A general earthquake resistant design philosophy of ductile frame buildings allows beams to form plastic hinges adjacent to beam-column connections. In order to carry out this design philosophy, the ultimate bond or shear strength of the beam should be greater than the flexural yielding force and should not degrade before reaching its required ductility. The behavior of RC members dominated by bond or shear action reveals a dramatic reduction of energy dissipation in the hysteretic response due to the severe pinching effects. In this study, a method was proposed to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete members with short-span-to-depth-ratios, which would result in bond failure after flexural yielding. Repeated or cyclic loading produces a progressive deterioration of bond that may lead to failure at lower cyclic bond stress levels. Accumulation of bond damage is caused by the propagation of micro-cracks and progressive crushing of concrete in front of the lugs. The proposed method takes into account bond deterioration due to the degradation of concrete in the post yield range. In order to verify bond deformability of the proposed method, the predicted results were compared with the experimental results of RC members reported in the technical literature. Comparisons between the observed and calculated bond deformability of the tested RC members showed reasonably good agreement.

When RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures are exposed to sea water, steel corrosion can occur and this leads a degradation of structural performance. Referring the electro-deposition system with sea water from the 1st step research, durability and structural performance are evaluated in coated steel and RC members containing it in the 2nd research. In the durability performance test, Half Cell Potential test is performed and the coated steel is evaluated to have the high resistance to corrosion, which shows only 35% of corrosion velocity in normal (bare) steel. In the structural performance test, tensile strength, adhesive strength, and flexural/shear in RC member are performed. For the electro-deposit coated steel, increasing ratios of 3.2% and 8.8% are evaluated in the test of tensile strength and adhesive strength, respectively. For the structural test in RC member, there is no big difference between RC members with coated and non-coated steel in ultimate load and failure pattern It is evaluated that the chemical compound with $CaCO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ from electro-deposition causes slightly increased structural performance. The electro-deposit coated steel can be more widely applied after performance verification from several tests like fatigue, resistance to impact, and long term-submerging test.
This study examines the behaviour of single micropiles subjected to axial tension or compression load in collapsible loess under in-situ moisture content and saturated condition. Five tension loading tests and five compression loading tests on single micropiles were carried out at a typical loess site of the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. A series of laboratory tests, including grain size distribution, specific gravity, moisture content, Atterberg limits, density, granular components, shear strength, and collapse index, were carried out during the micropile loading tests to determine the values of soil parameters. The loess at the test site poses a severe collapse risk upon wetting. The tension or compression load-displacement curves of the micropiles in loess, under in-situ moisture content or saturated condition, can generally be simplified into three distinct regions: an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, and the bearing capacity or failure load can be interpreted by the L1-L2 method as done in other studies. Micropiles in loess should be considered as frictional pile foundations though the tip resistances are about 10%-15% of the applied loads. Both the tension and compression capacities increase linearly with the ratio of the pile length to the shaft diameter, L/d. For micropiles in loess under in-situ moisture content, the interpreted failure loads or capacities under tension are 66%-87% of those under compression. However, the prewetting of the loess can lead to the reductions of 50% in the tensile bearing capacity and 70% in the compressive bearing capacity.
The goal of rotator cuff repairs is to achieve high initial fixation strength, minimize gap formation, maintain mechanical stability under cyclic loading and optimize the biology of the tendon-bone interface until the cuff heals biologically to the bone. Single row repairs are least successful in restoring the footprint of the rotator cuff and are most susceptible to gap formation. Double row repairs have an improved load to failure and minimal gap formation. Transosseous equivalent repairs (suture bridge technique) have the highest ultimate load and resistance to shear and rotational forces and the lowest gap formation. Even though the superior advantages of double row and transosseous equivalent repairs, those techniques take longer surgical time and are more expensive than single row repairs. Therefore single row repairs can be useful in bursal side partial thickness or small size full thickess rotator cuff tear.
A finite element formulation based on the CFT(Compression Field Theory), considering the effect of compression softening in cracked concrete, and macro-scopic and rotating crack models etc., was presented for the nonlinear behaviour of structural concrete. Considering the computational efficency and the ability of modelling the post-ultimate behaviour as major concerns, the Incremental displacement solution algorithm involving initial material stiffnesses and the relaxation procedure for fast convergence was adopted and formulated in a type of 8-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The analysis program NASCOM(Non1inear Analysis of Structural Concrete by FEM : Monotonic Loading) developed in this way enables the predictions of strength and deformation capacities in a full range, crack patterns and their corresponding widths, and yield extents of reinforcement. As the verification purpose of NASCOM, the predictions were made for Bhide's Panel(PB21) and Leonhardt's deep beam tests. The predicted results shows somewhat stiff behaviour for the panel test, and vice versa for deep beam tests. More refining process would be necessary hereafter in terms of more accurately simulating the effects of tension-stiffening and compression softening in concrete.
