Flat-slabs, being a significant structural component, not only reduce the dead load of the structure but also reduce the amount of concrete required for construction. Moreover the use of recycled aggregates lowers the impact of large scale construction to nearby ecosystems. Recycled aggregate based concrete being a quasi-brittle material shows enormous cracking during failure. Crack growth in flat-slabs is mostly in sliding mode (Mode II). Therefore sufficient sections need to be provided for resistance against such failure modes. The main objective of the paper is to numerically determine the ultimate load carrying capacity of two self-similar flat-slab specimens and validate the results experimentally for the natural aggregate as well as recycled aggregate based concrete. Punching shear experiments are carried out on circular flat-slab specimen on a rigid circular knife-edge support built out of both normal (NAC) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC, with full replacement). Uniaxial compression and bending tests have been conducted on cubes, cylinders and prisms using both types of concrete (NAC and RAC) for its material characterization and use in the numerical scheme. The numerical simulations have been conducted in ABAQUS (a known finite element software package). Eight noded solid elements have been used to model the flat slab and material properties have been considered from experimental tests. The inbuilt Concrete Damaged Plasticity model of ABAQUS has been used to monitor crack propagation in the specimen during numerical simulations.

The FRP-concrete composite deck system has advantages of corrosion free and easy construction. The system is, however, comprised of two brittle materials, so that it suffers from inherent disadvantage of lack of ductility. In this study, some conceptual design is presented for preventing the brittle failure of FRP-concrete composite deck at ultimate load level. 4-point bending tests are performed for FRP-concrete composite beams using FRC(Fiber Reinforced Concrete). The specimens use the box-shape FRP member in the lower portion. Four types of concrete with different compressive strengths and ductilities including normal mortar and 3 FRCs are placed in the upper portion. Typical failure mode in the test is identified; Concrete compressive failure occurs first at the maximum moment region, and the interfacial debonding between FRP and concrete member proceeds. Finally, the tensile rupture of FRP member occurs. The specimen using FRC with the high compressive ductility of concrete fails with less brittle manner than other specimens. The reason is that the ductility from the concrete in compression prevents the sudden loss of load-carrying capacity after compressive concrete failure.

Based on limited number of tests on reinforced wood beams using polymer mortar in this study, following conclusions were drawn ; 1.Reinforcing compression side of wood beam using polymer mortar was effective in reducing deflection. 2.By increasing thickness of polymer mortar, effective beam stiffness was improved, but energy absorption was reduced. 3.Polymer mortar reinforcement improved compressive strength and reduced strain in compression side of the beam. Therefore, it was possible to change the failure mode from by compression in control beam to by tension in composite beams. 4.The composite beams that have more than 2cm of polymer mortar layer did not perform well because a strain redistribution and separation of meterials at interface were induced in moment span. 5.To maximize the load carrying capacity of composite beam, it is necessary to make polymer mortar and wood behave together without failing at interface. To do this, it is needed to use a polymer mortar which has high strength with such elastic modulus that is closer to elastic modulus of wood. otherwise, it is recommended to use shear connectors at interface to prevent separation of materials under ultimate load.
In this research, we tested 10 simply supported concrete-encased composite columns under monotonic eccentric loads and investigated their shear behaviour. The specimens tested were two reinforced concrete specimens, three steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) specimens with an H-shaped steel section (also called a beam section), and five SRC specimens with a cruciform-shaped steel section (also called a column section). The experimental variables included the transverse steel shape's depth and the longitudinal steel flange's width. Experimental observations indicated the following. (1) The ultimate load-carrying capacity was controlled by web compression failure, defined as a situation where the concrete within the diagonal strut's upper end was crushed. (2) The composite effect was strong before the crushing of the concrete outside the steel shape. (3) We adjusted the softened strut-and-tie SRC (SST-SRC) model to yield more accurate strength predictions than those obtained using the strength superposition method. (4) The MSST-SRC model can more reasonably predict shear strength at an initial concrete softening load point. The rationality of the MSST-SRC model was inferred by experimentally observing shear behaviour, including concrete crushing and the point of sharp variation in the shear strain.

The present study focuses on examining the structural behaviour of steel-fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams under high rates of loading largely associated with impact problems. Fibres are added to the concrete mix to enhance ductility and energy absorption, which is important for impact-resistant design. A simple, yet practical non-linear finite-element analysis (NLFEA) model was used in the present study. Experimental static and impact tests were also carried out on beams spanning 1.3 meter with weights dropped from heights of 1.5 m and 2.5 m, respectively. The numerical model realistically describes the fully-brittle tensile behaviour of plain concrete as well as the contribution of steel fibres to the post-cracking response (the latter was allowed for by conveniently adjusting the constitutive relations for plain concrete, mainly in uniaxial tension). Suitable material relations (describing compression, tension and shear) were selected for SFRC and incorporated into ABAQUS software Brittle Cracking concrete model. A more complex model (i.e., the Damaged Plasticity concrete model in ABAQUS) was also considered and it was found that the seemingly simple (but fundamental) Brittle Cracking model yielded reliable results. Published data obtained from drop-weight experimental tests on RC and SFRC beams indicates that there is an increase in the maximum load recorded (compared to the corresponding static one) and a reduction in the portion of the beam span reacting to the impact load. However, there is considerable scatter and the specimens were often tested to complete destruction and thus yielding post-failure characteristics of little design value and making it difficult to pinpoint the actual load-carrying capacity and identify the associated true ultimate limit state (ULS). To address this, dynamic NLFEA was employed and the impact load applied was reduced gradually and applied in pulses to pinpoint the actual failure point. Different case studies were considered covering impact loading responses at both the material and structural levels as well as comparisons between RC and SFRC specimens. Steel fibres were found to increase the load-carrying capacity and deformability by offering better control over the cracking process concrete undergoes and allowing the impact energy to be absorbed more effectively compared to conventional RC members. This is useful for impact-resistant design of SFRC beams.

