Background: Based on outstanding progresses in animal experiments, vaccines for some human tumors have been developed. However, clinical effects of these vaccines have been far below than expected. This discrepancy might come from differences between animal models and human patients with respect to immunocompetency. The immune status of mice after tumor inoculation has not been well studied, which make us cautious in interpreting and applying the results from mice to human. We evaluated cell-mediated immune responses in mice after tumor cell inoculation. Methods: Mice were inoculated with TA3Ha, CT26, or 4T1. Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses were induced 2-4 weeks after inoculation using 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene as an antigen. The relationships between the severity of DTH responses and the duration of tumor inoculation or the size of tumor mass were analyzed. Results: In T A3Ha groups, DTH response was elevated 2 weeks after inoculation, but depressed after 4 weeks, compared to the control group. When analyzed based on the sizes of tumor masses elicited, DTH responses were inversely related to the mass size, especially in those greater than 10 mm in diameter. In CT26 groups, while the duration after inoculation did not affect the severity of DTH responses, those with large mass showed depressed responses regardless the duration of inoculation. 4T1 cells grew so slowly that the size of tumor mass was small even 4 weeks after inoculation, and this group showed much higher DTH responses compared to that of tumor-free group. Conclusion: At least in an experimental setting where tumor model was induced by inoculating tumor cell lines into immunologically competent mice, the host immune response was elevated in early stage, and then depressed in late stage when the mass grew over a critical size.

Neurilemoma usually discovered incidentally, is a benign nerve-sheath tumor which has been described as a painless mass. In most cases, the size of the mass was smaller than 5cm. However, it was reported that there were masses, sometimes associated with local tenderness and pain, whose size was over 6cm. Then, we have found there is a relationship between mass size and neurologic symptoms, as well as with, postoperative complications. It is important to diagnose early and to treat it. Twenty neurilemoma patients, who were treated at Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center were analyzed using their clinical symptoms, pathologic findings, radiologic findings and complications. There was no sexual difference in tumor incidence. The anatomical locations of tumors were as follows. ; upper extremities in 15 cases(69%), axilla in 1 case(4%) and lower extremities in 6 cases(27%). Symptoms were palpable mass in 22 cases, local tenderness in 8 cases(36%), radiating pain in 6 cases(27%) and paresthesia in 6 cases(27%), Median nerve was involved most frequently(33%). There were 2 patients(10%) with multiple symptoms. Tumor enucleation was done in all cases. The size of tumors in longest axis was smaller than 2cm in 2 cases, between 2 and 4cm in 11 cases and more than 5cm in 9 cases. There was no case of malignant transformation or recurrence. In conclusion, incidence of clinical symptom and postoperative complications are increased with the size of the tumor especially over the 5cm. Preoperative MRI finding was the most accurate method of diagnosis and most helpful in determining surgical resection margin.
In this paper, we investigated the effects of the photodynamic therapy(PDT) for the tumor mass in mice. In the experimental method, we divided the mice into two control and test group which HepG2 and HeLa cell line induced cancer mass in mice. Photofrin was administered to the tumor-bearing mouse, followed 30 hours later by 630nm and 650nm laser light exposure. After photodynamic therapy we analyzed the two mice group for the tumor mass size, tumor growth, tumor cell necrosis, pathological anatomy change. According to the results, tumor cell necrosis was shown in the tissues which the reduce size of tumor and tumor cell necrotic change according to the irradiation time and light dose amount. The considerable difference, however, between the 630nm and 650nm wavelength was not found for the tumor cell necrotic change and other damage of normal tissue was not found.
Mesothelioma is a primary tumor of the pleura. There are two forms of mesotheliomas; diffuse form and localized form. The majority of localized mesotheliomas are benign, but the tumor with pedicle recur at 20% after removal of it. Malignant localized fibrous mesothelioma is differential diagnosed pathologically and clinically with diffuse mesothelioma. Symptoms of localized mesothelioma are generally related to the size of the tumor. We presented one case of malignant localized fibrous mesothelioma. The patient was 32 years old female and chief complaints were dyspnea and dry cough. Sputum cytology and needle lung biopsy were not able to diagnose definitely the tumor. Explothoracotomy was carried out for definite tissue biopsy. At the time of operation, huge adult head size mass was in the right thoracic cavity. The surface of the mass was nodular, multilobular and had hard consistency. Pedicle was formed above first rib and its diameter was 4.5cm. There was no adhesion except to RUL. Frozen biopsy suggested mesothelioma. Extirpation of the mass, right upper lobectomy. and partial pleurectomy were carried out.
The author have diagnosed and treated the mixed tumor having been originated from submaxillary gland in 43 years old korean woman. The mixed tumor was enucleated by means of total resection of tumor mass and the involved submaxillary gland. The enucleated mixed tumor mass was 6×6, 5×6.7Cm. in size, and the postoperative prognosis was excellent good, and I convinced that the lesion had been completely healed.
