The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum extraction method suitable for the availability of biological activities in unripe apples known to be rich in functional components. Unripe apples 'Hongro' picked on May 28th, 2019 were extracted by various extraction methods (hot water, ethanol, enzymatic pre-treatment, ultrasonic wave, and subcritical water) and their extracts were investigated yield, effective component contents, and antioxidant activities. Overall, the yields by the extraction solvent were higher in water than in organic solvent(ethanol) because water-soluble compounds were eluted from a polar solvent. Total phenol contents of the ultrasonic wave (ethanol) extracts were significantly higher in 6 times than hot water extract. Contents of flavonoid were highest in the ethanol extract at 29.14 mg QE/g. Contents of tannin and ursolic acid were also significantly higher in the ultrasonic wave (ethanol) extract. The DPPH radical and ABTS radical scavenging activities were the strongest in the ultrasonic wave (ethanol) extract. Correlation between effective components and antioxidant activities was high in the total phenol content with ABTS and the ursolic acid content with DPPH (p<0.01). The above results suggested that ultrasonic wave (ethanol) extract of unripe apples has the potential to act as a functional material.

This paper describes a new technique for thickness measurement of a very thin layer less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave used in the ultrasonic pulse-echo measurements. The technique determines the thickness of a thin layer in a tapered medium from constructive interference of multiple reflection waves. The interference characteristics are derived and investigated in theoretical and experimental approaches. Modified total reflection wave g(t) defined as difference between total and first reflection waves increases in amplitude as the interfacial layer thickness decreases down to zero. A layer thickness less than one-tenth of the ultrasonic wavelength is measured using the maximum amplitude of g(t) with a good accuracy and sensitivity. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness information from the waveforms of reflected waves, so that it makes possible to have the on-line thickness measurement of a thin layer such as a lubricating oil film in thrust bearings and journal bearings during manufacturing process.

In this study. object transport method based on ultrasonic flexural vibration is presented. Ultrasonic vibration generates ultrasonic traveling waves on the surface of elastic medium. Objects are transported through the interaction with traveling waves propagating in medium. Two types of transport methods are studied: frictional drive and acoustic levitation. With frictional drive, objects are transported in contact with the beam in the opposite direction of wave propagation whereas with acoustic levitation, objects are acoustically levitated above the beam surface and transported in the wave propagation direction. Transport characteristics are experimentally investigated using objects of different shapes and sizes. The transition from acoustic levitation mode to frictional drive mode is also examined. and it is found to occur when the ratio of mass to area of an object exceeds the threshold ratio of mass to area. It is envisaged that this feasibility study will serve as a stepping-stone for ultrasonic vibration to become an effective industrial material handling device in the future.
The present paper investigated the correlation between the acoustic pressure variations and the augmentation of heat transfer in the ultrasonic induced acoustic fields. The augmentation ratios of heat transfer coefficient were experimentally measured and were compared with the profile of the pressure distribution in the acoustic fields predicted by numerical analysis. For numerical analysis, a coupled finite element-boundary element method (coupled FE-BEM) was applied. The results of the present study reveal that the acoustic pressure is higher near two ultrasonic transducers than other points where no ultrasonic transducer was installed. The augmentation trend of heat transfer is similar with the profile of the acoustic pressure distribution. In other words, as the acoustic pressure increases, the higher augmentation ratio of heat transfer is obtained. Numerical and experimental studies clearly show that the acoustic pressure variations are closely related to the augmentation of heat transfer in the acoustic fields.
This paper shows error in the polarization direction on ultrasonic transducers how sensitive the shear ultrasonic waves are to a little misoriented plies according to the angle variation of shear ultrasonic waves $0{\circ},\;45{\circ}$ and $90{\circ}$. Also, it is shown that shear waves, particularly the transmission mode with the transmitter and receiver perpendicular to cach other, have high sensitivity for detecting anomalies in fiber orientation and ply layup sequence that may occur in the manufacturing of composite laminates. Experimental results are agreed with a modeling solutions which was based on decomposition of shear wave polarization vector as it propagates through the composite laminates. This wave appeared considerably to be sensitive to CFRP composites to thickness direction along in-plane fibers.

This paper describes a new technique for thickness measurement of a very thin layer less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the thickness of a thin layer in a layered medium form the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the back side layer of interst. Thickness of a very thin layer few inch deep inside the media can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transducer over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a thin layer. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveform of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the thickness of the layer.

In this paper, we proposed a novel control method which uses the internal impedance angles as a control parameter to drive traveling wave type ultrasonic motor. An impedance characteristic of the ultrasonic motor is obtained by analysis of the equivalent circuits including the external inductor used to generate the coupled resonance. The phase angle of internal impedance to achieve optimal control performance is derived. For the tracking of impedance angle, an information of phase difference is obtained from the applied voltage and current. The high speed phase difference detector is designed to monitor the phases of ultrasonic motor. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is clarified by experiments.
Ultrasonic cleaning at high frequency around 1 MHz, called megasonic cleaning, is commonly used to remove particles less than 1 ㎛ by generating high frequency accelerations on the cleaning objects. Cleaning is performed in an ultrasonically-excited liquid contained in a double-structured container. Ultrasonic waves generated by piezoelectric transducers propagate in the outer container and are transmitted through the inner container. The bottom of the inner container is inclined to make oblique incidence of the ultrasonic wave in order to raise the efficiency of the transmission through the bottom plate. This work deals with the efficiency of the transmission, which directly affects the cleaning performance. The transmission characteristics of the ultrasonic wave in the megasonic cleaner have been obtained analytically and numerically for the variations of some parameters, such as the thickness and inclined angle of the bottom plate of the inner container and the chemical ratio and temperature of the cleaning liquid. The calculated results have yielded the optimum cleaning condition in terms of the sound power transmitted into the cleaning liquid.

Some studies have been made on the effects of the attenuation on the result of ultrasonic examination of austenitic stainless steel weldment and also on the cause of false indications. The differences in the amplitudes and the metal paths of the ultrasonic examinations have been measured experimentally, for two kinds of waves, one passed through only the parent material and the other one through the weldment. The effect of probe angles and frequency on the examination data have been investigated using the shear wave. It has been found that the false indications were caused by back reflection from the weld metal surface due to the characteristics of ultrasonic wave propagation. It has been confirmed that the probe of $2.25\;MHz\;and\;60^{\circ}$ is the best choice in the ultrasonic examination and that the correction of amplitude for attenuations is necessary.

This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.
