PURPOSES: To characterize the aging effect on asphalt binder, dynamic shear modulus mastercurve of two typical asphalt binders are developed. METHODS: To develop dynamic shear modulus mastercurve, dynamic shear modulus at high temperature and creep stiffness at low temperature are measured by temperature sweep test and bending beam rheometer test, respectively. RESULTS: It is observed that the aging effect on asphalt binder can be clearly observed from dynamic shear modulus mastercurve and the mastercurve can be utilized to predict behavior of asphalt binder at wide range of temperature. CONCLUSIONS: It is confirmed that SBS 5% modified binder has more desirable mechanical property at low and high temperature as a pavement material comparing to PG64-22 binder and the mastercurve is an effective tool to evaluate the property of asphalt binder.

Class-F and B resin-rich type insulating tapes are generally used for the ground wall insulations of respective air-cooled and water-cooled stator windings in larger turbine generators. In this paper, their electrical properties coupled with aging times in higher temperature than designed one in normal condition were experimentally investigated and the results of two comparative tests were presented on the existing class-F resin-rich type tape and a developed one after curing. The resin-rich tapes currently used arc composed of six and a half 3-layer sheets that arc structured with mica paper, the top and bottom supports of it respectively, and the epoxy resin to bind them tightly. The results for breakdown voltage and strength on the cured specimens were presented, which were composed of the unaged, the aged accelerated for one, two, and three thousand hours at 180 $^{\circ}C$. The surface and volume resistivities on them were measured and the results are also presented to make a comparative test for the initial electrical characteristics.

Electrical properties such as permittivity and tan$\delta$ of unaged (control) and aged (72 h at 18$0^{\circ}C$) mica/epoxy composites of 130 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were measured and their surface conditions were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Both permittivity and tan6 of control specimens were higher than those of short-time aged specimens. FTIR results show a new peak at 1710 $cm^{-1}$ / for short-time aged specimens, originating from carbonyl group formed by the oxidation reaction during the aging process. ESCA results show that the binding energy at 532.9 eV representing the singlet state of oxygen ( $O_{1s}$) decreases by 13.7%, whereas that at 534.6 eV increases by 13.7%. Glass transition temperatures of control and short-time aged specimens are observed to be 95.4$^{\circ}C$ and 113.4$^{\circ}C$, which increase with the increase of aging time. TGA results indicate that the control specimens contain a smaller amount of volatile components than the short-time aged specimens.s.
Partial discharge (PD) detection plays a major role in the life time assessment of liquid insulation in power transformers. Many research works are being carried out to replace conventional mineral oil insulation in transformers by vegetable oils. It is necessary to understand the PD characteristics of vegetable oils before recommending them as an alternate for mineral oil. In this paper, the breakdown strength and PD characteristics of palm and corn oil were investigated in both unaged and thermally aged conditions. Laboratory experiments were performed as per IEC test procedures. PD signals were measured using wide band detection system. Phase resolved PD pattern of vegetable oils and mineral oil were compared. Effect of increase in voltage stress on the PD pattern of palm and corn oil were studied. Time and frequency domain analysis of PD pulses at needle-plane electrode configuration was carried out. Statistical analysis of PD pattern i.e. skewness and shape parameter variations with respect to applied thermal stress were also carried out. From the results, it is observed that palm and corn oils have better breakdown strength and PD characteristics even under long-term thermal stress and hence they can be used for power transformer applications.
Fire protection for nuclear power plants should be designed according to the concept of "Defense in Depth" to achieve the reactor safety shutdown. This concept focuses on fire prevention, fire suppression and safe shutdown. Fire prevention is the first line of "Defense in Depth" and the licensee should establish administrative measures to minimize the potential for fire to occur. Administrative measures should include procedures to control handling and use of combustibles. Electrical cables is the major contributor of fire loads in nuclear power plants, therefore electrical cables should be fire retardant. Electrical cables installed in nuclear power plants should pass the flame test in IEEE-383 standard in accordance with NUREG-0800, "Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants". To assure the fire retardant of electrical cables during design life, both aged and unaged cable specimens should be tested in accordance with IEEE-383. It can be generally thought that the flammability of electrical cables has been increased by wearing as time passed, however the results from fire retardant tests performed in U.S.A and Korea indicate the inconsistent tendency of aging and consequential decrease in flammability. In this study, it is expected that the effective methodology for validation of fire retardant performance would be identified through the review of the results from fire retardant tests.
In the present investigation, thermal aging behavior of H-NBR/NBR blend with various H-NBR content was investigated. Mixture of dicumyl peroxide and sulfur were used as a curing agent. The influence of the thermal aging of the H-NBR/NBR blends on the solid state properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and abrasion resistance was investigated. Tensile strength was increased with increasing H-NBR content, while abrasion resistance was decreased. Both elongation at break and hardness were not affected by the addition of H-NBR. The properties such as hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break of the aged samples were lower than unaged samples. However, the rate of deterioration of those properties was decreased by increasing the H-NBR content, which indicated that improved thermal aging behavior was obtained by the addition of H-NBR. Abrasion loss was increased with increasing aging time, but it became less by the addition of H-NBR addition.

