  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus sp. and Saccharomyces sp. on turf quality, shoot and root growth of creeping betgrass in golf course by measuring turf color index, chlorophyll content, dry weight of shoot and root, T/R ratio and root length. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; nonfertilizer (NF), control (CF; compound fertilizer), microorganism medium(MO; CF+MO)), microorganism medium contained Fe(MO-Fe; CF+MO-Fe) and microorganisum medium contained S (MO-S; CF+MO-S). Soil properties investigated after experiment was scarcely affected by applied fertilizers in root zone of creeping bentgrass. The turf color index and chlorophyll index of MO, MO-Fe, MO-S treatment were higher than those of NF, and similar to those of CF. The turfgrass root in MO and MO-Fe treatment was longer than others. The dry weight of shoot in MO and MO-S was higher than CF and that of root in MO and MO-Fe, and dry weight of MO was increased than that of NF and CF, by 26% and 6%, respectively. AS compared with NF, T/R ratio of CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was increased, and MO and MO-Fe was similar to CF, MO-S higher. Nutrient content in CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was contained more than in NF, and it was higher in shoot. These was suggested that application of MO induced the development of quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by assisting root growth and nutrients uptake.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of developed SCB (DSCB) liquid fertilizer produced by adding N, P and K at SCB liquid fertilizer on the growth of kentucky bluegrass. Two different N sources used in DSCB were ammonium sulfate (DSCB-A) and urea (DSCB-U), respectively. Fertilizer treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control (CF; chemical fertilizer), DSCB-A1 ($200\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-A2 ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-U ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-U) and CF+SCB (CF+$250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$SCB). Every treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In kentucky bluegrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and nutrient contents were measured. Results were as follows; It was hardly affected by DSCB and SCB application in investigation of chemical properties of soil. Turf color index and chlorophyll index in DSCB and SCB treatments were increased by 1~2% and 19~24% than NF, respectively and similar to CF. As applied with DSCB and SCB, dry weight of DSCB-U and CF+SCB was increased by 36% and 10% than CF, respectively, but similar to that of OSCB-A1 and DSCB-A2. Evaluated with turf quality and growth, DSCB-U was the best in all treatment and OSCB-A1 the most efficient. These results indicated that applications of OSCB and SCB promoted turf quality and growth of kentucky bluegrass or similar to CF, so that they were expected to replace chemical fertilizers.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of developed composted liquid manure(DSCB), which was produced by adding N, P, and K to composted liquid manure(SCB), on the growth of zoysiagrass. Two different N sources used in DSCB were ammonium sulfate(DSCB-A) and urea(DSCB-U), respectively. Fertilizer treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control (CF; chemical fertilizer), DSCB-Al($200mlm^{-2}$ DSCB-A), DSCB-A2($250mlm^{-2}$ DSCB-A), DSCB-U ($250mlm^{-2}$ DSCB-U) and CF+SCB(CF+$250mlm^{-2}$ SCB). In zoysiagrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and nutrient content were measured. Turf color index and chlorophyll index in DSCB and SCB treatment were increased by 1~3% and 14~28% than those of NF, respectively, and in DSCB-A1, DSCB-A2 and CF+SCB increased by 7~12% than those of CF. As applied with DSCB and SCB, the dry weight of DSCB-A1 and DSCB-A2 was increased by 25% and 19% in than CF, respectively and their nitrogen uptake by 19% and 6%. Evaluated with turf quality and growth, DSCB-A1 was the best and the most efficient in all treatments. These results indicated that application of DSCB-A1 promoted turf quality and growth of zoysiagrass by stimulating a nitrogen uptake, so that it was expected to replace to chemical fertilizers.

