  • To evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment using nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration systems, tapwater contaminated by bacteria and nitrate nitrogen was filtered, and then the rates of removal for many kinds of contaminants were comp.ared and investigated. The rates of turbidity removal by these systems are around 80% all of them. However, nanofiltration system is the most effective as hardness removal is 80%, suspended solids 90%, total residual chlorine 90% and nitrate nitrogen 69%. Among nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and microfiltration systems, nanofiltration system is the most stable in flow rate of permeate. Comparing hollow and spiral type of ultrafiltration, microfiltration each, spiral type is more stable than hollow type owing to rinsing effect of brine. The values of pH in ultrafiltration and microfiltration systems are between 7, 0 and 7.5, and that of nanofiltration system is low to 6.2-7.0. The effectiveness of heterotrophic bacteria removal is the most excellent in the nanofiltration system.

  • Soluble manganese removal was analyzed as a function of filter media, filter depth, presence or absence of chlorination, and surface manganese oxide concentration in water treatment processes. Sand, manganese oxide coated sand (MOCS), sand+MOCS, and granular activated carbon(GAC) were used as filter media. Manganese removal, surface manganese oxide concentration, turbidity removal, and regeneration of MOCS in various filter media were investigated. Results indicated that soluble manganese removal in MOCS was rapid and efficient, and most of the removal happened at the top of the filter. When filter influent (residual chlorine 1.0mg/L) with an average manganese concentration of 0.204mg/L was fed through a filter column, the sand+MOCS and MOCS columns can remove 98.9% and 99.2% of manganese respectively on an annual basis. On the other hand, manganese removal in sand and the GAC column was minimal during the initial stage of filtration, but after 8 months of filter run they removed 99% and 35% of manganese, respectively. Sand turned into MOCS after a certain period of filtration, while GAC did not. In MOCS, the manganese adsorption rate on the filter media was inversely proportional to the filter depth, while the density of media was proportional to the filter depth.

  • For electrochemical treatment of industrial wastewater, the effects of voltage, distance between electrodes, initial pH and NaCl concentrations on removal of pollutants were investigated in a batch electrolysis system. Temperature and pH in electrochemical reactor increased with increase in supplied voltage, but no significant change in EC was found. Removal of COD, turbidity, T-N and T-P were also enhanced with increase in the voltage. On the conditions of short distances between electrodes and long electrochemical reaction times, it was found that COD and T-N were very effectively removed in the system. Regardless of the distances, more than 80% of turbidity and T-P were removed at the beginning of reaction. When initial pH of the wastewater was about 7, the highest efficiency of COD removal was found in the system. On the other hand, removal efficiency of turbidity was unlikely affected by initial pH of the wastewater. T-N removal was increased with increase in initial pH. T-P was successfully removed in the pH range of 5 to 9 with varying removal efficiency of 79 to 96% after 2 minutes of electrochemical reaction time. Addition of NaCl into the electrochemical reactor increased removal efficiency of electrochemical treatment. The highest removal efficiency of COD and T-P, turbidity and T-N was obtained at NaCl concentrations of 500mg/L, 1,000 mg/L and 500mg/L, respectively.

  • In this present study, bagasse based pulp and paper industry wastewater was treated under different operating conditions such as initial pH (6-8), temperature ($25-35^{\circ}C$) and contact time (3-7 days) by using Bacillus subtilis. Response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with Box-Behnken response surface design (BBD) was employed to investigate the effect of process variables on the responses such as turbidity, biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The experimental data were analyzed by Pareto analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the second order polynomial models were developed. Interactive effects of the process variables on the responses were studied using plotting 3D response surface contour graph and the optimum process conditions were found to be: initial pH of 7, temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and contact time of 5 days. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of turbidity, BOD and COD were found to be 85%, 93% and 80% respectively which are close agreement with real experiments. These results indicate that the treatment of bagasse based pulp and paper industry wastewater using Bacillus subtilis is an effective and novel technique.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using ozonation. for raw water, Nakdong River was used. By conducting batch ozonation test, the following results were obtained. when ozone dosage of 5mg/$\ell$was used, preozonation of raw water reduced turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC(dissolved organic carbon), UV254 absorbance, THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential) as much as 3.9NTU, 5.5mg/$\ell$, 1.15mg/$\ell$, 0.112 and 0.065mg/$\ell$, respectively. In case of postozonation of sand filtered water, water quality was also improved with decrease in turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC, UV254 absorbance and THMFP at the amount of 0.08NTU, 2.6mg/$\ell$, 0.88mg/$\ell$, 0.042 and 0.018mg/$\ell$, respectively. On the other hand, contents of dissolved oxygen increased at the level of 1.3mg/$\ell$ after preozonation process and 1.0mg/$\ell$ after postozonation process. The effect of ozone dosage was higher than that of its contact time for the removal of the pollutants.

