  • The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k-$\omega$ turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in the cavity. An explicit 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme and an upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the van Leer limiters are used for time and space discritizations, respectively. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case, and same L/D and W/D ratio of I for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 1.5 and 450000 respectively. In the three-dimensional flow, the field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follows Rossiter's formula. In the two-dimensional simulation, the self-sustained oscillating flow has more violent fluctuation inside the cavity. The primary fluctuating frequencies of two- and three- dimensional flow agree very well with the 2nd mode of Rossiter's frequency. In the three-dimensional flow, the 1st mode of frequency could be seen.

  • An efficient model for three-dimensional analysis of multistory structures with flexible floor diaphrgms is proposed in this paper. Three-dimensional analysis of a building structure using a finite element model requires tedious input data preparation, longer computation time, and larger computer memory. The model proposed in this study is developed by assembling a series of two-dimensional resisting systems and is considered to overcome the shortcomings of a three-dimensional finite element model without deteriorating the accuracy of analysis results. Static and dynamic analysis results obtained using the proposed model are in excellent agreement with those obtained using three-dimensional finite element models in terms of displacement, periods, and mode shapes. Effects of floor diaphragm flexibility on seismic response of multistory building structures are investigated.

  • A three dimensional numerical model was developed to analyze the mold filling and solidification processes straightforwardly in a casting processes. On the basis of the SIMPLER algorithm, the VOF method and the Equivalent Specific Heat method were adopted to deal with the free surface behavior and the latent heat evolution. The complete model has been validated using exact solutions and experimental results. The importance of three-dimensional effects has been highlighted by comparing the results from the three-dimensional analysis with those given by a two-dimensional analysis.

  • In this paper we compare the solution of the one-dimensional beam model and the numerical solution of the two-dimensional linearized elasticity problem for rectangular domain of the beam-like form. We first derive the beam model starting from the two-dimensional linearized elasticity, the same way it is derived from the three-dimensional linearized elasticity. Then we present the numerical solution of the two-dimensional problem by finite element method. As expected the difference of two approximations becomes smaller as the thickness of the beam tends to zero. We then analyze the applicability of the one-dimensional model and verify the main properties of the beam modeling for thin beams.

  • Twodimensional warranty data can be modelled using two different approaches: twodimensional point process and onedimensional point process with usage as a function of age. The first approach has three different models. First of all, bivariate model is appealing but is not appropriate for explaining warranty claims. Next, the rest of the two models (marked point process, and counting and matching on both directions independently) are more appropriate for explaining warranty claims. However, the second one (counting and matching on both directions independently) assumes that the two variables (variables representing the twodimensions) are independent. Last of all, onedimensional point process with usage as a function of age is also promising to explain the twodimensional warranty claims. But the models or variations of them need more investigation to be applicable to real warranty claim data.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the appropriate impression technique by analyzing the superimposition of 3D digital model for evaluating accuracy of conventional impression technique and digital impression. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-four patients who had no periodontitis or temporomandibular joint disease were selected for analysis. As a reference model, digital impressions with a digital impression system were performed. As a test models, for conventional impression dual-arch and full-arch, impression techniques utilizing addition type polyvinylsiloxane for fabrication of cast were applied. 3D laser scanner is used for scanning the cast. Each 3 pairs for 25 STL datasets were imported into the inspection software. The three-dimensional differences were illustrated in a color-coded map. For three-dimensional quantitative analysis, 4 specified contact locations(buccal and lingual cusps of second premolar and molar) were established. For two-dimensional quantitative analysis, the sectioning from buccal cusp to lingual cusp of second premolar and molar were acquired depending on the tooth axis. RESULTS. In color-coded map, the biggest difference between intraoral scanning and dual-arch impression was seen (P<.05). In three-dimensional analysis, the biggest difference was seen between intraoral scanning and dual-arch impression and the smallest difference was seen between dual-arch and full-arch impression. CONCLUSION. The two- and three-dimensional deviations between intraoral scanner and dual-arch impression was bigger than full-arch and dual-arch impression (P<.05). The second premolar showed significantly bigger three-dimensional deviations than the second molar in the three-dimensional deviations (P>.05).

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis was performed by using the control volume finite-element method for design of a profile extrusion die. Because polymer melt behavior is complicated and cross-sectional shape of the profile extrusion die is changing continuously, the fluid flow within the die must be analyzed three-dimensionally. A commercially available polypropylene is used for theoretical and experimental investigations. Material properties are assumed to be constant except for the viscosity. The 5-constant modified Cross model is used for the numerical analysis. A test problem is examined in order to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Simulations are performed for conditions of three different screw speeds and three different die temperatures. Predicted pressure distribution is compared with the experimental measurements and the results of the previous two-dimensional study. The computational results obtained by using three dimensional CVFEM agree with the experimental measurements and are more accurate than those obtained by using the two-dimensional cross-sectional method. The velocity profiles and the temperature distributions within several cross-sections of the die are given as contour plots.

  • This paper describes a numerical study of three-dimensional buoyant turbulent flow in a stairwell model with three convective differencing schemes, which include the upwind differencing scheme, the hybrid scheme and QUICK scheme. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved with a two-equation turbulence model. The Boussinesq approximation is used to model buoyancy terms in the governing equations. Three-dimensional predictions of the velocity and temperature fields are presented and are compared with experimental data. Three-dimensional simulations with each scheme have predicted the overall features of the flow fairly satisfactorily. A better agreement with experimental is achieved with QUICK scheme.
