  • This paper presents a super-resolution reconstruction method based on sparse representation for two-dimensional bar code images. Considering the features of two-dimensional bar code images, Kirsch and LBP (local binary pattern) operators are used to extract the edge gradient and texture features. Feature extraction is constituted based on these two features and additional two second-order derivatives. By joint dictionary learning of the low-resolution and high-resolution image patch pairs, the sparse representation of corresponding patches is the same. In addition, the global constraint is exerted on the initial estimation of high-resolution image which makes the reconstructed result closer to the real one. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for two-dimensional bar code images by comparing with other reconstruction algorithms.

  • Image processings using the two-dimensional wavelet transform (2DWT) have been a very active research area in recent years because the 2DWT possess many good properties. However, the discrete 2DWT can not be used for pattern recognition directly because it does not have the translation property. In this paper, we show why conventional discrete two-dimensional wavelet transforms cannot be used for pattern recognitions directly. Then, we propose a new method that makes it possible to use discrete 2DWT to pattern recognition without modification of standard pyramidal algorithms. The main idea of our method is to postprocess the wavelet transformed images using the second-order neural network. To justify the validity of the method, evaluations with test images were performed. The effectiveness of the method can be shown by the evaluation results.

  • A problem of relevant interest to some industries is that of the optimum two-dimensional layout. In this problem, one is given a number of rectangular sheets and an order for a specified number of each of certain types of two-dimensional regular and irregular shapes. The aim is to cut the shapes out of the sheets in such a way as to minimize the amount of waste produced. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithms using rotation parameters by which the best pattern of layout is found.

  • Pattern recognition in three dimensional image is highly sensitive to assigned value and formation of voxels (pixels for two dimension case). However, occurred while digital imaging, digitization error leads to unpredictable noises in image data. Skeletonization, a powerful tool of pattern recognition, is sensitively dependent on boundary formation. Without successful controlling of the noises, the results of skeletonization can not be allowed as a stable solution. To minimize the effect of noises affecting to boundary formation, we developed a robust processing method useful in skeletonization technique for pattern recognition. Finally, we provide rigorous test results achieved throughout simulation on analytic three dimensional image.

  • This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interfermetry(ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in- plane displacement. The analysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-plane strain analysis. But there is a controversial point, measurement error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itself, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. Further development of advanced first-order interpolation method is being undertaken for the more precise in-plane strain measurement.

  • This study intends to suggest production process of circular knitted jackets and dimensional change data of finished clothes after washing. the study provides pattern design method of circular knitted jackets by applying dimensional change. By doing so, the purpose of this study is to increase production efficiency through accurate order in consideration of loss amount of the fabrics in production. With the three fabric materials selected, this study investigated dimensional change of circular knitted jackets after sewing and washing by varying the parts to be attached to padding cloth and with or without inner lining. As for the fabric F-C (including the spandex, thicker and weightier than the other two fabrics), front width shrunk by 4.6%, which showed the biggest shrinkage among the jackets made of test fabrics. Then it suggested design methods of circular knitted jacket patterns to which dimensional change is applied according to materials, and analyzed the amount of fabric required for production by comparison of the materials. When using the fabric F-C without inner lining, there is big dimensional change and more than double amount of fabric is required. It is expected that the research results will be a basic data for pattern design and production process of circular knitted clothing.

  • The noise reduction of the In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aid (HA) can be achieved by arrays of microphones. Each of the right and the left ears was assumed to have two HA microphones. These arrays of HA microphones produce particular patterns of directivity by some time delay between two microphones. The directivity pattern geometrically increase the S/N ratio. The boundary element method (BEM) was used for the three dimensional simulation of the HA directivity pattern with the two pairs' microphone arrays. The separation between two microphones was fixed to 10 mm. The time delay between the two microphones was calculated to produce the most narrow directivity pattern in the fore front of the head. The variation of the time delay was examined in accordance with input frequencies. This numerical analysis may be then applied for the calculation of the time delay parameter of the digital hearing aid DSP chip.

  • Face recognition has recently become one of the most popular research areas in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition because it spans numerous applications, such as access control, surveillance, security, credit-card verification, and criminal identification. In this paper, we propose a simple descriptor called an ECSP(Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern) for illumination-robust face recognition. The ECSP operator encodes the texture information of a local face region by emphasizing diagonal components of a previous CS-LBP(Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern). Here, the diagonal components are emphasized because facial textures along the diagonal direction contain much more information than those of other directions. The facial texture information of the ECSP operator is then used as the input image of an image covariance-based feature extraction algorithm such as 2D-PCA(Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis). Performance evaluation of the proposed approach was carried out using various binary pattern operators and recognition algorithms on the Yale B database. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach achieved better recognition accuracy than other approaches, and we confirmed that the proposed approach is effective against illumination variation.

  • This paper is concerned with the unconstrained two-dimensional cutting problem of cutting small rectangles (products), each of which has its own profit and size, from a large rectangle (material) to maximize the profit-sum of products. Since this problem is used as a sub-problem to generate a cutting pattern in the algorithms for the two-dimensional cutting stock problem, most of researches for the two-dimensional cutting stock problem have been concentrated on solving this sub-problem more efficiently. This paper improves Hifi and Zissimopoulos's recursive algorithm, which is known as the most efficient exact algorithm, by applying newly proposed upper bound and searching strategy. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has been improved significantly in the computational amount of time as compared with the Hifi and Zissimopulos's algorithm.

  • A method, based upon the separation of cellular proteins by one-and two-dimensional electrophoresis was used for distinguishing butween Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains and Rhizobium fredii strains. Significant differences in protein pattern of one-dimensional SDS-PAGE vs-ere observed between Rhizobium fredii strains and Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains. The differences in six distinct main lands were observed among total 52 kinds of protein bands. Furthermore, the distribution of proteins in two groups by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was very different. The majority of visible proteins of Rhizobium fredii were acidic, whereas those of Bradyrhizobium japonicum were basic. In addition, amino acid composition was analyzed to detect the differences between two groups. No significant differences in amino acid composition were observed between Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains and Rhizobium fredii strains. The results indicate that one-and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were useful for identifying rhizobia isolates. One-dimensional SDS-PAGE of rhizobia proteins provided a rapid method for screening a large number of isolates, whereas two-dimensional electrophoresis was more of resolution and easiness for analyzing protein spots.