  • The two major tannins were separated by Sephadex LH-20 and MCI-gel CHP-20 from peel of astringent persimmon fruits. Purified tannins were identified to (+)-catechin and (+)-gallocatechin by NMR, IR spectrum and FAB-mass spectrum. The removal rate of turbidity, T-N, T-P and CODcr in wastewater with lime and (+)-gallocatechin was higher than those of (+)-catechin because (+)-gallocatechin has more hydroxyl groups. As increasing concentration of tannins from peel of astringent persimmon fruits, the removal rate of turbidity, T-N, T-P and CODcr were increased. Synergistic activity by mixed tannins(catechin+gallocatechin) was also observed.

  • Coagulation is very important process in water works. The subsequent processes are directly affected by this process. Many factors such as turbidity, alkalinity, pH, hardness, total organic carbon(TOC), velocity gradient and flocculation time effect on coagulation process. Among these factors, specially TOC is being concerned target substance to be removed due to trihalomenthanes(THMs) precursor and alkalinity is being one of the major parameter for removing TOC. We have researched the consumption of coagulant with TOC alkalinity concentration of water and removal efficiency of residual TOC and turbidity with alkalinity. Furthermore we have investigated particle size distributions with velocity gradient and alkalinity. The consumption of coagulant was proportionally increased to TOC and alkalinity concentration and the removal of TOC in Nakdong river water was very difficult more than 150 mg/l in alkalinity but large morecular weight organic such as humic acid could be removed easily. Coagulation of low alkalinity water was more rapidly occured than of high alkalinity water by analyzing the particle size distributions. High alkalinity water needed higher mixing energy for a good coagulation within limited flocculation time.

  • Optimum design conditions of rapid mixing impellers for an effective Water Treatment Plant operation were experimentally studied by thorough examination of parameters, such as impeller type and detention time. which govern the removal efficiency of turbidity. It was found that the impeller type is one of the major parameters governing the economic power consumption and the efficiency of turbidity removal. The experimental results showed that not only the velocity gradient G but also a new design guide. so called mixing energy per unit volume of raw water, could be used as a design and operation guides for rapid mixing in W.T.P.

  • This paper reports on a pilot scale comparison of PACS coagulation with and without pH preadjustment. The pH of the water was adjusted with carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid. Process performance was assessed on the basis of total organic carbon(TOC), UV absorbance, turbidity and disinfection by-product(DBP) precursors. Coagulation pH appeared to be a determining factor for maximum NOM removal. The optimum coagulation pH in order to decrease TOC and turbidity were pH 7. Preadjustment of pH 7 increased TOC removal to as much as 43, 47 percent with sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide. Moreover, coagulation at pH 7 caused a reduction in UV$_{254}$, THMFP and HAAFP compared to the baseline coagulation. For preadjustment of pH 7 with carbon dioxide, the percentage of TOC, UV$_{254}$, THMFP and HAAFP shows the reduction rate of 3.8, 0.5, 4.8, 9.4% comparing to the coagulation rendition using sulfuric acid. Acid addition to depress pH during coagulation decrease Langelier Saturation Index(LSI), potentially causing increase corrosion in water distribution systems. LSI for carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid at pH 6 was -2.3, -3.3. Therefore, carbon dioxide was more effective at controlling corrosion than sulfuric acid.
