VAD for reducing error, because threshold value has trade off effect in VAD decision. The experimental result show that the proposed VAD algorithm achieves better performance than G.729 Annex B at any noise level.

In this paper, we proposed a new architecture called radial basis function-based polynomial neural networks classifier that consists of heterogeneous neural networks such as radial basis function neural networks and polynomial neural networks. The underlying architecture of the proposed model equals to polynomial neural networks(PNNs) while polynomial neurons in PNNs are composed of Fuzzy-c means-based radial basis function neural networks(FCM-based RBFNNs) instead of the conventional polynomial function. We consider PNNs to find the optimal local models and use RBFNNs to cover the high dimensionality problems. Also, in the hidden layer of RBFNNs, FCM algorithm is used to produce some clusters based on the similarity of given dataset. The proposed model depends on some parameters such as the number of input variables in PNNs, the number of clusters and fuzzification coefficient in FCM and polynomial type in RBFNNs. A multiobjective particle swarm optimization using crowding distance (MoPSO-CD) is exploited in order to carry out both structural and parametric optimization of the proposed networks. MoPSO is introduced for not only the performance of model but also complexity and interpretability. The usefulness of the proposed model as a classifier is evaluated with the aid of some benchmark datasets such as iris and liver.
We present a finite difference solution for electrokinetic flow in rectangular microchannels encompassing Navier's fluid slip phenomena. The externally applied body force originated from between the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann field around the channel wall and the flow-induced electric field is employed in the equation of motion. The basic principle of net current conservation is applied in the ion transport. The effects of the slip length and the long-range repulsion upon the velocity profile are examined in conjunction with the friction factor. It is evident that the fluid slip counteracts the effect by the electric double layer and induces a larger flow rate. Particle streak imaging by fluorescent microscope and the data processing method developed ourselves are applied to straight channel designed to allow for flow visualization of dilute latex colloids underlying the condition of simple fluid. The reliability of the velocity profile determined by the flow imaging is justified by comparing with the finite difference solution. We recognized the behavior of fluid slip in velocity profiles at the hydrophobic surface of polydimethylsiloxane wall, from which the slip length was evaluated for different conditions.
Recent studies have shown that probiotics have health-promoting effects, particularly intestinal immune modulation. In this study, we focused on the immunomodulatory properties of Latilactobacillus curvatus BYB3, formerly called Lactobacillus curvatus, isolated from kimchi. In a mouse model of 14-day dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, treatment with L. curvatus BYB3 significantly decreased the disease activity index, colon length, and weight loss. Moreover, histological analyses showed that L. curvatus BYB3 protected the structural integrity of the intestinal epithelial layer and mucin-secreting goblet cells from DSS-induced damage, with only slight infiltration by immune cells. To evaluate the molecular mechanisms underlying L. curvatus BYB3-driven inhibition of interleukin 6 production, possible in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of L. curvatus BYB3 were examined in the same mouse model. In addition, significantly lower levels of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 upregulation were seen in the DSS+BYB3 group (compared to that in the DSS group). These results indicate that L. curvatus BYB3 exhibits health-promoting effects via immune modulation; and therefore, it can be used to treat various inflammatory diseases.
With the advantages of high permeability and strength, pervious concrete piles can be suitable for ground improvement with high water content and low bearing capacity. By comparing the strength and permeability of pervious concrete with different aggregate sizes (3-5 mm and 4-6 mm) and porosities (20%, 25%, 30% and 35%), the recommended aggregate size (3-5 mm) and porosity (30%) can be achieved. The model tests of the pervious concrete piles in soft soil (silt and clay) foundations were conducted to evaluate the bearing characteristics, results show that, for the higher consolidation efficiency of the silty foundation, the bearing capacity of the silty foundation is 16% higher, and the pile-soil stress ratio is smaller. But when it is the ultimate load for the piles, they will penetrate into the underlying layer, which reduces the pile-soil stress ratios. With higher skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation, the pile penetration is smaller, so the decrease of the pile axial force can be less. For the difference in consolidation efficiency, the skin friction of pile in silt is more affected by the effective stress of soil, while the skin friction of pile in clay is more affected by the lateral stress. When the load reaches 4400 N, the skin friction of the pile in the silty foundation is about 35% higher than that of the clay foundation.
Vertical electrical sounding and 2D electrical resistivity survey were applied for evaluating the characteristics of alluvial layers at a groundwater artificial recharge site. The fine particles in alluvial layer, main target layer of groundwater artificial recharge, may cause clogging phenomena. In this case, electrical resistivity method is an effective technique to verify the spatial distribution of low-resistivity layers, such as saturated silts and clays. On the other hand, much attention should be paid to interpret the resistivity data in unconsolidated layers, because thick clayey overburden sometimes produces a masking effect on underlying interbedded resistive sands and gravels. Considering these points, we designed 35 points arranged in a grid form for vertical electrical sounding and 10 lines for 2D electrical resistivity survey, and concentrated our effort on enhancing the vertical and horizontal resolution of resistivity images. According to the results, 15 meters thick layers consisting of sands and gravels are located in 30 meters below ground. And the spatial distribution of silts and clays are mapped, which may cause clogging. Consequently, this approach can contribute to design and determine the location and depth of injection and observation wells for groundwater artificial recharge.