  • This study was carried out to find out the effect of cool-season turfgrass overseeding onto zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonica L.) for extending green color and solving traffic problem during dormant periods. Overseeding rates of cool-season turfgrasses were $10g/m^2$ of Kentucky bluegrass(KB1), $20g/m^2$of Kentucky b1uegrass(KB2), $60g/m^2$ of perennial ryegrass(PR), $80g/m^2$ of Tall fescue(TF), and $10g/m^2$ of Kentucky bluegrass + $10g/m^2$ of perennial ryegrass mixture(KB+PR) onto 2m${\times}$2m(width${\times}$length) zoysiagrass plots with 3 replications.1 to 9-sca1e of visual quality and visual color were measured after treatment, Consequently cool-season turfgrass overseeding gave a good performances of extending the green periods and enhancing the turf grass quality. KB1 and KB2 were found to be excellent performances for visual quality and visual color compared to PR, TF, KB+PR and control. KB2 showed better turf performances than KB1 within Kentucky bluegrass overseedings. Turfgrass color was kept up for 10 months by overseeding of cool-season turfgrasses(KB1, KB2, PR, TP, KB+PR) compared to about 5~6 months by zoysiagrass(Control). The visual quality and visual color of PR and TF showed good performances during a green-up period of spring, but decreasing tendencies through the summer.Percent diseases data revealed also higher ratings for PR and TF compared to for KB1 and KB2.

  • This study was conducted to find out suitable rootzone profile, irrigation system, and turfgrass species for roof turf garden. Treatments of profile with soil amendment were Mixture I: Perlite(PL)60%+Vermiculite(VC)20%+Peatmoss(PM)20%, Mixture II: PL60%+VC 10%+PM20%+Sand(SD)10%, Mixture III: PL60%+VC20%+PM20% and Mixture IV: PL60%+VC10%+PM20%+SD10%+Styrofoam 5cm as a drain layer. To test trickle irrigation for roof garden, intervals of main pipe spacing(50cm, 100cm) and drop hole distance(15, 20, 30, 50 and 100cm)were treated, To select most suitable turfgrass species or mixture, Bermudagrass 'Konwoo', Zoysiagrass 'Konhee' and cool-season grass(Kentucky Bluegrass 80% + Perennial Ryegrass 20%, Tall Fescue 30% + KB50% + PR 20%)were tested. In particle size analysis, the soil amendments Perlite and vermiculite showed very even distribution, however, peatmoss contained mostly coarse particles with fiber over $\Phi$ 4.75mm. Under field moisture condition, vermiculite and peatmoss showed 350% water holding capacity, on the other hand, sand or Perlite showed 115% and 166%, respectively. Total weight of soil profile was 139.2kg/$m^2$ with Styrofoam drain layer without sand, which showed most lightest among treatments. Turf quality also resulted positve with Styrofoam drain layer installation. On trickle irrigation system, the proper interval of main drain pipe spacing and drop hole distance were 50cm and 50cm, respectively, In irrigation frequency, once per a day for 15 minute irrigation with 2 1/hr showed the best results on turf quality. Among turfgrass species or cool season grass mixture, warm season turfgrass fine leaf type zoysiagrass 'Konhee' and Bermudagrass 'Konwoo' showed very acceptable result on all over the treatments of rootzone and irrigation system. To apply cool season grasses for the roof garden, advanced researches may be needed to establish the proper soil amendment, rootzone profile, and irrigation system, Application of Bermudagrass 'Konwoo' for roof turf garden also needs successive tests to overcome winter injuries.

  • The objective of this experiment was to suggest the optimum cutting height for turf type mixtures{Kentucky bluegrass(Newport) 40% + tall fescue(Rebell Jr) 20% + perennial ryegrass (Palmer Ⅱ) 10% + redtop(Barricuda) 10% + red fescue(Salem) 10% + creeping bentgrass(Crenshaw) IO%}. The fields trials were conducted from 1998 to 2001 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality on the cutting heights(3, 4, and 5cm). With increasing the cutting height, the average DM yields of turf type mixtures over 3-year significantly increased, therefore the average total DM yields were obtained 11,158, 12,143 and 13,181㎏/ha at cutting height 3, 4 and 5cm(p<0.05), respectively. The CP content and OMO decreased(p<0.05), whereas the fiber contents slightly increased with increasing the cutting height. The average CPDM and DDM yields were obtained 2,012 and 8,621㎏, 2,097 and 9,461㎏, and 2,298 and 9,951㎏ at cutting height 3, 4, and 5㎝(p<0.05), respectively. The botanical compositions of Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue were maintained high as 30 ∼ 36%, but that of perennial ryegrass was maintained low as 10-15%. Most of other species were low, but redtop and creeping bentgrass among the other species made up 8∼10% and 7 ∼ 8% of botanical composition at the last 6th cutting time in 2001, respectively. In general, the level of cutting height of turf type mixtures was not more closely associated with botanical composition. The results of this experiment indicated that a 5㎝ of cutting height of turf type mixtures sown by extensive method would seemed adequate.

