  • The stresses acting on shotcrete lining of tunnel have been measured virtually by monitoring instruments installed during construction. However, the malfunction of instrument and the lack of consistency of signal have always been controversial, but re-installation of instrument after construction of tunnel lining is practically impossible. Therefore, authors have carried out the study to develop a new technique for estimating the stress acting on shotcrete lining during and after construction. In the technique, stresses of shotcrete lining can be estimate by the measurement of deformation of free face. Therefore, the relationships between the stresses of shotcrete lining and deformation of free surface are indispensable factor. In this paper, the parametric study using 2D FEM analysis was carried out to estimate the relationships between the stress level acting on the tunnel shotcrete lining and the deformation near the free face (e.g. artificial crack in this study). The distribution of stresses of shotcrete lining is also investigated in this study as the preliminary investigation for the large-scale tunnel lining test and detailed 3D FEM analysis.

  • The most widely accepted method for understanding the deformation mechanism of rock is from the use of computer simulation. However, if the changes in rock properties after excavation are significant this will prevent the computer simulation kent predicting the deformation with acceptable accuracy. If the deformations are, however, carefully measured in situ, the resulting data can be more useful far predicting the deformational behavior of underground openings, since the effect of the parameters which influence the deformational behavior are included in the measurement. In this study, extensive data analyses were carried out using the deformation measurements from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), which is a permanent nuclear waste repository The results from computer simulations were compared with field measurements to evaluate the assumptions used in the computer simulations, For better description of the deformational behavior around underground excavations, several techniques were developed, namely: (a) the calculation of the zero strain boundary; (b) the evaluation of the influence of adjacent excavations on the deformational behavior of pre-excavated openings; (c) the description of the deformational behavior using in situ measurements; (d) the calculation of the shear stress distribution; and (e) the application of a Neural Network for the prediction of opening deformation.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of safety evaluation about the ventilation system (according to the structure of confined room, the position and size of vent window, the amount of blowing air, e.t.c.), which is equipped in one of KOGAS underground valve stations. Particularly, the effect of the fans placed in the upper region was focused in detail. Numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the features of flow pattern and the diffusion of natural gas concentration. This work examined the ventilation system and resulted in proposing an optimal design of ventilation system.

  • The bedding plane has a significant influence on the effect of blasting fragmentation and the overall performance of underground mining. This paper explores the effects of fragmentation of the bedding plane and different angles by using the numerical analysis. ANSYS/LS-DYNA code was used for the implementation of the models. The models include a dynamic compressive and tensile failure which is applied to simulate the fractures generated by the explosion. Firstly, the cracks propagation with the non-bedding plane in the coal with two boreholes detonated simultaneously is calculated and the particle velocity and maximum principal stress at different points from the borehole are also discussed. Secondly, different delay times between the two boreholes are calculated to explore its effects on the propagation of the fractures. The results indicate that the coal around the right borehole is broken more fully and the range of the cracks propagation expanded with the delay time increases. The peak particle velocity decreases first and then increases with the distance from the right borehole increasing. Thirdly, different angles between the bedding plane and the centerline of the two boreholes and the transmission coefficient of stress wave at a bedding plane are considered. The results indicated that with the angles increase, the number of the fractures decreases while the transmission coefficient increases.

  • This investigation presented conventional triaxial and creep-permeability tests on sandstones considering thermally-induced damage (TID). The TID had no visible effects on rock surface color, effective porosity and permeability below $300^{\circ}C$ TID level. The permeability enlarged approximately two orders of magnitude as TID increased to $1000^{\circ}C$ level. TID of $700^{\circ}C$ level was a threshold where the influence of TID on the normalized mass and volume of the specimen can be divided into two linear phases. Moreover, no prominent variations in the deformation moduli and peak strength and strain appeared as TID< $500^{\circ}C$ level. It is interesting that the peak strength increased by 24.3% at $700^{\circ}C$ level but decreased by 11.5% at $1000^{\circ}C$ level. The time-related deformation and steady-state creep rate had positive correlations with creep loading and the TID level, whereas the instantaneous modulus showed the opposite. The strain rates under creep failure stresses raised 1-4 orders of magnitude than those at low-stress levels. The permeability was not only dependent on the TID level but also dependent on creep deformation. The TID resulted in large deformation and complexity of failure pattern for the sandstone.

  • This study assessed the levels of water qualities and microbials contamination of inland olive flounder farms in Jeju in the summers from 2015 to 2017. Three farms (A-C) located in a concentrated area using mixing coastal seawater and underground seawater and one farm (D) located in an independent area using only coastal seawater were selected. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) reached a maximum of 0.898 ± 1.024 mg/L as N in the coastal seawater of A-C, which was close to the limit of the water quality management goal of the fish farm. TAN in the influent from A-C was up to three times higher than that of D, so that the discharged water did not spread to a wide range area along the coast and continued to affect the influent. TAN of the effluent in A-C increased by 2.7-4.6 times compared to the influent, resulting in serious self-pollution in the flounder farm. Heterotrophic marine bacteria in the influent of A-C was about 600 times higher than D, and the discharge of A-C was increased by about 30 times compared to the influent.

  • A quarry with 105 m height large cut slope was analyzed. Beside RMR and SMR methods, FLAC2D were adopted to analyze slope stability. As a result, slope of andesite had a possibility of failure. Wet slope showed low safety factor. Soil nailing was recommended to solve it. Since safety factor of slope largely depend on underground level, investigation for it seemed necessary.

  • During enlarging an existing tunnel under operation, unexpected excessive overbreaks and large cavities around the tunnel were found. It was an issue that they might influence the stability the new tunnel. The overbreaks and cavities are assumed that they were attributed to excessive blasting under the condition of insufficient ground investigation. To enlarge the existing tunnel safely, therefore, a remedy measure for the overbreaks and cavities is suggested.

  • The utility of soil-gas surveys is directly proportional to their accuracy in reflecting and representing changes in the subsurface concentrations of source compounds. Passive soil-gas vapor-phase is merely a fractional trace of the source, so, as a matter of convenience, the units used in reporting detection values from EMFLUX surveys are smaller than those employed for source-compound concentrations. According to the Leaking Underground Storage Tank(LUST) Program Annual Report, approximately 16 U.S. million dollars were spent for environmental site investigations at over 1,600 Underground Storage Tank(UST) sites and approximately over 1,000 acres of land was characterized and remediated in the State of Illinois in the year of 2003 alone. The main purpose of this study is to propose an idea to significantly reduce the site investigation cost by utilizing a passive soil-gas survey and conventional intrusive drilling method and to fully define the three dimensional characteristics of subsurface contamination from two industrial drycleaning facilities.

  • The purpose of this investigation is to find the optimum values of the steel ratio, the effective depth, and the width of band for an economical design of the underground parking place by SB(slab-band) System. To simplify the optimization procedure, the final optimum ultimate strength design of SB system is obtained by combining the optimum design of each of the three component parts of SB system, namely : slab, band, and marginal beam. In this paper, nonlinear optimum GINO(General Interactive Optimizer) programming used in optimization procedure is described. Example is included to illustrate the application of the algorithm presented herein.
