Chungbuk native Polygnatum stenophyllum Max. for used in this experiment were regional groups that collected at Cheongju and Jecheon, and then classified by seed tuber weights as 15, 30, 45, 60g. Shoot emergency time was faster about $4\sim7$days in Chengju regional group than that of Jecheon. In different seed tuber weights, shoot emergency time was the faster, seed tuber weight was the heavier. All of growth factors such as plant height, stem length and leaf length were worse Cheongju regional group in compared with that of Jecheon but leaf width was not different. Yields per 10a in both of Cheongju and Jechon were 1,600kg. After due consideration to seed tuver cost, approximately 40g is regarded as the most suitable weight for cultivation of Polygnatum stenophyllum Max.
Chinese yam (Dioscorea Opposita Thanb) has been cultivated as medicinal crop and food. The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of tuber head origin and fertilizer application method on its agronomic characters of shoot and root tuber to get some imformation on its cultivation. The tuber head cultivated were cut from normal or branched root tuber. 37-28-32-2000 : N-P-K-Humus(Kg/10a) by dispersal but 30% N reduction of Con(RN) or strip application on the two-side of hill(SRN), were applied but N and K were given by the above method with the rate of 40% in March, 30% in June and 30% in July. Agronomic characteristics related to shoot and root tuber were measured and their relationship was analyzed. Tuber head origin had no effect on emergence rate, vine length, branch and node of vine, while emergence date of the tuber head from the normal root which showed the greatest emergence rate, vine length and node in Con treatment was earlier than the others. The tuber head from the normal root, furthermore, had greater length and diameter of root tuber harvested from the field and fresh weight per plant of per 10a compared to the tuber head from the branched root, whereas in both the normal and the branched tuber head RN had the worst result in the characters related to tuber yield except tuber diameter. The tuber head from the normal root produced heavier root tuber than that from the branched tuber and SRN had the best economic yield among the application methods, which resulted from production of less branched root tubers and their rate. In both the normal and the branched tuber head, moreover, yield per plant and economic yield were positively correlated to tuber length but negatively done to number. of branch of vine.
This study was conducted to investigate the growth rate and hematological changes of the rats when supplemented with the powdered tubers of chufa(Cyperus esculentus) for four weeks. Nutritional composition of the powdered tuber of chufa is crude lipid(22.3%), crude protein(7.0%), crude fiber(8.8%), ash(5.1%), nitrogen free extract(48.9%) and water(7.9%), respectively. Sixteen Sprague-Dawley male $rats(173.1\pm3.8$ g) were randomly divided into two groups, control group and chufa group. Rats in control group were fed with American Institute of Nutrition(AIN)-76 diet and rats in chufa group were fed with modified AIN-76 diet contained the powdered tubers of chufa at the proportion of 26% of total diet in order to substitute the oil content of AIN-76 diet. Final body weight, gain of body weight and feed intake of rats in chufa group were larger than those of rats in control group significantly. But feeding efficiency of rats in chufa group was less than that of rats in control group significantly. All hematological values such as hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit and serological values such as glucose, total protein, albumin, AST, ALT, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglyceride were not significantly different between control and chufa group, respectively. Thus powdered tuber of chufa showed good tastefulness and did not provoke any adverse effect to the health indicators of rats. Therefore tuber of chufa would be used as new adequate feed resource for animals and possibly as suitable food resource for humans.

This study investigated the quality characteristics of noodles containing roasted Liriopis tuber. Roasted Liriopis tuber powder (LTP) was added in different amounts based on wheat flour (1%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 9%). Cooked noodles containing LTP exhibited significantly lower values for weight, volume, and water absorption; in contrast, higher values were exhibited for turbidity. The Hunter L value (for lightness) of uncooked and cooked noodles decreased but the a value (for redness) and b value (for yellowness) increased with the addition of Liriopis tuber. Textural properties (springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and brittleness) measured with a texture analyzer significantly decreased with the addition of Liriopis tuber. From the sensory evaluation results, noodle containing 7% Liriopis tuber was considered the best. To improve the quality of noodle containing 7% LTP, activated gluten was added at different percentages of flour (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%). Cooked noodles containing activated gluten exhibited significantly higher values for weight, volume, and water absorption; in contrast, lower values for turbidity were exhibited. In addition, the textural properties significantly increased with the addition of activated gluten. From the sensory evaluation results, noodle containing 3% activated gluten was considered the best. In conclusion, noodle with 7% LTP and 3% activated gluten exhibited the most desirable qualities.

