  • The existing design criteria f3r the estimation of ultimate bearing capacity of drilled shaft socketed into rock masses are mainly obtained from the ultimate pile load capacities, which are determined by inconsistent failure criteria. Therefore, these design criteria generally produce difffrent predictions even for drilled shaft in the same condition. In this paper, the accuracies of the existing design criteria are investigated to develop an optimized design process for drilled shaft socketed into rock masses. Reasonable and consistent ultimate capacities of drilled shafts socked into rock masses, necessary far the check of accuracies of predictions, are determined by applying a specific failure criterion to a total of 11 pile load test results. A comparison between the predicted and the measured load capacities shows that ultimate base load capacities calculated from Zhang and Einstein's equation and NAVFAC are close to the measured values. Rosenberg and Journeaux's equation produces satisfactory prediction f3r ultimate side load capacity.

  • This paper is an experimental result of performing the prototype of anchor tests in field to investigate the ultimate uplifting capacity of permanent anchor embedded in weathered rock. For prototype of actual anchor test in situ, four grouted anchors having various anchor lengths were installed in field and their ultimate uplift capacities were obtained by analyzing test results of load-displacement curves obtained from field uplift tests. On the other hand, creep tests, applying pull-out loading at the stage of the maximum loading during 15 minutes, were performed to investigate ultimate resisting capacity of anchor so that the values of creep rate at the ultimate loading conditions were evaluated. Dial gauges were installed on the surface of ground to measure the vertical displacement distribution from the anchor so that the failure mechanism of permanent anchor embedded in weathered rock and failure boundary of ground during application of loading were evaluated.

  • The main objective of this study was to offer informations about the current conditions of stream sediments and to evaluate biochemical methane potentials of stream sediments from the urban streams in Busan city using conventional BMP tests. First we select total 5 urban streams and collect sediment samples. Then, COD, proximate analysis, volatile solid, organic carbon content and elemental analysis were conducted to determine characteristics of the sediments. Results show that COD, volatile solid and organic carbon content are determined in the range of $15.20{\sim}75.07mg\;g^{-1}$, 2.34~11.54% and 1.28~34.21%, respectively. Also, several biochemical methane potential tests were performed in a laboratory. As a result, pH values of the reactors generally increased and then stabilized at 7.11~7.35. In addition, C/N ratio, ultimate methane and carbon dioxide yield (mL/g VS) and biodegradability (%) were determined to 1.05~10.27, 10.1~179.4, 10.3~34.4 and 4.0~30.1, respectively. For the determination of the correlations between ultimate methane yield and ultimate carbon dioxide yield, C/N ratio, COD, volatile solid and organic carbon content, a linear model was fitted to the data using a least-squares algorithm. As a result, except for COD ($r^2=0.7586$) and volatile solid ($r^2=0.7876$), Linear model was well fitted to each data with good values of the correlation coefficient ($r^2=0.9795{\sim}0.9858$). Finally, we propose empirical equations, which contain C/N ratio or TOC, for the prediction of ultimate methane yield for the urban streams in Busan city.

  • To investigate the relationship between strain distribution and tensile properties of brittle material, five types of tensile coupon of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) modified the tab portion in order to have a strain distribution including S0, SD1, SD2, SV1, SV2 were tested. The ultimate stress and strain of SD2 and SV2 which was intended to have larger strain distribution were smaller than those of SD1 and SV1, that was more clearly shown in the test results of the symmetric coupons (SV series) than the asymmetric coupons (SD series). In addition, the ultimate stress and strain of most coupons with strain distribution in this study were decreased when compared to the control group with uniform strain. These results were analyzed in various ways through 1) the average of the strain values directly measured by the strain gages, 2) the converted strain calculated by dividing the total deformation by the effective length, and 3) the ultimate effective strain derived from both the elastic modulus and the ultimate load. The values measured by strain gage indicates response of the local region precisely, but it does not represent the response from whole section. However, the converted strain and effective strain can supplement disadvantage of gage because they represent the average response of whole section. In particular, the effective strain can provide rupture strain conservatively, which can be utilized in practice, when the value obtained by strain gage was not effective due to gage damage or abnormal gage readings near ultimate load. This value provides a value that can be used even when partial rupture has occurred and is reasonably useful for specimens with strain distribution.

