Aerodynamic effects, such as drag force and flow-induced vibration (FIV), on civil engineering structures can be minimized by optimally modifying the structure shape. This work investigates the turbulent wake of a square prism with its faces modified into a sinusoidal wave along the spanwise direction using three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques at Reynolds number $Re_{Dm}$ = 16,500-22,000, based on the nominal width ($D_m$) of the prism and free-stream velocity ($U_{\infty}$). Two arrangements are considered: (i) the top and bottom faces of the prism are shaped into the sinusoidal waves (termed as WSP-A), and (ii) the front and rear faces are modified into the sinusoidal waves (WSP-B). The sinusoidal waves have a wavelength of $6D_m$ and an amplitude of $0.15D_m$. It has been found that the wavy faces lead to more three-dimensional free shear layers in the near wake than the flat faces (smooth square prism). As a result, the roll-up of shear layers is postponed. Furthermore, the near-wake vortical structures exhibit dominant periodic variations along the spanwise direction; the minimum (i.e., saddle) and maximum (i.e., node) cross-sections of the modified prisms have narrow and wide wakes, respectively. The wake recirculation bubble of the modified prism is wider and longer, compared with its smooth counterpart, thus resulting in a significant drag reduction and fluctuating lift suppression (up to 8.7% and 78.2%, respectively, for the case of WSP-A). Multiple dominant frequencies of vortex shedding, which are distinct from that of the smooth prism, are detected in the near wake of the wavy prisms. The present study may shed light on the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of FIV control, in terms of passive modification of the bluff-body shape.

In this study, the effect of chill layers occurred in shot sleeve on the molten metal filling was analyzed through computer simulation. The behavior of chill layers with temperature variation of shot sleeve set from 200 to $280^{\circ}C$ was also investigated. The simulation results showed the chill layers set in the in-gates during the injection process change the main filling direction and cause turbulent flow pattern, resulting in porosities inside the castings. The amount of chill layers with the increasing temperature of shot sleeve was considerably reduced. Particularly, at the setting temperature of $280^{\circ}C$ by heat control unit, the biggest reduction in chill layers, excellent trimmed surface and the highest density were achieved, suggesting that as the optimal sleeve condition in aluminum high pressure diecasting, especially for highly complex parts like valve body.

Oil refineries' Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU) when in full operation may exhibit strong fluid dynamics caused by turbulent flow in the piping system that may induce vibrations in other mechanical and structural components of the Unity. This paper reports on the experimental-theoretical-computational program performed to get the vibration properties and the dynamic response amplitudes to find out alternative solutions to attenuate the excessive vibrations that were causing fatigue fractures in components of the bottle like reactor-regenerator of an FCC unit in operation in an existing oil refinery in Brazil. Solutions to the vibration problem were sought with the aid of a 3D finite element model calibrated with the results obtained from experimental measurements. A short description of the found solutions is given and their effectiveness are shown by means of numerical results. The solutions were guided by the concepts of structural stiffening and dynamic control performed by a nonlinear pendulum controller whose mechanical design was based on parameters determined by means of a parametric study carried out with 2D and 3D mathematical models of the coupled pendulum-structure system. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is evaluated in terms of the fatigue life of critical welded connections.

