The U-frame concept to assess the stability of chords of Warren-truss bridges with independent cross-beam decks

  • Analytical methods for assessment of the out-of-plane buckling of unbraced top chords of truss bridges may look obsolete while comparing them to finite element analysis. However they are, usually, superior when rapid assessment is necessary. Analytical methods consider the top chord as a bar on elastic supports provided by bracing (Holt, Timoshenko). Correct assessment of the support elasticity (stiffness) is crucial. In the case of truss bridge spans of traditional structural layout (cross-beams at the truss chord nodes only), the elasticity may be set based on the analysis of the, so called, U-frame stiffness. Here the analyses consider the U-frame itself (a pair of verticals and a cross-beam) or the U-frame with adjacent diagonals or the pair of diagonals (in the absence of verticals) and the members of the bottom chord in the adjacent panels. For all the cases, the stability analysis of the chord as a bar in compression is necessary. Unfortunately, the method cannot be applied to contemporary truss bridges without verticals, that usually have independent cross-beam decks (the cross-beams attached to truss chords at their nodes and between them). This is the motivation for the analysis resulting in the method of setting the stiffness of the equivalent U-frame for the aforementioned truss bridges. Truss girders of both, gussetless and gusseted, joints are taken into account.

Seismic analysis of steel structure with brace configuration using topology optimization

  • Seismic analysis for steel frame structure with brace configuration using topology optimization based on truss-like material model is studied. The initial design domain for topology optimization is determined according to original steel frame structure and filled with truss-like members. Hence the initial truss-like continuum is established. The densities and orientation of truss-like members at any point are taken as design variables in finite element analysis. The topology optimization problem of least-weight truss-like continuum with stress constraints is solved. The orientations and densities of members in truss-like continuum are optimized and updated by fully-stressed criterion in every iteration. The optimized truss-like continuum is founded after finite element analysis is finished. The optimal bracing system is established based on optimized truss-like continuum without numerical instability. Seismic performance for steel frame structures is derived using dynamic time-history analysis. A numerical example shows the advantage for frame structures with brace configuration using topology optimization in seismic performance.

Topology optimization of bracing systems using a truss-like material model

  • To minimize the compliance of frame, a method to optimize the topology of bracing system in a frame is presented. The frame is first filled uniformly with a truss-like continuum, in which there are an infinite number of members. The frame and truss-like continuum are analysed by the finite element method altogether. By optimizing the distribution of members in the truss-like continuum over the whole design domain, the optimal bracing pattern is determined. As a result, the frame's lateral stiffness is enforced. Structural compliance and displacement are decreased greatly with a smaller increase in material volume. Since optimal bracing systems are described by the distribution field of members, rather than by elements, fewer elements are needed to establish the detailed structure. Furthermore, no numerical instability exists. Therefore it has high calculation effectiveness.

  • This study shows details of a specific space truss frame structure devised to carry out maintenance and repair temporary works in tunnels. The purpose of this study is to verify structural safety and function of the innovative truss structure through an analysis tool, i.e.. ABAQUS, which is a suite of software application for finite element analysis and computer aided engineering. And then optimized size, i.e., thickness and diameter of truss members is evaluated in practice. In this study, construction methods in the temporary works are additionally represented by using the new space truss frame structure.

  • The goal of this study is to investigate structural analysis and behaviors of an innovative aerial work platform truss frame whose ductility is improved by using high strength-steel UL-700. The present space truss frame can move or stop through tunnels for maintenance constructions by automatic facilities and workmanship within standardized limited building lines of tunnel. Most of all, this method overcomes problematic, which is to block cars during construction periods, seriously, of typical methods like as using truck and scaffolds for tunnel maintenance. According to evaluated appropriate design results of space truss frames of numerical examples by using a commercial MIDAS GEN program, it is verified that design parameters such as layered size, cross-sectional size, and steel material of the present space truss frame are determined to depend on characteristics such as lanes or shape of road tunnels.

  • We present optimum design for truss and frame structures subject to constraints on stresses, displacement, and natural frequency. The optimum design procedure is used discrete and continuous design variables and Genetic Algorithms. Genetic Algorithms is used the method of Elitism and penalty parameters in order to improved fitness in the reproduction process, and optimum design is used steel(W-section) and pre-made discrete cross-section. Truss and frame structures optimization examples are used for 10-Bar truss, 25-Bar truss, 1-bay 2-story frame, 1-bay 7-story frame, and these examples are employed to demonstrate the availability and serviceability of Genetic Algorithms for solving optimum design of truss and frame.

  • Plane steel portal frames, with pitched roof, exposed to fire, are examined. First, a determinate frame is analysed by hand. For flexible columns and shallow roof, snap-through occurs before plastic hinges mechanism is formed. An indeterminate frame with shorter columns and taller roof is also analysed by hand. Then, the same frame is simulated by a truss and a nonlinear static analysis is performed by use of a short computer program. The results of computer analysis by use of truss model are compared with those of analysis by hand and a satisfactory approximation between them is observed.

Cap truss and steel strut to resist progressive collapse in RC frame structures

  • In order to improve the efficiency of the Reinforced Concrete, RC, structures against progressive collapse, this paper proposes a procedure using alternate path and specific local resistance method to resist progressive collapse in intermediate RC frame structures. Cap truss consists of multiple trusses above a suddenly removed structural element to restrain excessive collapse and provide an alternate path. Steel strut is used as a brace to resist compressive axial forces. It is similar to knee braces in the geometry, responsible for enhancing ductility and preventing shear force localization around the column. In this paper, column removals in the critical position at the first story of two 5 and 10-story regular buildings strengthened using steel strut or cap truss are studied. Based on nonlinear dynamic analysis results, steel strut can only decrease vertical displacement due to sudden removal of the column at the first story about 23%. Cap truss can reduce the average vertical displacement and column axial force transferred to adjacent columns for the studied buildings about 56% and 61%, respectively due to sudden removal of the column. In other words, using cap truss, the axial force in the removed column transfers through an alternate path to adjacent columns to prevent local or general failure or to delay the progressive collapse occurrence.

  • In domestic construction industry, now demand for airport facilities, gymnastic facilities, mass meeting facilities, sales facilities is increasing. Because of this, demand for huge space is also increasing. In making huge space, existing PEB(Pre-Engineered Building) and Pipe Truss, As span is lager and larger, steel weight is increasing and hard to apply for large span. For solving this problem, Many program was proposed, and in that Space Frame was rising. But in domestic construction there are very rare practical use for Space Frame. In this study, we wish to introduce Space Frame that has several advantages in construction expense, construction time, constructibility and also with analyzing example for applying Space Frame, wish to investigate characteristic of Space Frame. Go forward better, through comparison of other different old method and basic character of Space Frame, confirm advantage of Space Frame that have infinite development possibility and revitalize the Space Frame in domestic study and further more wish to raise practical use for Space Frame.
