Silt curtains are constructed for minimizing pollution of sediment dispersion in water bodies. In spite of wide uses of the silt curtains, there are few studies for analyzing the effectiveness of them with respect to their dimension and hydraulic characteristics. Currently, the market of silt curtains does not provide the various dimension of them due to the limit of information regarding its effectiveness on reducing sediment pollution. In this study, a series of experiments were conducted to investigate hydraulic characteristics around the silt curtains under the different flow conditions. For this study, a silt curtain was fabricated and an open channel with 30cm of width and 40cm of depth was used. The results indicated that the silt curtain was not effective in preventing dispersion at flow velocities over 0.5m/s in real conditions. Based on the experimental results, it is required that approaching velocity should be minimized and the weight of bottom be increased in order to reduce deformation. The results of this study will provide information required to design appropriate dimension of silt curtains in various water environment such as velocity and water depths.
This study was performed to develop a long-term air pollution dispersion model based on CDM program for use in the personal computer. The model CDM.PC, developmented for use of this study, simplified the plum equation of point pollution source in a windy state and sindless state. We used the classified 8 class stability, 16 wind direction and 4 class wind speed for the computer input climatological data. The plum rise equation is applied for CONCAWE's equation above 2,000 Kcal/sec of the exhaust calorie and Moses-Carson's equation below 2,000Kcal/sec at windy state, and Brigg's equation at calm. The time required is 200 minutes for drawing the air pollution contour for treating ten stacks under the above-stated conditions. It is the weakness of using personal computer that the operation time is longer than a large-size computer. But it strength is that the personal computer is used widely. To compare the treatment results of CDM.PC with TCM, we comfirmed that the shape of $SO_2$ pollution contour is similar but the concentration distribution is quite different because of characteristics of each models. Estimated and measured $SO_2$ concentration were similar, namely, Cest/Cob ratio of CDM.PC and TCM were respectively $0.96 \pm 0.25 (mean\pmS.D)$ and $1.08\pm0.26$.

Designing an ozone contactor is complicated because the residual ozone, log C. parvum inactivation, and bromate formation should be optimized with fluctuating water quality. OCM software was developed to assist a plant designer or an operator to fulfill the sophisticated optimization required in the design or operation of a new or an existing plant. In this article, numerical simulations were carried out using the OCM software for the design of a new ozone contactor under diverse design factors (i.e., three pHs, three temperatures, low and high dispersion numbers, and four and ten cells with complete mixing) with kinetic parameters obtained from the sand-filter effluent of a water treatment plant treating water from the Paldang impoundment. The results of the simulation suggested that a high residual ozone concentration at low pH and low temperature would be challenging, and PFR-like hydrodynamics could lower the residual ozone concentration. The inactivation of C. parvum oocysts increased at a lower pH. A lower dispersion number and more cell division increased the inactivation efficiency. Bromate was instantaneously formed during the initial ozonation stage. The effluent concentration was much lower than the regulatory levels imposed by the USEPA because of the low bromide level in raw water.
The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts were prepared from conventional chloride precursors by adsorption or precipitation-deposition methods. Their activities for hydrogenation reactions of cyclohexene and acetophenone were compared with those of commercial catalysts. The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts obtained from the adsorption procedure reveal higher hydrogenation activity than commercial catalysts and the catalysts prepared by the precipitation-deposition method. Their improved performances are attributed to the decreased metal crystallite sizes of Pt or Pd formed on the active carbon support upon the adsorption of the precursors probably due to the same negative charges of the chloride precursor and the carbon support. Under the preparation conditions studied, the reduction of the supported catalysts using borohydrides in liquid phase is superior to a gas phase reduction by using hydrogen in the viewpoint of particle size, hydrogenation activity and convenience.
It was investigated that $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite powder could be optimally prepared by dispersion and reduction of Cu oxide, and suitably consolidated by employing pulse electric current sintering (PECS) process. $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ and CuO powders were used as elemental powders. In order to obtain $Al_2$O$_3$ embedded by finely and homogeneously dispersed CuO particles, the elemental powders were high energy ball milled at the rotating speed of 900 rpm, with the milling time varying up to 10 h. The milled powders were heat treated at $350^{\circ}C$ in H$_2$ atmosphere for 30 min to reduce CuO into Cu. The reduced powders were subsequently sintered by employing PECS process. The composites sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 5 min showed the relative density of above 98%. The fracture toughness of the $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite was as high as 4.9MPa.$m^{1}$2//, being 1.3 times the value of pure $Al_2$$O_3$ sintered under the same condition.