Aconiti Tuber is the root of Aconitum sp (Ranunclaceae) which has been considered as one of the most important medicinal plant having cordiotonic, diuretic and analgesic effect. On the other hand, it has been known that Aconiti Tuber contained toxic agent, aconitine alkaloids so that only processed Aconiti Tubers have been used as herbal drug traditionally. For the safety evaluation of processed Aconiti Tuber, quantitative determination of aconitine and acute, subacute toxicity test were performed on 5 commercial processed Aconiti Tubers. Arapid and precise method using HPLC has been developed for the separation and determination of aconitine. Samples were extracted with hydrochloric acid (pH3) and hot water decoction. In case of d-HCL extracts, the contents of aconitine were from 0.08 mg/g to trace. But in case of hot water decoction extracts, the contents of aconitine were not detected. For the investigation of Aconiti Tuber toxicity in rats, hot water decoction samples and methanol extracts were tested. 1) Acute toxicity test Hot water decoction sample and methanol extracts from Aconiti Tuber did not show any toxic effects in rats by an oral administration. $LD_50values of 2 extracts were above 10.0 g/kg. 2) Subacute toxicity study In the repeated administration study, hot water decoction samples were given orally to Sprague-Dawlay rats for 2 week at daily doses of 5.0 g/kg. The results are as follows; No toxic manifestation, body weight changes and lethality were observed during wxperimental period. There were no significant changes in serum enzyme activities such as GOT, GPT, LDH, ALP between treated and control groups. However CPK values were decreased in the Subuja-treated group. (P<0.01). In addition, no gross and microscopic changes were noted in Aconiti Tuber-treated groups.
This study was conducted to increase the productivity and quality of C. auriculatum Royle ex Wight according to the various ridge height. The higher ridge height increased the vine length, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, chlorophyll content, and leaf dry weight; however, the lower ridge height increased the stem diameter and branch numbers. The tuber number and length was increased at less than 20cm of ridge height, but the overall growth was retarded in the treatment of over 20cm ridge height. The tuber diameter was also thicker in the lower ridge. The rootlet ratio among the non-commercial tuber was increased in the 20cm and 30 cm ridge, and the decayed tuber ratio was increased in the lower ridge. The yield of tuber has increased with 3% and 11% in the 20cm and 30cm ridge height compared to 10cm ridge(515kg/10a).
This work was conducted to investigate the variation of growth and yield among three generations ($TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$) in the field cultivation of virus-free sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) plants. Virus-free generations of three cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shinhwangmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultivated with $75{\times}25cm$ planting density on May 20th, covered with black vinyl film. At 30 days after planting, vine growth in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant, and vine length in $TC_0$ showed the highest growth among treatments. At harvesting time after 120 days, vine diameter, number of node, and number of branch in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ were more increased than farmer's plant, but were not statistically significant. Fresh weight of shoot in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant, but was not statistically significant among generations or cultivars. Number of tuber per plant and mean weight of tuber in $TC_0$ and $TC_1$ showed significant increasement, but that in $TC_2$ did not show significant difference as compared to the farmer's plant. Weight of tuber per plant in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant. Marketable yield, percentage of marketable tuber, and percentage of small tuber (40 to 200g) in $TC_0$, $TC_1$, and $TC_2$ was significantly increased as compared to the farmer's plant. The large tuber over 300g showed the lowest percentage in $TC_0$. Marketable yield in $TC_2$ was significantly decreased as compared to $TC_0$, and was not significantly different as compared to the farmer's plant. Marketable yield in 'Matnami' was highest among cultivars. From this results, Farmers are required to renew every three years to maintain the yield and quality of virus-free plants. However, the exchange period of virus-free plants is desirable to renew every 2 or 3 years according to the degree of virus reinfection.