  • The object of this experiment was to suggest the optimum N fertilization level in Kentucky bluegrass pasture fer turf'of school ground. The field trials were conducted from 2001 to 2003 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality on the N levels(100, 150 and 200kg/ha). With increasing the N level, the average DM yield for 2 years in Kentucky bluegrass pasture significantly increased. The average total DM yields was 6,317, 8,495 and 10,361 kg/ha at N 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha level(p<0.05), respectively. CP content and DMD were significantly increased(p<0.05), whereas fibrous constituents were not detected obvious tendency, but CPDM and DDM yields were significantly increased with increasing the N levels for 2 years(p<0.05). Based on the results, considering the total DM yield and quality of herbages which incidentally produced from Kentucky bluegrass pasture in school ground, it can be suggested that the suitable application N level was 200 kg/ha.

  • In use of pesticides in golf courses has been increased steadily. Environmental concern as well as decrease in efficiency led the turfgrass management into an alternate approach of using beneficial microorganism to deal with turfgrass pests. This study was focused on the use of such microorganisms for improving cultural environment and minimizing the use of pesticides. Microorganisms antagonistic to turfgrass diseases were applied to zoysiagrass fairways and creeping bentgrass greens in Yusung country club. Tharch accumulation, disease occurrence, and other cultural environments were compared among the combinations of microorganisms and suppliemental N applications. The application of microorganisms antagonistic to turfgrass diseases improved turf resiliency. Thatch thickness was 3.03cm in the control plot but it was 2.11cm in plots treated by microorganisms, indicating significant effects of microorganism application on reduction of thatch accumulation. Number of microorganism that can decompose of cellulose was higher at the plots treated with useful microbial products and it was considered that existence of higher population of microorganisms resulted in reduction of thatch accumulation. In the evaluation of relationship between thatch accumulation and disease occurrence, greater thatch accumulation was observed at the golf courses which have been frequently infested by large patch. However, the rate of thatch accumulation varied among surveyed golf courses regardless of the year of turf establishment. Therefore, management practice which can be effective for reduction of thatch could result in large patch suppression. The application of microorganisms on the established turfgrasses reduced the occurrence rate of pythium blight and yellow path diseases, whereas occurrence of brown patch and dollar spot increased.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Actinomyces sp. and Bacillus sp., United States granular microorganisms and Japan granular microorganisms on turfgrass growth and thatch decomposing of creeping bentgrass in golf course by measuring turf color index, chlorophyll index, thatch content of soil, root length, turf density and chemical properties and thatch content of soil. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; control(CF; compound fertilizer), microorganism medium(M; CF+M), microorganism medium and livestock manure fertilizer(M-L; CF+M+LMF), microorganism medium, livestock manure fertilizer and amino acid liquid fertilizer(M-L-A; MM+LMF+ALF), United States granular microorganisms(USGM; CF+USGM), Japan granular microorganisms(CF+JGM). Soil properties investigated after experiment was scarcely affected by applied fertilizers in root zone of creeping bentgrass. The turf color index and chlorophyll index of M, M-L, M-L-A, USGM, JGM treatment were higher than those of CF. The turfgrass root in M-L treatment was longer than others. The thatch content of soil in M treatment was longer than others. The thatch content of M was decreased than that of CF by 6.8%. These was suggested that application of M induced the development of quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by assisting turfgrass growth and thatch decomposing.