The primary cardiac tumor was considered as a form of disease with poor prognosis in the past and it was hardly diagnosed before post mortem autopsy. But recent development of diagnostic procedure and the cardiac surgery using extracorporeal circulation increased the accuracy of diagnosis and the opportunity of successful treatment. The authors present two cases of left atrial myxoma which experienced during recent 4 years between 1979 and 1982. A 33 year old woman admitted with severe shortness of breath, generalized edema, ascites and the evidence of hepatopathy resulted from right sided heart failure. Preoperatively, the patient was treated with conservative medication to improve general condition for a few days. The tumor mass was removed successfully under the cardiopulmonary bypass. She, however, died of myocardial dysfunction showing low blood pressure. The tumor mass weighed 22gm and measured 5.2x4.5x3.6 cm in size. A 60 year old man admitted with shortness of breath on exertion and an episode of fainting. Following the removal of tumor mass under the cardiovascular bypass, the clinical course was satisfactory with no complication. The tumor mass weighed 105gm and measured 9x4x5 cm in size.
An 11 years old Irish Setter bitch was euthanlzed and necropsied because of clinical findings such as severe purulent nasal discharge and formation of large tumor mass, 8 ${\times}$8cm in size, in the abdominal cavity. A complete unilateral mastectomy had been carried out twice 14 and 22 months before necropsy. The surgically removed masess of the mammary glands had been diagnosed as malignant mixed tumor in each time. Grossly, tumor masses were observed in nasal cavity, infralumbar lymph node, lung, abdominal cavityn and brain. Microscopic findings of the surgically removed masses consisted of tumor epithelial cells, tumor hyaline cartilage-like structures and abundant connective tissues. The mass of the lymph node had similar microscopic features to those of the original malignant mixed tumor of the mammary glands. The tumor osseous tissue and osteoid were observed in the abdominal cavity, lung, and brain. Myoepithelial cells were frequently found on association with the metastatic tumors. From the results, it was concluded that malignant mixed tumor of the mammary glands metastasized to the infralunbar lymph node, abdominal cavity, lung and brain. In addition, the observation in this study supported two theories at the same time that the bone in malignant mixed tumor arises by endochondral ossification of the cartilage formed by the myoepithelial cells and arises by intramembranous ossification of stromal connective tissue or transformed myeopithelial cells. Solid carcinoma of the nasal epielia and granulosa cell tumor were also diagnosed in a mass of the nasal cavity and of the ovaries respectively.

Matrix metalloproteinase(MMP) is the proteolytic enzyme of the extracellular matrix. MMPs play a role in the invasion and metastasis of malignant tumor, but it is not known whether the expression of MMPs in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is related to the prognostic factors of this tumor. In this study, 32 paraffin-embedded tumor specimens were examined immunohistochemically using monoclonal antibodies of MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-10 and MMP-13. The possible relationships between the expressions of the MMPs and TNM staging, the differentiation of tumor cells, size of tumor mass and lymph node metastasis were anlaysed statistically. The results were as follows. 1. The expression of MMP-2 increased according to TNM staging (P<0.05) and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05) and the expression of MMP-2 was not affected by the differentiation of tumor cells or tumor size. 2. The expression of MMP-3 increased with increasing tumor size (P<0.05). However it was not related to TNM staging, the differentiation of tumor cells or lymph node metastasis. 3. The expression of MMP-10 was unrelated to TNM staging, differentiation of tumor cells, lymph node metastasis or tumor size. 4. The expression of MMP-13 increased as tumor size increased (P<0.05). However it was not related to TNM staging, the differentiation of tumor cells or lymph node metastasis. We concluded that the expression patterns of MMP-2, MMP-3, and MMP-13 may play a role in the diagnosis, treatment plan and prognostic evaluation of malignant tumors of the tongue.
Purpose: Laparoscopic wedge resection of gastric submucosal tumor may be difficult in case of the endophytic mass or the mass located unreachable area such as cardia, and intragastric approach can be useful. We would present the experiences of the intragastric wedge resection. Materials and Methods: There were 7 patients diagnosed as gastric submucosal tumor and underwent the intragastric wedge resection at Surgery, Chungnam National University Hospital. We reviewed medical record. Results: There were 3 male and 4 female. Mean age was 65 years-old (57~73). Mean body mass index was 26.28 kg/$m^2$ (21.28~35.30). Location of lesions was 4 cardia, 2 fundus and 1 midbody, respectively. Mean operation time was 83.6 minutes (70~105). All patients were healed without any complication. Mean postoperative hospital stay was 5.4 days (4~6). Mean size was 2.7 cm (2.3~3.8). Pathologic finding was 5 gastrointestinal stromal tumor and 2 leiomyoma. Conclusions: The single incision intragastric wedge resection of gastric submucosal tumor is feasible and acceptable, especially in mass of gastric upper part.
A 3-year-old male Tosa was presented the severe dyspnea, emaciation and dehy dration. By echocardiograpy, right ventricle was found to be a mobile mass dynamically occluding the right ostium atrioventriculare in the systolic phase. At necropsy, 14 days after ultrasonography multiple tumor masses of various size were observed in the heart base, right ventricular lumen, myocardium, lung and liver. Histopathologically, the tumor cells, arranged in sheets or nests, were diagnosed as metastatic intracavitary cardiac aortic body tumor