The effect of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ phase on the mechanical behavior in 7 mole% calcia partially stabilized zirconia has been studied. The $ZrO_2$ powder containg 7 mole% CaO prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method calcined at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was nearly 100% tetragonal but as the calcining temperature increased certain amount of monoclinic phase appeared. The sintered specimen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was aged at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 0, 24, 48, 72 hours. X-ray diffraction data showed that in the aged specimen monoclinic tetragonal and cubic phase coexisted. The Kc value of aged specimen for 48 hr was about 4.5MN/m3/2 much greater than unaged sample. But aged for 72 hr the KiC value was decreased. The increasing of toughness in PSZ is based on the Stress-Induced Phase Transformation that is metastable tetra-gonal $ZrO_2$ changes t stable monoclinic phase within the stress field of crack and the mechanical fracture energy absorption is occured But in this case due to certain amount of tetragonal phase transformed to monoclinic phase during cooling the microcrack effect by transformation also considered. Trerefore both Stress-Induced Phase Transformation and inclusion induced microcracking effect contrbute to the increase of fracture toughness of 7 mole% CaO-$ZrO_2$ containing monoclinic and tetragnola phase simulataneously.
Samples of active carbon of $1150\;m^2/g$ surface area were impregnated with ammoniacal salts of copper, chromium and silver, with and without triethylenediamine. The samples of impregnated carbon were aged at $50^{\circ}C$, with and without 90% RH (relative humidity), for a little more than one year and chemically evaluated periodically. Initially copper (II) and chromium (VI) reduced very fast in the samples in humid atmosphere to the extent of 30% and 60% respectively in four months. These values were found to be unaffected by the presence of triethylenediamine (TEDA) indicating that the chemical did not retard the reduction process of chromium (VI) and copper (II). However, in the absence of humidity the reduction of the impregnants was significantly less (10-12%, w/w) in four months. It was quite evident; therefore, that the moisture was mainly responsible for the reduction of chromium (VI) and copper (II) species in impregnated carbons. The prolonged ageing of the samples with and without triethylenediamme after four months with and without humid atmosphere showed that the extent of reduction of chromium (VI) was very low, i.e. 5-10% and of copper (II) was 2-25%. Silver is not reduced due to carbon, as it remained unchanged in concentration on storage. The impregnated carbon samples (100 g) without triethylenediamine, which were aged at room temperature for 5 years in absence of humidity and unaged when evaluated against cyanogen chloride (CNCl) at a concentration of 4 mg/L and airflow rate of 30 lpm showed a high degree of protection (80- 110 minutes).

The effects of thermal cycle, aging heat treatment and Boron addition on the phase transformation characteristics and mechanical properties of the shape memory alloys of Cu-Zn-Al system, which was designed to operate about $80^{\circ}C$ by this research group, were studied. From the view point of the effects of thermal cycle on the phase transformation temperature change, it was found that up to 100 cycles Ms and Af points increased by $3-7^{\circ}C$ and Mf decreased a little bit and after that all of them were remain constant, and As point was not affected. All of the phase transformation temperatures were decreased $5-7^{\circ}C$ by aging heat treatment, at $140^{\circ}C$ for 24h however the effects of thermal cycle on aged alloys were same as on unaged alloys. As the thermal cycle increased the shape memory ability decreased a little up to 20 cycles, but above that it kept almost same ability. By Boron addition, grain size was refined from $1500{\mu}m$ to about $330{\mu}m$ and the hardness, fatigue property were improved but shape memory ability was lowered.
Cast duplex stainless steels are susceptible to thermal aging during long-term service at temperatures ranging from $280^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. To analyze the effect of thermal aging on leak-before-break (LBB) behavior, three-dimensional finite element analysis models were built for circumferentially cracked pipes. Based on the elasticeplastic fracture mechanics theory, the detectable leakage crack length calculation and J-integral stability assessment diagram approach were carried out under different bending moments. The LBB curves and LBB assessment diagrams for unaged and thermally aged pipes were constructed. The results show that the detectable leakage crack length for thermally aged pipes increases with increasing bending moments, whereas the critical crack length decreases. The ligament instability line and critical crack length line for thermally aged pipes move downward and to the left, respectively, and unsafe LBB assessment results will be produced if thermal aging is not considered. If the applied bending moment is increased, the degree of safety decreases in the LBB assessment.
