  • Ultraviolet (UV) is widely used as a sterilizing agent in restaurants and catering facilities in Korea. Efficacy of UV sterilizers (UVS) was investigated against E. coli on the inner bottom of stainless steel cups. UV intensity on the bottom of cups varied widely with the locations of cups in UVS, showing higher values at center while lower values at outskirts. The deviations in UV intensity were remarkable on top shelf, but alleviated as proceeded to middle and bottom shelves. Inactivation of E. coli was proportional to the UV intensity and treatment time, consequently to UV dose, and showed a pseudo-first-order kinetics with tailing. Initial inactivation rate constants ($K_{1}$) deviated with the locations of the cups, while final inactivation rate constants ($K_{2}$) showed comparable values. An equation for the calculation of the proposed UV treatment time was suggested.

  • This study investigated the efficacy of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation in enhancing the quality of raw bovine milk by targeting microbial populations and lipid peroxidation, both of which are key factors in milk spoilage. We categorized the raw milk samples into three groups based on initial bacterial load: low (<3 Log 10 CFU/mL), medium (3-4 Log 10 CFU/mL), and high (>4 Log 10 CFU/mL). Using a 144 W thin-film UV-C reactor, we treated the milk with a flow rate of 3 L/min. We measured the bacterial count including standard plate count, coliform count, coagulase-negative staphylococci count, and lactic acid bacteria count and lipid peroxidation (via thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay) pre- and post-treatment. Our results show that UV-C treatment significantly reduced bacterial counts, with the most notable reductions observed in high and medium initial load samples (>4 and 3-4 Log 10 CFU/mL, respectively). The treatment was particularly effective against coliforms, showing higher reduction efficiency compared to coagulase-negative staphylococci and lactic acid bacteria. Notably, lipid peroxidation in UV-C treated milk was significantly lower than in pasteurized or untreated milk, even after 72 hours. These findings demonstrate the potential of UV-C irradiation as a pre-treatment method for raw milk, offering substantial reduction in microbial content and prevention of lipid peroxidation, thereby enhancing milk quality.

  • Rice plants, cv. Koshihikari, were subjected to the biologically effective ultraviolet-B(UV-BBE) radiation {daily dose : 0.0 (control) and 11.5 (enhanced UV-B) KJ m-2} to investigate the effect of enhanced UV-B radiation on lipid peroxidation and to determine whether carotenoids and polyamines are involved in protection mechanism against enhanced UV-B radiation. Enhanced UV-B radiation significantly depressed plant dW weight. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in rice leaves was increased by about 30% after 6 days of UV-B irradiation. Total carotenoid contents tended to slightly decrease with the UV-B irradiation, even though there was no significance. In rice leaves, 3 major polyamines, putrescine, spermidine and spermine are observed. All of the polyamine contents were increased with UV-B irradiation. The results suggest that enhanced UV- B radiation caused oxidative stress on lipids and that polyamines may serve as a biochemiral protectant against increased UV-B radiation in rice plants.

  • Many countries and researchers in the lighting field have focused on the LED light source as a solution to energy savings and environmental pollution. The LED light source consumes less power, has a long life and is highly economical. It is vibration and shock-resistant, and environment friendly as well. But LED lighting has some problems. In particular, the photobiological safety of LED light sources is emerging as an issue. Ultraviolet radiation from the LED light source emitted directly to the human body over a long period of time is harmful. In this paper, UV radiation from white LED was measured. Finally, the LED light source emits UV radiation, but it is relatively small when compared to others.

  • Ther effect of UV on the mortality rate of toxic dinoflagellate Amphidinium Carterae causing a red tide in the coastal area of korea was investigated in the batch and continuous-scale reactor equipped with ultraviolet irradiation-apparatus. Degussa P(sub)25 titanium oxide, a photocatalyst proved to be effective of the mortality of Amphidinium Carterae supplied with photocatalyst and UV radiation were greater than 95% in 2 minutes of UV radiation and the rate were higher than that by UV-radiation without titanium dioxide in the batch and continuous-flow scale reactor, The mortality time of Amphidinium Carterae increased with the cell density under UV-illumination in the batch scale reactor. The mortality rate in the density of $5.0$\times$10^4$ cell/mL at the same experimental condition was more than 90% in 4 minutes in the continuous flow scale reactor. The percentage of 99.9$\pm$0.1% of Amphidinium Carterae in the density of $0.5$\times$10^4$ cells/mL was died in 20 minutes when the phytoplankton was illuminated with UV-radiation without photocatalyst.

  • A mutant Arabidopsis thaliana which is very sensitive to Ultraviolet-B(UV-B) radiation has been isolated by ethylmethane sulfonate(EMS) mutagenesis. Genetic cross proved the UV-sensitive gene(uvs) to segregate as a single Mendelian locus. For mapping of uvs, we crossed Arabidopsis thaliana Lansberg with uvs plant(Columbia), and made F2 plants by F1 selfcross. We designed 10 kinds of CAPS marker primers. Each primers amplifies a single mapped DNA sequence from uvs and Lansberg erecta ecotyres. Also identified was at least one restriction endonuclase for each of these PCR product that generates ecotype-specific digestion pattern. We got crossing over value of UB-sensitivity and each CAPS marker which located on different chromosome arm. The value of crossing over showed that uvs was linked to LFY3 which was on chromosome 5.

  • This study was performed by the sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) to investigate the effects of Aphidicolin (APC) or 2, 4-dinitrophenoi (DNP) on cross-adaptive response to ultraviolet radiation (UV) or ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. The pretreatment with 1 J/m$^2$ UV decreased the yield of SCEs induced by subsequent treatment with 8 mM EMS in CHO cells. And the treatment with 10 $\mu$g/ml APC or 50 $\mu$M DNP during incubation after pretreatment with 1 J/m$^2$ UV increased the yield of SCEs induced by 8 mM EMS. The pretreatment with 2 mM EMS decreased the yield of SCEs induced by subsequent treatment with 5 J/m$^2$ UV. The treatment with 10 $\mu$g/ml APC during incubation after 2 mM EMS increased the yield of SCEs induced by 5 J/m$^2$ UV. These results suggest that APC and DNP inhibit cross-adaptive response to pretreatment with UV and subsequent treatment with EMS, and also cross-adaptive response to pretreatment with EMS and subsequent treatment with UV is inhibited by APC in CHO cells.

  • Recently, one of the authors has been reported an optically tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a photomechanical polymer. It was based on a typical FBG with a downsized diameter of 60 ㎛, coated with azobenzene-containing polymer material. Azobenzene is a well-known reversibly photomechanical stretchable material under ultraviolet (UV) light. The small part of the functional-coating region on the FBG absorbed UV light, which pulled the UV-exposed part of the grating. It was selectable as tunable FBG or tunable chirped FBG, by adjusting the position of UV exposure on the grating. As proof of concept for the tunable FBG device, the characteristics just including UV-induced center-wavelength shift and spectral-width changes of the device were reported. In this paper, we report for the first time that the microactuator makes it possible to control the spectral shape of the FBG reflection, according to the specifications (shape and intensity) of the UV beam that reaches the FBG coated with the azobenzene polymer. In addition, we provide the group-delay profiles for the chirped FBG, so that the sign of its dispersion (normal or anomalous) can be tailored by simply selecting the moving direction of the UV light's displacement in the experiment.
