Mine reclamation project is closely related to human's past mining activities and the current human's living environment. It is a reason for the national management. In order to efficiently carry out mine reclamation projects, a precise investigation and analysis of the underground space of the abandoned mine is required. Korea MINE RECLAMATION Corp. is developing a practical technology that is effective in investigating and actually measuring underground cavities. MIRECO EYE system is an exploration equipment for 3D digitization and figuration of underground cavities. As combining a laser, sonar and image acquisition technology, it enables access to information about inaccessible underground cavities and effective management of subsidence risk of mined area. and currently it is also utilized for various purposes in related areas such as investigating urban sinkholes. This article is precise numerical and geometric information analysis obtained through MIRECO EYE system.

Background: Work comfort studies have been extensively conducted, especially in the underground and meteorological fields resulting in an avalanche of recommendations for their evaluation. Nevertheless, no known or universally accepted model for comprehensively assessing the thermal work condition of the underground mine environment is currently available. Current literature presents several methods and techniques, but none of these can expansively assess the underground mine environment since most methods consider only one or a few defined factors and neglect others. Some are specifically formulated for the built and meteorological climates, thus making them unsuitable to accurately assess the climatic conditions in underground development and production workings. Methods: This paper presents a series of sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of environmental parameters and metabolic rate on the thermal comfort for underground mining applications. An approach was developed in the form of a "comfort model" which applied comfort parameters to extensively assess the climatic conditions in the deep, hot, and humid underground mines. Results: Simulation analysis predicted comfort limits in the form of required sweat rate and maximum skin wettedness. Tolerable worker exposure times to minimize thermal strain due to dehydration are predicted. Conclusion: The analysis determined the optimal air velocity for thermal comfort to be 1.5 m/s. The results also identified humidity to contribute more to deviations from thermal comfort than other comfort parameters. It is expected that this new approach will significantly help in managing heat stress issues in underground mines and thus improve productivity, safety, and health.
Recently, mining facilities have being installed in an underground space according to a social demand for environment-friendly mine development. The underground structures for mining facilities usually requires a large volume of space with width greater than height, and thus the stability assessment of the large-scale underground mine structure is an important issue. In this study, we analysed a factor of safety based on strength reduction method, and proposed a numerical design approach to determining the dimension of underground mine structures in combination with a strength reduction method and a multivariate regression analysis. Input design parameters considered in the present study were the stress ratio and shear strength of rock mass, and the width and cover depth of underground mine structures. The stabilities of underground mine structures were assessed in terms of factor of safety under different conditions of the above input parameters. It was calculated by the strength reduction method, and several kinds of fit functions were obtained through various multivariate regression analyses. Using a best-fit regression model, we proposed the charts which provide preliminary design information on the dimension of underground mine structures.

This study was carried out to apprehend the variation of quality of mine drainage in the abandoned Samtan coal mine. After closure of coal mine, although still pumping, water level in underground was raised to loom and the concentration of some elements such as Fe and Mn was elevated. At present, the worst pollution source in this area is too the acidic leachate drained from uncovered mine waste impoundment. The flow rate of mine drainage from the adit is ave. about 20,000t/d. If water were flooded and deteriorated due to stopping pumping, the impact of the mine drainage on the stream around the abandoned mine would be more severe. Therefore, It is considered that the prediction of water quality of mine drainage from the adit after stopping pumping will be very important with a view to establishing countermeasures.