  • Experimental investigation on the structural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) beams subjected to shear are presented. Six tests carried out on simply supported I-beams under concentrated loads are presented. The parameters varied were the volume fraction of the fibers (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%) and shear span-effective depth ratio (2.5, 3.4). The test results indicated that ultimate shear strength increased with increasing fiber volume, and that ultimate shear strength decreased with increasing shear span-effective depth ratio. In addition, applicability of predictive equations for evaluating the ultimate shear strength of steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams are estimated based on the test results. The comparison between computed values and the experimentally observed values are shown to validate the proposed theoretical equations. It is found that predictions by using AFGC and JSCE recommendations provide the most accurate estimates of shear strength of steel fiber-reinforced UHPC beams.

  • PURPOSE. In this study, three bioceramic materials, [IPS Empress CAD (Ivoclar), IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar), and Lava Ultimate CAD (3M ESPE)] were treated with three commercial mouthrinses [Listerine, Tantum Verde, and Klorhex]; and changes in colour reflectance and surface roughness values were then quantitatively assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred and twenty ceramic samples, with dimensions of $2{\times}12{\times}14mm$, were prepared and divided into nine sample groups, except three control samples. The samples were immersed in the mouthrinse solutions for 120 hrs, and changes in colour reflectance and surface roughness values were measured by UV light spectrophotometry (Vita Easyshade; VITA Zahnfabrik) and by profilometer device (MitutoyoSurftest SJ-301), respectively. The change of surface roughness was inspected by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). RESULTS. There was a positive correlation between the ${\Delta}E$ and increase in the surface roughness. Two of the ceramic materials, IPS Empress and Lava Ultimate, were affected significantly by the treatment of the mouthrinse solutions (P<.05). The most affecting solution was Tantum Verde and the most affected material was Lava Ultimate. As expected, the most resistant material to ${\Delta}E$ and chemical corrosion was IPS e max CAD among the materials used. CONCLUSION. This work implied that mouthrinse with lower alcohol content had less deteriorating effect on colour and on the surface morphology of the bioceramic materials.

  • There have been conducted a lot of works on shear behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. Fiber reinforced concrete beams without shear reinforcement were tested to determine their cracking shear strengths and ultimate shear capacities. Results of tests on 14 reinforced concrete beams (including 11 containing steel fibers) are reported. Two parameters were varied in the study, namely, the volume fraction of fibers and shear span-to-depth ratio. The effects of fiber incorporation on failure modes, deflections, cracking shear strength, and ul~imate shear strength have been examined. Resistance to shear stresses have been found to be improved by the inclusion of fibers, The mode of failure changed from shear to flexure when the shear span-to-depth ratio exceeds 3.4. Based on these investigations, a method of computing the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beam is suggested. The comparisons between computed values and expenmentally observed values are shown to verify the proposed theoretical treatment and steel fibers efficiency.

  • Although a critical section reaches its flexural strength in reinforced concrete structures, the structure does not always fail because moment redistribution occurs during the formation of plastic hinges. Inelastic deformation in a plastic hinge region results in plastic rotation. A plastic hinge mainly depends on material characteristics. In this study, a plastic hinge length and plastic rotation are evaluated using the flexural curvature distribution which is derived from the material models given in Eurocode 2. The influence on plastic capacity the limit values of the material model used, that is, ultimate strain of concrete and steel and hardening ratio of steel(k), are investigated. As results, it is appeared that a large ultimate strain of concrete and steel is resulting in large plastic capactiy and also as a hardening ratio of steel increases, the plastic rotation increases significantly. Therefore, a careful attention would be paid to determine the limit values of material characteristics in the RC structures.

  • In this study, we analyzed the physical and chemical properties such as proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, heating values, and thermogravimetric analysis for the organic sludges discharged from an industrial complex in Ulsan. The average water, combustible, and ash content of organic sludges were 72.9, 18.5, and 8.6%, respectively. And according to the ultimate analysis of organic sludges, the C, O, H, N, and S compositions were 33.9, 26.4, 4.4, 4.4, and 0.6%, respectively. According to the results of investigating the lower heating values, 6 sludges were on the range of $1,500{\sim}2,000\;kcal/kg$ and 4 sludges were on the range of over 2,000 kcal/kg. Therefore, these 10 sludges could be directly applied to industries which try to use the energy by direct incineration.