Objectives : We have studied to know analgesic effects of the combination of Aconitum Cilliare Tuber with honey in the models of peripheral neuropathic pain. Methods : Neuropathic pain model was made by ligating left 5th lumbar spinal nerve. After 3 days, combination of Aconitum Ciliare Tuber and honey extract was administrated each alternate day. Administration was divided three groups, that is NP-OA1(0.06 mg/ml), NP-OA2(0.24 mg/ml), and NO-OA3(0.96 mg/ml). After that, we examined the withdrawl response of neuropathic rats legs by von Frey filament and acetone stimulation. And also we examined c-Fos, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase(GPT) and change of weight. Results : Mechanical allodynia in NP-OA1 groups were significantly decreased compared with the control group. Cold allodynia in all experimental groups were no significant differences with the control group. c-Fos protein expression on the central grey, all experimental groups were lower than that of control groups. But, there were no statistically significant differences. Change of weight in all experimental groups were significantly increased compare with the control group. In blood serum GOT in NP-OA1, NP-OA2 groups were significantly decreased compare with the control group. In blood serum GPT in all experimental groups were no significant difference with the control group. Conclusions : We had noticed that the combination of Aconitum Ciliare Tuber and honey decreased mechanical allodynia in the model of neuropathic pain compared with the control group and it has not efficacy in elevation of GOT, GPT and weight loss etc., the element of which becomes damage to liver. This study can be proposed that Aconitum Ciliare with Honey may be applicable to neuropathic pain in clinic. But it is reliability not that cold allodynia and c-Fos expression have effectively to control pain. Therefore we have to follow up about that.
Small-sized tuber of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) is more preferred by Korean consumers, because it is convenient to eat with hands, and can easily be steamed or roasted in small pan as a healthy snack for a small family. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of high-density plantings and harvesting times on production of smallsized tuber (50~200 g). Four varieties ('Annobeny', 'Daeyumi', 'Shinzami', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were planted in 2-row zigzag high-density planting ($75{\times}30cm$, A; $75{\times}25cm$, B) and 1-row planting ($75{\times}25cm$, control) covered with black vinyl film on May 23th, 2014. Marketable yields and small-sized tuber yields were compared between 120- and 150-day harvesting. Vine length and fresh weight per plant were significantly decreased in 2-row planting A and B plots compared to the control at 120 days after planting. Weight of tuber per plant, mean weight of tuber and number of tuber per plant were significantly decreased in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots than in the control. Marketable yields per 10a were increased by 17% ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 8% ($2.6ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 120-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control ($2.4ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$), and those were largely increased by 29% ($4.0ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and 26% ($3.9ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) in 150-day harvesting than in the control ($3.1ton{\cdot}10a^{-1}$). Proportions of small size tuber (50~200 g) were increased by about 65% in 150-day harvesting of A and B plots compared to the control (55.3%). Small-size tuber yield and marketable yield were highly increased in 150-day harvesting of 2-row zigzag high-density planting A ($75{\times}30cm$).

Two field experiments were carried out in 2002 to evaluate effects of the sizes of tubers produced through a wick-based hydroponics on growth and yield of seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L. 'Dejima'). Nine sizes of seed tubers (<1, 1~3, 3~5, 5~7, 7~10, 10~20, 20~30, 30~50, and 50~80 g) were used in spring crop. In fall crop, however, tubers except for the 1 g and 50~80 g wereused with tubers 7 and 15 g produced through aeroponics. Emergence rate greatly increased as tuber size was increased up to 10~20 g and then leveled off in both croppings. The number of days from planting to emergence in spring crop was about 34 days regardless of tuber size, while that in fall crop decreased from 34 to 16 days as tuber size increased from 1~3 to 30~50 g. The number of stems per plant, stem length and diameter, and leaf size tended to increase with tuber size. As the seed tuber size increased up to 10~20 g, the number of tubers per plant, average tuber weight, total and seed tuber yields linearly increased and then slowly increased with seed tuber size. Total and seed potato yields were not significantly different between tubers produced through a wick-based hydroponics and an aeroponics when similar sized tubers were planted in the fall cropping.
