A study was conducted to compare and determine the incidence of ultrastructural alterations in the testes of Philippine carabaos and crossbred buffaloes. Thirteen Philippine carabao bulls and twenty five crossbred male buffaloes were used in this study. Testicular biopsy was used to get tissue samples which were prepared for histologic evaluation using the electron microscopy method. There was no significant difference in Sertoli cell alterations between Philippine carabaos and crossbred buffaloes. However, more crossbred buffaloes (40%) had both Sertoli cell and spermatogenic cell alterations which were significantly higher compared to the 7.7% occurrence in Philippine carabaos. Sertoli cells of crossbred buffaloes exhibited intracavitary structures and exaggerated infoldings of the nuclear envelope (36%), nuclear bleb (16%), and intracytoplasmic vacuolations (16%). Philippine carabaos exhibited few ultrastructural alterations which were mainly intracytoplasmic vacuolations in Sertoli cells (15%).
A histochemical and ultrastructural study on the salivary gland of a freshwater snail Radix auricularia coreana was conducted .The epithelial cells of the salivary gland are composed of 9 types of cells. Two types out of them work as frame cells supporting the epithelium and the secretory cells embedded within the epithelium Seven types of secretory cells are classifiable depend on their histochemical reactions and ultrastructures. The materials secreted by the secretory cells are neutral mucopolysaccharide, acid mucopolysaccharide, and glycogen.
The aim of this research was to discover the action mechanism of various antituberculosis agents (isoniazid, paraaminosalicylic acid and streptomycin) which act on Mycobacteria tuberculosis hominis $H_{37}R_v$ and also to study the relationship of ultrastructural changes and the growth pattern in Mycobacterium tuberculosis hominis. The ultrastructural change was observed with an electron microscope while the growth pattern was studied through in vitro culture. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The ultrastructural changes found in the group treated only with isoniazid were the loss of nuclear materials and the appearence of electron dense granules. 2. In the group treated with paraaminosalicylic acid, thickening of nuclear filaments and meso some arrangement disorders were observed. 3. In the group treated with streptomycin, the ribosome particles appeared indistinct and the cytoplasm was denaturalized. 4. In the group cross treated with all three agents, all the ultrastructural changes mentioned above could be observed in the cell just as they appeared in the single treated groups. 5. In all of the single and in the crossly treated group, there were no significant changes note in the cell wall or cytoplasmic membranes of any of the cells observed. 6. In the cultural data in vitro, through the crossly treated group and single treated group. growth was observed in 3-5 weeks of culture.
Platelet activating factor (PAP) has been known as implicating as one of potent inflammatory mediators and reported 0 be involved in inflammation and allergy. PAF induces ciliary dysfunction and epithelial damage of human paranasal sinus mucosa in vitro. However, several recent papers have reported that PAF may not readily damage the airway epithelium. The aim of this study was to investigate the ultrastructural evidence to elucidate the pathogenesis of epithelial damage induced by PAF. Sixteen $\mu\textrm{g}$ g of PAF was applied into the maxillary sinuses of 6 rabbits. Rabbits were divided into 2 subgroups along with time interval at 1st and 3rd experimental day, and sinus mucosae were taken for the histopathologic study using electron microscopy. At 1st day, epithelial cells showed no ultrastructural change. Ultrastructures of the cilia were well preserved. Subepithelial space showed no evidence of the infiltration of inflammatory cells. Intravascular platelet aggregation and swelling of endothelial cells were evident. At 3rd day, epithelial cells showed vacuolar degeneration. Fusion of cilia forming giant cilia and focal loss of cilia were evident. Eosinophils were infiltrated in subepithelial and intraepithelial space. Swelling of endothelial cells, and migration of inflammatory cells into the connective tissue were evident. This study implies that epithelial damage induced by PAF may be secondary to the cytotoxicity of mobilized eosinophils rather than direct cytotoxicity of PAF.

This study was designed to investigate the ultrastructural alterations of the hepatocyte and bile canaliculus of the fasted mice with transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The morphometry was also carried out for the caliber of the bile canaliculus and the number, length and thickness of the microvillus. The hepatocyte observed in the three day fasting group showed ultrastructural images of active function. The dilated bile canaliculi, especially of type II were increased in number as compared with those seen in the normal group. However, the hepatocyte observed in the six day fasting group showed ultrastructural images of inactive function. The bile canaliculi without dilation (type I) were increased in number. The number of microvilli were identical with one another among the different types of bile canaliculi, while their length and thickness were reduced in the dilated bile canaliculi. From the evidence, the luminal size of the bile canaliculi seems to be easily changeable according to the functional state of the hepatocyte. However, the microvilli may not be changed in number but may be changed length and thickness when the bile canaliculi are dilated.
