Reduction in stratospheric ozone layer increases the amount of ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB: 280-320 nm) that reaches the earth ’ s surface. UVB radiationcan damage plants, resulting in decrease in growth and productivity. UVB-augmentation studies have indicated that the sensitivity to UVB radiation in plants varies among the species and cultivars. However. there are no definitive answers for the mechanisms of UVB-resistance in higher plants and for bioengineering design and development of UVB-tolerant plants. We have been studying physiological and biochemical aspects of the effects of UVB radiation on growth and yield of rice COryza sativa LJ. aiming to clarify the mechanism of resistance to UVB radiationin rice. At this meeting. weintroduce our research as followed: (1) supplementary UVB radiation has inhibitory effects on the growth. yield and grain development of rice; (2) UVB sensitivity of rice varies widely among cultivars; (3) among Japanese rice cultivars. Sasanishiki. a leading variety in northeast Japan. is more resistant to UVB. while Norin 1. a progenitor of Sasanishiki. is less resistant; (4)UV-sensitive Norin 1 cultivar is deficient in photorepair of UVB-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD). and this deficiency results from one amino acid residue alteration of CPD photolyase. These results suggest that spontaneously occurring mutation in CPD photolyase gene could lead to difference in UVB sensitivity in rice. and that CPD photolyase might be a useful target for improving UVB-sensitivity in rice by selective breeding or bioengineering of UVB-tolerant rice.
Nowadays, interests of ultraviolet(UV) protection increased, since the UV dosage on the earth surface has increased over years. Overdose of UV can cause various skin, eye, and even DNA damages. Therefore, it is need to develop a proper mean to protect human skin and eye from UV radiation. In this study, the UV protective effect of green tea extract dyed fabrics with various fiber types were examined. Green tea has an active moiety called 'catechin' having benzene rings in its structure, which would exert a proper UV protective property. Green tea dyed fabrics showed the increase in UV protection, and silk showed the highest increase in UV protection (from 52.2% to 84.5% in UV-A, from 66.1% to 90% in UV-B). The order of UV-A protection increase is silk, wool, nylon and acrylic, PET, and cotton. The order of UV-B protection increase is silk nylon, wool, acrylic, cotton, and PET. In case of silk and nylon, the UV protection property gradually increased as the concentration of green tea extract increased. As a result, it was proven that green tea extract dyeing can improve UV protection property of dyed fabrics in environment-friendly and biocompatible manners.

The human eye, constantly exposed to solar radiation, can be damaged by UV radiation. In particular, ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced damage plays an important role in retinal degeneration and cell aging. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of the methanol extract of Oxya chinensis sinuosa (OCM), an edible insect known for its high protein content (64.2%), and various pharmacological effects, on human retinal pigment epithelial cells. ARPE-19 cells were treated with OCM and subsequently UVB irradiated. Our results showed that OCM effectively attenuates UVB-induced cell damage by reducing MAPK phosphorylation (JNK and p38 MAPK). Additionally, OCM increased the phosphorylation of Akt, and cell cycle regulators, including p21 and p27, in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, OCM treatment increased ARPE-19 cell proliferation by activating the S6K1/S6 pathway. This study suggests that OCM prevents UVB-induced retinal cell damage by increasing cell proliferation via ROS reduction, suggesting its potential as a functional therapeutic superfood against retinal cell damage.
It is well known that the Petasites japonicus has been used for a long time medicine for the treatment of allergic diseases such as lacquer poisoning. However, the exact components and dyeing properties of its effects is still not known. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing property and ultraviolet-cut ability of silk and nylon fabrics that was dyed variously with the Petasites japonicus. The Petasites japonicus extract was done by boiling with distilled water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. As mordanting agent, we used Aluminum potassium sulfate ($AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$), Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate ($CuSO_5{\cdot}5H_2O$), Iron(II)Chloride ($FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$). The best K/S value of dyeing temperature and time, all the fabrics were $100^{\circ}C$, 90min. Silk fabric was dyed yellow(0.8Y 7.6/2.2) and nylon fabric was dyed reddish yellow(10.1 YR 7.4/3.0). Silk fabric and nylon fabric was changed greenish yellow on mordanting with $CuSO_5{\cdot}5H_2O$ and $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ respectively. And the colorfastness of washing and dry-cleaning was improved by using mordanting agent(4~5 grade). Ultraviolet-cut ability(UV-B) was showed more 90% in dyed nylon fabrics.
Visible injury appeared 7 days after ultraviolet-B(UV-B) irradiation, but did not show any significant decline of growth in cucumber plant. However the growth of the first leaves of fertilized plants was suppressed by UV-B irradiation. Especially the most effective growth retardiation appeared when supplied with nitrogen rather than phosphate and potassium. These results suggest that UV-B may play an important role in inhibiting nitrogen metabolism. Therefore we examined the effect of activity of nitrate reductase, and found that the nitrate reductase activity of the first leaves was increased by UV-B irradiation for 7 days and fertilization. We examined the effect of plant hormone on the inhibition of growth in the first leaves. Benzyladenine promoted the growth of discs excised from the first leaves by fertilization and without UV-B, but did not promote the growth of leaf discs from UV-B irradiated plants. We conclude that the UV-B-induced decrease in the growth of the first leaves could be related to reduction in sensitivity to plant hormones.