According to the requirement of Res.MSC.285(86) for natural gas-fueled engine installations in ships, pump and compressor rooms should be fitted with effective mechanical ventilation system of the under pressure type, providing a ventilation capacity of at least 30 air changes per hour. It generally considered that gas leakage is more likely from a Fueled Gas Supply System(FGS) room as compared to other places, where installed in many kind of machinery or equipments like gas supply high-pressure pipes, valves, flanges and etc. Furthermore, leaked gas may be dispersed in a short time in an enclosed space, especially a FGS room, due to high pressure. However, the present requirement in Res.MSC.285(86) just considers the ventilating capacity of air changes per hour but the capacity of leaked gas. Hence, the current requirements may not meet effectively when enforcing the new propulsion systems as marine fuel. This study is conducted for the purpose of safety evaluation about the dispersion and ventilation efficiency with estimated leakage scenario. Numerical analysis predictions as the result of this paper are explained to know the features of flow pattern and the diffusion of natural gas concentration.
Hydrodynamic condition can be used to predict particle movement within water column and the results used to optimize environmental conditions for effective site selection, setting of environmental quality standard, waste dispersion, and pathogen transfer. To predict the extent of movement of particle from land, 3D hydrodynamic model that includes particle tracking module was applied to Geoje Bay and to calibrate particle tracking model, floating buoy measurement is operated. The model results show that short time is required for particles released into system from river to be transported to the shellfish farming area. It takes about 2 days for the particles to shellfish farming area under mean flow condition. It meant Geoje Bay, especially shellfish farming area is vulnerable to anthropogenic waste from river.
Present study is mainly concerned about the idea of innovative utilization of bamboo in modern construction. Owing to its compatible mechanical properties, a beneficial effect of its use in reinforced concrete (RC) frame infills has been observed. In this investigation, finite element analyses have been performed to examine the failure pattern and stress distribution pattern through the infills of a moment resisting RC frame. To validate the pragmatic use of bamboo reinforced components as infills, earthquake loading corresponding to Nepal earthquake had been considered. The analysis have revealed that introduction of bamboo in RC frames imparts more flexibility to the structure and hence may causes a ductile failure during high magnitude earthquakes like in Nepal. A more uniform stress distribution throughout the bamboo reinforced wall panels validates the practical feasibility of using bamboo reinforced concrete wall panels as a replacement of conventional brick masonry wall panels. A more detailed analysis of the results have shown the fact that stress concentration was more on the frame components in case of frame with brick masonry, contrary to the frame with bamboo reinforced concrete wall panels, in which, major stress dispersion was through wall panels leaving frame components subjected to smaller stresses. Thus an effective contribution of bamboo in dissipation of stresses generated during devastating seismic activity have been shown by these results which can be used to concrete the feasibility of using bamboo in modern construction.
The complex nature of low flow transport and tranformation of nonconservative pollutants in natural streams with pools and riffles has been investigated using a numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a set of mass balance equations describing hydrodynamic processes (advection, dispersion, and mass exchange mechanicms in streams and in storage zones) and chemical processes (reaction or decay). In this study, a mathematical model (named "Storage-Transformation Model") has been developed to predict adequately the non-Fickian nature of mixing and transformation mechanisms for decaying substances in natural streams under low flow conditions. Comparisons between the concentration-time curves predicted usingthe proposed model and the measured stream data shows that the Storage-Transformation Model yields better agreements in the goneral shape, peak concentration and time to peak than the 1-D dispersion model. The result of this study also demonstrates the differences between transport in pool-and-riffle streams versus transport in more uniform channels. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional 1-D disperision model in predicting natural mixing and stroage processes in streams through pools and riffles.

Oral mucous membrane test using Syrian hamsters was performed to evaluate the reliability as a model system for the assessment of the potentially irritating substances intended for the mucous membranes, and to determine the irritating potential of a new emulsion-type formulated toothpaste. After test substances were implanted into the cheek pouches of hamsters with diluents (20 mg/kg) under pento-barbital sodium anesthesia, we made the comparison in irritation between emulsion-type and dispersion-type of triclosan (TCS) formulations in the range of 0.2% to 0.3%. The emulsion-type formulations using non-ionic surfactant showed less mucosal lesion than other commercial toothpastes with 0.3% TCS, or dispersion-type ones. However, no significant difference in irritation was detected between 0.2% and 0.3% TCS. We report that this hamster cheek pouch method could be a reliable approach for the evaluation slight difference in the irritating potentials of cosmetics and hygiene products intended for the lips or other mucous membranes, and this method showed that the new emulsion-type formulation significantly lowered the TCS-induced toxicity, compared with other commercial toothpastes.