In Japan, more than 80 % of soybean growing area is converted fields and excess water is one of the major problems in soybean production. For example, recent study (Yoshifuji et al., 2016) suggested that in the fields of shallow groundwater level (GWL) (< 1m depth), rising GWL even in a short period (e.g. 1 day) causes inhibition of soybean growth. Thus it becomes more and more important to predict GWL and soil moisture in detail. In addition to conventional surface drainage and underdrain, FOEAS (Farm Oriented Enhancing Aquatic System), which is expected to control GWL in fields adequately, has been developed recently. In this study we attempted to predict GWL and soil moisture condition at the converted field with FOEAS in Biwa lake reclamation area, Shiga prefecture, near the center of the main island of Japan. Two dimensional HYDRUS model (Simuinek et al., 1999) based on common Richards' equation, was used for the calculation of soil water movement. The calculation domain was considered to be 10 and 5 meter in horizontal and vertical direction, respectively, with two layers, i.e. 20cm-thick of plowed layer and underlying subsoil layer. The center of main underdrain (10 cm in diameter) was assumed to be 5 meter from the both ends of the domain and 10-60cm depth from the surface in accordance with the field experiment. The hydraulic parameters of the soil was estimated with the digital soil map in "Soil information web viewer" and Agricultural soil-profile physical properties database, Japan (SolphyJ) (Kato and Nishimura, 2016). Hourly rainfall depth and daily potential evapo-transpiration rate data were given as the upper boundary condition (B.C.). For the bottom B.C., constant upward flux, which meant the inflow flux to the field from outside, was given. Seepage face condition was employed for the surrounding of the underdrain. Initial condition was employed as GWL=60cm. Then we compared the simulated and observed results of volumetric water content at depth of 15cm and GWL. While the model described the variation of GWL well, it tended to overestimate the soil moisture through the growing period. Judging from the field condition, and observed data of soil moisture and GWL, consideration of soil structure (e.g. cracks and clods) in determination of soil hydraulic parameters at the plowed layer may improve the simulation results of soil moisture.

Inference process generates additional triples from knowledge represented in RDF triples of semantic web technology. Tens of million of triples as an initial big data and the additionally inferred triples become a knowledge base for applications such as QA(question&answer) system. The inference engine requires more computing resources to process the triples generated while inferencing. The additional computing resources supplied by underlying resource pool in cloud computing can shorten the execution time. This paper addresses an algorithm to allocate the number of computing nodes "elastically" at runtime on Hadoop, depending on the size of knowledge data fed. The model proposed in this paper is composed of the layered architecture: the top layer for applications, the middle layer for distributed parallel inference engine to process the triples, and lower layer for elastic Hadoop and server visualization. System algorithms and test data are analyzed and discussed in this paper. The model hast the benefit that rich legacy Hadoop applications can be run faster on this system without any modification.