In recent years, as safety management in underground mines has become more important in the worldwide, mine safety management technologies combining information communication technology such as real-time worker position tracking, monitoring system and equipment remote control have been developed. Wireless communication system is mainly applied to these technologies for the flexibility of network configuration. There are some cases the monitoring system was installed in domestic underground mines, but, it is necessary to develop the technology more suitable for domestic mining standard. In this study, we developed the real-time environmental monitoring system using ZigBee technology and examined the result of application to domestic limestone mine. Furthermore, applicability of the developed environment monitoring system to $VentSim^{TM}$ LiveView was checked. This study is expected to contribute to the related studies like the optimization of the ventilation system in underground mines.
In this study, the applicability of the microseismic monitoring system based on the underground mine communication system has been verified by operation test in the domestic underground mine. The microseismic data consists of wavelet data and meta-data for mine safety management, and both data should be transferred, stored, analyzed and managed with proper method according to the purpose and size of each data. In order to select the optimal communication system for the microseismic monitoring system considering the underground environment as well as properties of data, various types of communication system have been tested and compared during operation test after installing the optical cable communication system, 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz wireless communication system through the underground mine tunnel and overground area of the test site. The integrated microseismic monitoring software, which was developed to secure the stability of data management and ease of use, has been updated according to findings from operation test. Through the operation test of the microseismic monitoring system including the communication system and the monitoring software, the technical basis was established corresponding to various requirements of the domestic mine for adoption of the microseismic monitoring system.
Exposure to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) potentially causes adverse health effects (e.g. respiratory symptoms, lung cancer). Due to a lack of data on Elemental Carbon (EC) exposure levels in underground copper ore mining (unlike other underground mining industries such as non-metallic and coal mining), this case study aims to provide individual miners' EC exposure levels, and information on their work practices including use of personal protective equipment. EC measurement was carried out during different work activities (i.e. drilling, driving a loader, plant fitting, plant operation, driving a Specialized Mining Vehicle (SMV)) as per NIOSH Method 5040. The copper miners were working 10 h/day and 5 days/week. This study found that the most significant exposures to EC were reported from driving a loader (range $0.02-0.42mg/m^3$). Even though there were control systems (i.e. water tanks and DPM filters) on the diesel vehicles, around 49.5% of the results were over the adjusted recommendable exposure limit ($0.078mg/m^3$). This was probably due to: (1) driver's frequently getting in and out of the diesel vehicles and opening the windows of the diesel vehicles, and (2) inappropriate maintenance of the diesel vehicles and the DPM control systems. The use of the P2 type respirator provided was less than 19.2%. However, there was no significant difference between the day shift results and the night shift results. In order to prevent or minimize exposure to EC in the copper ore mine, it is recommended that the miners are educated in the need to wear the appropriate respirator provided during their work shifts, and to maintain the diesel engine and emission control systems on a regular basis. Consideration should be given to a specific examination of the diesel vehicles' air-conditioning filters and the air ventilation system to control excessive airborne contaminants in the underground copper mine.

As Limestone mines have been operated with various environmental, societal and managemental problems depending on their characteristics and developing methods, many great efforts have been applied to solve these problems. Installing the mining facilities underground is one of the successful efforts to keep the sustainable limestone mine development. This effort could reduce these problems. However, unfortunately it made an side effect of constructing a large underground space in mining site. Moreover, this space caused a necessity of various disaster managements for the safety of workers and facilities. This study introduces the priority list of a limestone mining process if there are disasters in underground mining site. This result is coming from the risk assessment and business impact analysis on survey data which were obtained from the miners of that particular limestone mine. According to the result, the highest risk is 'disregard of safety guidelines in crushing & classifier process'. The result also shows the highest priority business, above all things, is 'a pit linked work of in & out process'.
Researches were carried out to investigate the characteristics and concentration of heavy metal elements of stream water through Dongmyoung abandoned metal mine and soil adjacent to the mine. The pH range of water was 5.9∼7.1 that implies the water environment was acidic to neutral. The contents and distribution aspects of heavy metals in water samples varied with geochemical characteristics of element, but the concentration of heavy metals has the tendency of increase closer to the mine in general. The results of soil analysis show that total heavy metal concentration of agricultural soil near mine was far lower than those of ore tailing and dumping site. Therefore, the effects of the abandoned mine on stream water and agricultural products were supposed to be insignificant, particularly because the portion of absorbed carbonates and reducible fractions among total heavy metal concentration was relatively lower than the other. Since, however total heavy metal concentrations of mining site were relatively higher than those of adjacent region, there is a possibility of heavy metal difussion when the chemical environment of the site changes due to migration of surface and underground water. It is suggested that the preventive measures for water and soil pollution by the heavy metals would be considered around the region.

As more diesel engines have been employed in underground limestone mines with large cross section, underground space environment is worsened by diesel exhausts and heat flow. This paper aims for the ultimate goal to optimize the work place environment through assuring the optimal required ventilation rate based on the analysis of the airflow, diesel exhaust gas concentrations and the effects of mechanization and deepening working face on temperature and humidity. Due to the insufficient capacity of the main exhaust fan and poor airway management, stagnant airflows were observed at various locations, while the flow direction was reversed instantly with passing diesel equipment and the flow reversal was also made by the seasonal variation of the outside surface weather. During the loading operation, CO concentration measurements were found to be frequently higher than the threshold limit of 50 ppm, and most of the $NO_2$ measurements during drilling and loading operations shows even more serious levels surpassing the permissible limit of 3 ppm. The actual ventilation quantity was considerably less than the required quantity estimated by the mine health and safety law, and this shortage problem was less serious in colder winter showing more effectiveness of the natural ventilation.