In this study, centrifuge model tests were fulfilled to investigate the characteristics of bearing capacity of paper ash as a filling material. The model tests were done varying the footing width and gravity level. The settlement and vertical soil pressure by loading were measured. The results from the tests were compared with the one from FLAC program using finite difference method and bearing capacity theory. After all, it was shown that the characteristics of load-settlement represented the local shear failure, which the settlement ratio s/B showed inflection point around 25~30%. As g-level and footing width were increasing, the load strength was increasing. The ultimate bearing capacity from the tests was very closed the results from Terzaghi's theory. As the distance from footing center was increasing, the vertical soil pressure was decreasing. If E/B is higher than 7, the stress by loading was almost increasing. The vertical displacement from loading was the largest one around under the footing and was almost occurred when the depth>4cm and E/B is higher than 5.0.
Titanium and its alloys have been widely using in the various field of industry application due to high corrosion resistant properties and mechanical properties. Titanium is highly reactive in the high temperature state and the formation of titanium oxide and porosities in the nuggets of fusion welding will results in the degradation of the mechanical properties. For this reason the studies of friction stir welding for titanium have been investigated recently. The FSW zones of titanium were classified by the weld nugget (WN), the linear transition boundary (TB) and the heat affected zone (HAZ). The WN along with titanium parent was characterized by the presence of twins and dislocations. The average grain size and hardness of WN has been changed according to heat input. The grain refinement resulted from the FSW increased the hardness in the stir zone. Sound dissimilar joints between SUS 304 and CP-Ti were achieved using an advancing speed of 50 mm/min and rotation speeds in the range of 700-1100 rpm. Aluminum 1060 and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V plates were lap joined by friction stir welding, hence the ultimate tensile shear strength of joint reached 100% of Al 1060. Mg alloy and Ti were successfully butt joined by inserting a probe into the Mg alloy plate with slightly offsetting. But Ti-Al intermetallic compound layers formed at the interface of these joints.
Just as infill material can reduce the shear strength of a rock joint, a layer of soft material between concrete and the surrounding rock socket can reduce pile shaft resistance of drilled shafts socketed in rocks. This can also result from construction methods that leave smeared or remoulded rock or drilling fluid residue on the sides of the rock sockets after concrete placement. The nature of the interface between the concrete pile shaft and the surrounding rock is critically important to the performance of the pile, and is heavily influenced by construction practice. Characteristics of the concrete-rock interface, such as roughness and the presence of the soft materials deposited during or after construction can significantly affect the shaft resistance response of the pile. In this study, we conducted the parametric study to examine the performance characteristics of drilled shafts socketed in smeared rock under the vertical load with the code of finite difference method of FLAC 2D. As the results of the current research, the parameters that affect the settlement of the pile head and the ultimate unit shaft resistance could be identified.
Recently a method for increasing the bearing capacity by laying the reinforcing materials with three or four layers as a method reinforcing the ground was studied recently. The purpose of this study is to examine the method for increasing shear-strength factor of the ground by reinforcing the ground under the foundation. According a method of wrapping ground with bakk-shape or semicircle-shape by geotextile was developed in this study and it looks likes anaspect that spreading footing exits under spread footing. A simulation loading-test using Aluminum sticks was carried out in order to examine the mechanism about bearing capacity of spread footing reinforced by geotextile. Increase of ultimate bearing capacity was verified in this simulation loading-test when charging loads to spread footing, which is propose from this study, reinforced by geotextile. And moving directions of points of the ground were also checked by grid-type indication method, and the areas where plastic failure appeared were checked by B-shutter photographing.
The seismic responses of a building are affected by the connection characteristics that have effects on structural stiffness. In this study, push-over analysis and time history analysis were performed to estimate structural behavior of 2D eight-story unbraced steel structures with partially restrained composite connections using a nonlinear dynamic analysis program. Nonlinear $M-{\theta}$characteristics of connection and material inelastic characteristics of composite beam and steel column were considered. The idealization of composite semi-rigid connection as fully rigid connection yielded an increase in initial stiffness and ultimate strength in the push-over analysis. In time history analysis, the stiffness and hysteretic behavior of connections have effects on base-shear force, maximum story-drift and maximum moment in beams and columns. For seismic waves with PGA of 0.4 g, the structure with the semi-rigid composite connections shows the maximum story-drift with less than the life safety criteria by FEMA 273 and no inelastic behavior of beam and column, whereas in the structure with rigid connections, beams and columns have experienced inelastic behaviors.
