New results of dependence of magnetic field, trapped by a stack of HTS tapes, on amount of tapes in a stack are reported. Commercial GdBCO tape 12 mm width and without Cu layer was used for the research. Tape was divided in square pieces $12{\times}12mm^2$ from which stacks were formed. Filling factor of the tape was about 1.4%. Measurements were carried out for stacks with height from 5 to 250 pieces and at wide temperature range from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen. Both FC (field cooling) and ZFC (zero field cooling) cooling methods were used in the research. These two methods show matching results with good accuracy. As a result dependences of trapped magnetic flux on amount of tapes for different temperatures were received. Research shows, that with increasing height of the stack trapped magnetic field value reach saturation at about 60 tapes in a stack for low temperatures. From 60 to 100 tapes increase of magnet flux is only 5%. Thus increase amount of tapes in a stack is not profitable. Also investigation of trapped magnet field relaxation was carried out. Relaxation speed decreases with increasing amount of elements. It means that the higher the stack is, the longer trapped flux will be held in cause of the same temperature.
$[Mn_{12}O_{12}(O_2CPh-4-SMe)_{16}(H_2O)_4]{\cdot}7CH_2Cl_2$ (1), a new single-molecule magnet complex has been successfully synthesized by substitution of acetate ligand of Mn12ac with 4-(methylthio)benzoic acid. Complex 1 crystallizes into triclinic P$\overline{1}$ with a = 18.321(3) $\AA$, b = 19.011(3) $\AA$, c = 27.230(4) $\AA$, $\alpha$ = 86.973(3)$^{\circ}$, $\beta$ = 76.919(3)$^{\circ}$, $\gamma$ = 87.613(3)$^{\circ}$, and Z = 2. In complex 1, one Mn(III) ion has an abnormal Jahn-Teller elongation axis oriented at an oxide ion. Complex 1 has two out-of-phase ac susceptibility peaks in the 2-4 K and 4-7 K regions. Effective anisotropy energy barrier and pre-exponential factor are $U_{eff}$ = 45.95 K, 1/$\tau$0 = 8.6 ${\times}\;10^9s^{-1}\;for\;{\chi}_M$'' peaks in the lower temperature region and $U_{eff}$ = 59.45 K, 1/$\tau_0$ = 2.2 ${\times}\;10^8\;s^{-1}$ for $\chi_M$'' peaks in the higher temperature region. The parameters of S = 10, g = 1.87, D = -0.40 $cm^{-1}$, and E = 0.00034 $cm^{-1}$ were obtained from the M/N${\mu}_B$ vs. H/T plot of complex 1.
Current lead is a device that connects the power supply and superconducting magnets. High temperature superconductor (HTS) has lower thermal conductivity and higher current density than normal metal. For these reasons, the heat load can be reduced by replacing the normal metal of the current lead with the HTS. Conventional HTS current lead has same cross-sectional area in the axial direction. However, this is over-designed at the cold-end (4.2 K) in terms of current. The heat load can be reduced by reducing this part because the heat load is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Therefore, in this paper, heat load was calculated from the heat diffusion equation of HTS current leads with uniform and non-uniform cross-sectional areas. The cross-sectional area of the warm-end (65K) is designed considering burnout time when cooling system failure occurs. In cold-end, Joule heat and heat load due to current conduction occurs at the same time, so the cross-sectional area where the sum of the two heat is minimum is obtained. As a result of simulation, current leads for KSTAR TF coils with uniform and non-uniform cross-sectional areas were designed, and it was confirmed that the non-uniform cross-sectional areas could further reduce the heat load.
Until the discovery of universal gravitation, a magnet had been considered to be a unique and magical stuff which exhibited an interacting force between two objects separated afar. Perhaps because of this belief, magnets were used widely as a medicinal stuff in East-Asia. In the present article, the records regarding the applications of a magnet for oriental medicine in written Korean history were surveyed. The records were categorized in terms of efficacy, prescription, and clinical case of taking-medicine. The records revealed that a magnet was used as an important component in the medicine for curing kidney filtering failure. Magnet was also prescribed to heal heart problems. Typical magnet-containing medicines included the SHINRYUKTANG, JIHWANGTANG, and INSAMBAEKHOTANG. Interestingly, it was revealed that some of the kings (Hyojong, Yungjo) in the era of Josun dynasty (1392-1910) believed the efficacy of the magnet-containing medicine and took it for curing their health problems.
Implantable middle ear hearing devices(IMEHDs) have being actively studied to overcome the problems of conventional hearing aids. Vibration transducer, an output devices of IMEHDs, is attached on the ossicular chain and transmits mechanical vibration to cochlea. This approach allows us to hear more clear sound because mechanical vibration is effective to transfer high frequency acoustics, but occurs some problems such as fatigue accumulation to ossicular chian and reduction of vibration displacement caused by mass loading effect. Recently, many studies for the round window stimulation are announced, because it does not cause such problems. It have been studied by older transducers designed for attaching on ossicular chain. In this paper, we proposed a new electromagnetic transducer which consists of two magnets, three coils and a vibration membrane. The magnet assembly, magnet coupled in opposite direction, were placed in the center of three coils, and the optimum length of each coil generating maximum vibrational force was calculated by finite element analysis(FEA). The transducer was implemented as the calculated length of each coil, and measured vibration displacement. From the results, it is verified the vibration displacement can be improved by optimizing the length of coils.