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) can be generated by using non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet which have profound biomedical applications [1, 2]. In this work, reactive oxygen species like hydroxyl radical (OH) are generated by using non-thermal direct plasma jet above water surface using Ar gas and their properties have been studied using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. OH radicals are found to be generated simultaneously with the discharge current with concentration of $2.7{\times}1015/cm3$ at 7mm above water surface while their persistence time have been measured to be $2.8{\mu}S$. In addition, it has been shown that plasma initiated ultraviolets play a major role to generate RONS inside water. Further works are going on to measure the temporal behavior of OH and $O2^*-$.
The optical absorption of high index glasses of the system TiO2-BaO-B2O3 prepared from the raw materials for an optical waveguide glass has been measured in the near ultraviolet region. The amount of Ti3+ in the glass could be reduced to a level less than 5 ppm by melting a batch added with pure nitric acid, using a fused quartz crucible in an oxygen gas atmosphere. The ultra-pure glass of 10mm thick prepared in such a way did not show any appreciable color even for the one containing 30 mol% TiO2 and having refractive index nD of 1.84 and Abbe's number vD of 28.8. The wavelength of ultraviolet absorptin edge was longer for the glass of higher index and higher dispersdion. The melting of a TiO2 containing glass in a platinum crucible resulted in a coloration of the glass due to the dissolved plutinum from the crucible, which was more intense for the one containing larger amount of TiO2.
Ultraviolet light(UV-C, wavelength: 200~280nm) is employed profitably for sterilizing drinking water. For most water serving apparatus such as a water purifier, a water cooler and heater, a coffee vending machine and etc., pre-sterilized water may be contaminated secondarily with bacillary inhabitation in a container before serving. In consideration of this problem, a household water tap which is equipped with a sterilization/Purification device in combination with non-contact UV-lamp, was designed to sterilize and purify water at the last outlet just before serving. Hopefully this simple but creative item may be commercialized for household and public use.

Conventional ultraviolets A,B,C are known to be very important factor of killing, changing surface properties of biological cells and materials. It is of great importance to investigate the influence of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) exposure on the biological cell. Here we have studied high density EUV plasma and its emission characteristics, which have been generated by plasma focus device with hypercycloidal pinch (HCP) electrode under various Ar gas pressures ranged from 30~500 mTorr in this experiment. We have also measured the plasma characteristics generated from the HCP plasma focus device such as electron temperature by the Boltzman plot, plasma density by the Stark broading method, discharge images by open-shuttered pin hole camera, and EUV emission signals by using the photodiode AXUV-100 Zr/C.
This paper is a part of the research into effects of increased UV-B (Ultraviolet-B, 280-320nm) upon the ecosystem of field wheat. Based on a 3-year project with intensified UV-B influencing the crop, observation and calculation were made of such factors and parameters as the morphology of a single wheat plant including its leaf area, leaf base angle and proportion of spacing between joints. The results show that the enhanced UV-B signifantly decreased wheat's SSLA, and the increased percentage of the lower LAI is associated with the change in leaf base angle and proportion of spacing between joints.