Although commercial PIV systems have been widely used for the non-intrusive velocity field measurement of fluid flows, they are still under development and have considerable room for improvement. In this study, a single-frame double-exposure PIV system using a high-resolution CCD camera was developed. A pulsed Nd:Yag laser and high-resolution CCD camera were synchronized by a home-made control circuit. In order to resolve the directional ambiguity problem encountered in the single-frame PIV technique, the second particle image was genuinely shifted in the CCD sensor array during the time interval dt. The velocity vector field was determined by calculating the displacement vector at each interrogation window using cross-correlation with 50% overlapping. In order to check the effect of spatial resolution of CCD camera on the accuracy of PIV velocity field measurement, the developed PIV system with three different resolution modes of the CCD camera (512 ${\times}$ 512, lK ${\times}$ IK, 2K ${\times}$ 2K) was applied to a turbulent flow which simulate the Zn plating process of a steel strip. The experimental model consists of a snout and a moving belt. Aluminum flakes about $1{\mu}m$ diameter were used as scattering particles for the liquid flow in the zinc pot and the gas flow above the zinc surface was seeded with atomized olive oil with an average diameter of 1-$3{\mu}m$. Velocity field measurements were carried out at the strip speed $V_s$=1.0 m/s. The 2K ${\times}$ 2K high-resolution PIV technique was significantly superior compared to the smaller pixel resolution PIV system. For the cases of 512 ${\times}$ 512 and 1K ${\times}$ 1K pixel resolution PIV system, it was difficult to get accurate flow structure of viscous flow near the wall and small vortex structure in the region of large velocity gradient.
Accurate prediction of a supersonic missile base drag continues to defy even well-rounded CFD codes. In an effort to address the accuracy and predictability of the base drags, the influence of grid system and competitive turbulence models on the base drag is analyzed. Characteristics of some turbulence models is reviewed through incompressible turbulent flow over a flat plate, and performance for the base drag prediction of several turbulence models such as Baldwin-Loman(B-L), Spalart-Allmaras(S-A), k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ model is assessed. When compressibility correction is injected into the S-A model, prediction accuracy of the base drag is enhanced. The NSWC wind tunnel test data are utilized for comparison of CFD and semi-empirical codes on the accuracy of base drag predictability: they are about equal, but CFD tends to perform better. It is also found that, as angle of attack of a missile with control fins increases, even the best CFD analysis tool we have lacks the accuracy needed for the base drag prediction.
A series of numerical calculations are performed in order to investigate the dispersion mechanism of toxic gaseous and solid pollutants in extremely short-term and short range. The calculations are carried out in an open space characterized by turbulent boundary layer. The simulation is made by the use of numerical model, in which a control-volume based finite difference method is used together with the SIMPLEC algorithm for the resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling problem. The Reynolds stresses are solved by two-equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model modified for buoyancy. The major parameters consider-ed in this study are temperature, velocity and Injection height of toxic gases, environmental conditions such as temperature and velocity of free stream air, and topographic factor. The results are presented and discussed in detail. The flow field is commonly characterized by the formation of a strong recirculation zone due to the upward motion of the hot toxic gas and ground shear stress. The driving force of the upward motion is explained by the effect of thermal buoyancy of hot gas and the difference of inlet velocity between toxic gas and free stream.

The oscillatory excitation with a Strouhal number of 2.65 ncar the stagnation zone of hemispherical nose model was employed to control the laminar separation bubble and the transition to turbulence. The effects of oscillatory excitation upon the separation bubble and the transition were addressed in terms of kurtosis/skewness and time-frequency analyses. The measured noise spectrum of radiated sound from the turbulent boundary layer on the axi-symmetric infinite cylinder is compared with that by Sevik's wave-number white approximations. The noise sources in TBL on axi-symmetric cylinder and the caling of their far-field sound are also discussed.
In this study, the coupled simulation of fuel injection model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code was tried to develop an algorism for predicting the effects of varying fuel injection parameter on the characteristics of fuel injection and emissions. The numerical simulations were performed using STAR-CD code in order to calculate the intake air flow, and the combustion characteristics is examined by KIVA-3V code linked with the conditional moment closure(CMC) model to predict mean turbulent reaction rate. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters shows that appropriate modification of control chamber orifice diameter, needle valve spring constant and nozzle chamber orifice diameter can significantly reduce NOx and soot emissions. Consequently, it is needed to optimize the fuel injection system to reduce the specific emissions such as NOx and soot.
Turbocharger bearings are under the circumstance of high temperature, moreover rotated at high speed. It is necessary to be designed to overcome the high temperature. So the type of oil inlet port, the inlet oil temperature and the sort of engine oil should be designed, controlled and selected carefully in order to reduce the bearing inside temperature. Therefore, in this study, the effects of the type of inlet oil port, inlet temperature and the sort of engine oil on the performance of a turbocharger bearing are to be investigated. It is found that the type of oil inlet ports, the control of inlet oil temperature and the selection of engine oil type play important roles in determining the temperature and pressure, then the friction and load of a turbocharger journal bearing at high speed operation.

The production of light metal parts using aluminum is mainly performed by die casting and squeeze casting, which directly fabricate the required shape from the liquid state. However, die casting is subject to defects such as shrinkage porosity and air trapped when molten metal enters the cavity, whilst squeeze casting also has defects due to turbulent flow in the die cavity. Both diecasting and sqeeze casting have inhomogeneous mechanical property in terms of dendritic structure during solidification. Active research has been carried out on semi-solid processing, rather than on conventional process methods such as die casting, which involve various problems. Therefore in this paper, to introduce the fundamental technology for d e design, in die casting and forging process with semi-solid materials, relationship between stress and strain of semi-solid materials, and for producing parts die design has been proposed as parameters of globulization of the microstructure and gate shape. The prevention of various defects to produce sound parts are also introduced.