This study was undertaken to investigate ultrastructural changes according to the radiosensitivity in the spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cell of the seminiferous tubules in Korean native pheasants. During spermatogenetic period, testes were collected from male adult Korean native pheasant and they were used as experimental and control birds. The experimental group was divided into a single-dose whole body irradiation group (400, 600, 800 and 1,000 rads) and a split-dose whole body irradiation groups(400/2, 600/2, 800/2 and 1,000/2 rads). The experimental birds were sacrificed at 24 and 72 hrs after irradiation and the control pheasants were sacrificed at the same time. Ultrastructural changes of Sertoli cells and spermatogonia were investigated by ultrathin section with electron microscope. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The apoptosis was observed after 72 hrs group of the single-dose irradiation of 400 rads. 2. The cytoplasmic organelles of spermatogonia were severely damaged more than that of sertoli cell in 72 hours group of split-dose irradiation of 800 rads. 3. The cytoplasmic organelles of Sertoli cell were severely damaged except the nuclear membrane of Sertoli cells in 72 hrs group of split-dose irradiation of 1,000 rads.
A number of recent ultrastructural studies have shown marked differences between the two lining cell types in adult liver sinusoids, endothelial cells and Kupffer cells. In the present study, the ultrastructural features and electron microscopic cytochemistry of sinusoidal lining cells in the fetal liver were studied through fetal period to neonate in the rat. At fetal period, the sinusoid, which contains various blood component, in lined by the endothelial cells, the Kupffer cells and the fat storing cells that located in the space of Disse. As gestation proceeded, these eel's are arranged as adult liver sinusoids. The sinusoidal wall appears to be discontinuous with open fenestration between endothelial cells, but no basal lamina can observed. It seems to be morphologically and functionally distinct at the early gestation between the endothelial cells and the Kupffer cells, the latter showing marked phagocytized activity. The fat storing cells, which contain several fat droplets, are located in the space of Disse. Ultrastructural localization of the acid and alkaline phosphatase activity were noted on the sinusoidal lining cells.
This study aims to demonstrate the effect of SOD (superoxide dismutase), one of the antioxidant enzymes, on the ultrastructural changes in the parietal cells caused by the administration of cisplatin in the rat. A total of 60 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 200 gm were used as experimental animals. Cisplatin (6 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to rats pretreated with 15,000 unit/kg of SOD or rats without the pretreatment. The experimental animals were sacrificed at 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours and 3 days after the administration of cisplatin. The results were as follows: 1. SOD alone did not affect the ultrastructural changes in the gastric parietal cells in the rat. 2. Irregular shaped mitochondria, mitochondria with dim cristae, dilated cristae, ruptured outer membrane, electron lucent matrix and degenerative mitochondria were seen in cisplatin treated rat. Whorled membranous body, many lysosomes and large vacuole were observed in the gastric parietal cells in cisplatin treated rat. 3. Mitochondria with dilated cristae and electron lucent matrix and irregular shaped mitochondria were observed in the gastric parietal cells of the cisplatin treated rat with pretreatment of SOD. These results suggest that SOD attenuates the toxic effect of the cisplatin in the gastric parietal cells of the rat.
The ultrastructural changes and differentiation mechanism of chromoplasts and leucoplasts from Proplastids in root tip cells of Panax ginseng seedlings were studied with transmission electron microscope. Initial cells have so many proplastids with a few osmiophilic droplets and a lot of mitochon dria at early stage of germination, therefore electron density of cytoplasm is generally higher than that of the other cells just like periblem, plerome and root cap. Proplastids are observed in the initial cells, but only leucoplasts appeared in the central root cap cells. Because root cap cells are derived ultimately from initial cells, the cell organelles in the root cap cells are directly related by those of initial cells. This result postulates that leucoplast is diferentiated from proplastid, and this is the same with other's concepts. On the contrary, the precise observations of chromoplast with crystalline inclusions in the peripheral root cap cells can conclude the direct pathway of chromoplast development from proplastid. Because of the differences of these result from those of other experiments, new scheme of plastid development, direct differentiation of chromoplast from proplastid, can be postulated. And this is the originality of this research on the differentiation of plastids.