Magnetic separators has been used in the mining and the recycling fields in general, and is still applied in wide variety of fields. It is classified into the equipments for separating coarse ferrous scrap from non-ferrous materials and the equipments for concentrating fine ferromagnetic particles below 3mm. Magnetic separation equipments for concentrating fine materials also falls into two categories of low intensity and high intensity magnetic separators. The former is used for ferromagnetic materials but also paramagnetic materials of high magnetic susceptibility, and the latter for paramagnetic materials of lower magnetic susceptibility. Both low and high intensity magnetic separators could be utilized either dry and wet. Recently, the High gradient magnetic separators(HGMS) used in the range of less than 0.7 tesla has been gradually replaced by the magnetic separator made of rare earth permanent magnets commercialized in the 1980s. In addition, the expansion of nanotechnology in terms of synthetic magnetic materials in the environmental and biological fields is expected to contribute positively to the development of magnetic separation technology.
As a part of the plasma control system (PCS) for the first plasma campaign of KSTAR, seven sets of fast feedback control loop for the superconducting poloidal field magnet power supply (PF MPS) have been implemented. A special real-time digital communication interface has been developed for the simultaneous exchanges of the current/voltage data from the 7 sets of 12-thyristor power supplies in a 200 microsecond control cycle. Preliminary power supply tests have been performed before actual cooldown of the device. A $29mH/50m{\Omega}$ solenoid dummy has been fabricated for a series of single power supply tests. Connectivity and response speed of the plasma control system have been verified. By changing hardware cabling, this load was also used to estimate mutual inductance coupling effects of two geometrically adjacent solenoid coils on each power supply. After the cooldown was complete, each pair of the up/down symmetric PF coils has been serially connected and tested as part of the device commissioning process. Bipolar operation and longer pulse attempts have been investigated. The responses of the coils and power supplies corresponding to the plasma magnetic controls in plasma discharges are also analyzed for the future upgrades.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of magnetic field on cellular activity of MC3T3-E1 cells. The cellular activity was monitored by alkaline phosphatase and DNA synthetic activity in control, static magnetic field and pulsed electromagnetic field groups. A static magnetic field was applied to the cell by placing one, two, three, foue, and five samarium-cobalt magnets above and below each cell plate for 24hours per day. A pulsed electromagnetic field with a frequency of 100 herz was applied for 10 hours per day. After 10 days of magnetic field exposure, there were increase of alkaline phosphatase activity in static magnetic field groups consisted of one, two and three magnetic groups. Alkaline phosphatase activities were not significantly increased in four and five magnetic groups. Application of pulsed electromagnetic field did not result in significant increase in alkaline phosphatase activity compared to control. DNA synthetic activity in both static and pulsed electromagnetic field group were not significantly different from that in control group. The result of this study suggest that magnetic field could have effect on the metabolism of bone cells related to the cellular metabolic process.
Microstructure and magnetic properties of Sm-Co sintered magnet were investigated with the variation of Zr content and their solution treatment and aging temperatures. The fraction of eutectic structure and the size of eutectic area decreased with increasing x value of cast Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ alloys. On the other hand, x=0.022 ingot had finer dendritic structure compared to the other alloys. The sintered magnet of Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ had well defined cell structure which is composed of cell boundary Sm $Co_{5}$ and cell interior S $m_2$Co/ssub 17/ phase. Cell boundary Sm $Co_{5}$ phase has 20nm thickness and its relative angle was 120$^{\circ}$ in x=0.018 and 0.022 alloys. Cell size was decreased with increasing Zr contents. But, x=0.026 alloy has diffuse cell boundary and irregular shape compared to x=0.022 and 0.018 alloys. Maximum value of coercive force and maximum energy Product were obtained from x=0.022 alloys. Optimum solution treatment temperature of Sm(C $O_{.688-x}$F $e_{.242}$C $u_{.07}$Z $r_{x}$)$_{7.404}$ alloy was 1170 $^{\circ}C$ and 1st aging temperature of two step aging process for higher coercivity was 850 $^{\circ}C$.
KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) current lead system (CLS) has a role to interconnect magnet power supply (MPS) in room temperature (300 K) and superconducting (SC) bus-line, electrically. For the first plasma experiments, it should be assembled 4 current leads (CL) on toroidal field (TF) current lead box (CLB) and 14 leads on poloidal field (PF) CLB. Two current leads, with the design currents 17.5 kA, and SC bus-lines are connected in parallel to supply 35 kA DC currents on TF magnet. Whereas, it could supply $20\;{\sim}\;26\;kA$ to each pairs of PF magnets during more than 350 s. At the cold terminals of the leads, there are joined SC bus-lines and it was constructed helium coolant control system, aside from main tokamak system, to protect heat flux through current leads and enhanced Joule heat due to supplied currents. Throughout the establishment processes, it was tested the high vacuum pumping, helium leak of the helium lines and hardwares mounted between the helium lines, flow controls for CL, and liquid nitrogen cool-down of possible parts (current leads, CL helium lines, and thermal shield helium lines for CLB), for the accomplishment of the required performances.