A test rig with multi-functional purposes was specifically designed and manufactured to study the behavior of multi-planar welded tubular joints subjected to multi-planar concurrent axial loading. An experimental investigation was conducted on full-scale welded tubular joints with each consisting of one chord and eight braces under monotonic loading conditions. Two pairs or four representative specimens (two specimens for each joint type) were tested, in which each pair was reinforced with two kinds of different internal stiffeners at the intersections between the chords using welded rectangular hollow steel sections (RHSSs) and the braces using rolled circular hollow steel sections (CHSSs) and welded RHSSs. The effects of different internal stiffeners at the chord-brace intersection on the load capacity of joints under concurrent multi-planar axial compression/tension are discussed. The test results of joint strengths, failure modes, and load-stress curves are presented. Finite element analyses were performed to verify the experimental results. The study results show that the two different joint types with the internal stiffeners at the chord-brace intersection under axial compression/tension significantly increase the corresponding ultimate strength to far exceed the usual design strength. The load carrying capacity of welded tubular joints decreases with a higher degree of the manufacturing imperfection in individual braces at the tubular joints. Furthermore, the interaction effect of the concurrent axial loading applied at the welded tubular joint on member stress is apparent.
Still no accurate theory exists for predicting ultimate shear strength of deep reinforced concrete beams because of the structural and material non-linearity after cracking. Currently, the load capacity assesment is performed for the upper structure of the bridges and containing non-reliability in the applications and results. The purpose in this study is to evaluate analytically the complex shear behaviors and normal strength for the reinforced concrete deep beams and to offer the accuracy load capacity assesment method based on the reliability theories. This paper presents a method for the load capacity assesment of reinforcement concrete deep beams using nonlinear finite element analysis. A computer program named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material non-linearity is taken Into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. From the results, determine the reliability index for the failure base on the Euro Code. Then, calculate additional reduction coefficient to satisfy the goals from the reliability analysis. The proposed numerical method for the load capacity assesment of reinforced concrete deep beams is verified by comparison with the others methods.

In a large scale of excavation for the foundation of large-sized structures and underground structures, a considerable amount of earth pressure can occur. Steel beams that have been used to form a temporary structure to support earth pressure may be less economical and less efficient in resisting the high earth pressure. To cope with this problem, PCT(Precast Concrete Truss) system has been devised and investigated both experimentally and analytically. A proper connection method between the concrete truss members was proposed to accommodate fast assembly and disassembly. Full-scale test of PCT system was performed to verify the load-carrying capacity of the PCT system including the connections. The test results were compared with those of structural analysis. The test specimen which corresponds to PCT strut attained the ultimate load without buckling, but the detail of connector members needs to be improved. It is expected that precast concrete truss members can be efficiently incorporated into a temporary structure for deep and large excavation by replacing conventional steel beams.
To evaluate the behavior of the advanced unbonded pre-stressed concrete containment vessel (UPCCV) for one typical China nuclear power plant under Japan's March 11 earthquake, five nonlinear time history analysis and a nonlinear static analysis of a 1:10 scale UPCCV structure have been carried out with MSC.MARC finite element program. Comparisons between the analytical and experimental results demonstrated that the developed finite element model can predict the earthquake behavior of the UPCCV with fair accuracy. The responses of the 1:10 scale UPCCV subjected to the 11 March 2011 Japan earthquakes recorded at the MYG003 station with the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 781 gal and at the MYG013 station with the PGA of 982 gal were predicted by the dynamic analysis. Finally, a static analysis was performed to seek the ultimate load carrying capacity for the 1:10 scale UPCCV.
By carrying out the experiment of eight pieces of brick masonry walls with pilaster strengthened by Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) and one piece of normal masonry wall with pilaster under low reversed cyclic loading, the failure characteristic of every wall is explained; Seismic performances such as hysteresis, stiffness and its degeneration, deformation, energy consumption and influence of some measures including strengthening means, reinforcement area proportion between GFRP and wall surface, "through-wall" anchor on reinforcement effects are studied. The test results showed that strengthening modes have little influence on stiffness, stiffness degeneration and deformation of the wall, but it is another thing for energy consumption of the wall; The ultimate load, deformation and energy consumption of the walls reinforced by glass fiber sheets was increased remarkably, rigidity and its degeneration was slower; Seismic performance of the wall which considers strengthening means, reinforcement area proportion between GFRP and wall surface, "through-wall" anchor at the same time is better than under the other conditions.
