Preparation and Physical Properties of Two-Component Polyurethane Coatings Containing Alkyd Modified Polyesters (알키드 변성폴리에스테르를 함유하는 2성분계 폴리우레탄 도료의 제조와 도막물성)

  • Alkyd modified polyester was synthesized by the polycondensation of 1,4-butanediol, trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, and the intermediate obtained by the esterification of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid(THA) and trimethylolpropane, where the contents of THA as a component of alkyd polyol in the intermediate were changed according to 10, 20, and 30wt%, respectively. Two-component polyurethane coatings were prepared by blending the synthesized alkyd modified polyester with Desmodur L-75 as a component of polyisocyanate. Various tests for coating properties with the prepared coatings show that high fineness of grind of $8^-$point, short drying time of 2~3 hours, and long pot-life of 18~23 hours were observed with the content of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid.

UV-Curable Fluorinated Crosslinkable Polyurethane-Acrylates for Marine Antifouling Coatings

  • To prepare UV-curable polyurethane-acrylate oligomer, NCO-terminated urethane prepolymers with trimethylolpropane, [TMP; 0 (0), 0.1 (0.021) and 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction)] as crosslinkable tri-functional chain extender were end-capped with pentaerythritol triacrylate [PETA; 2.0 (0.400), 1.7 (0.354) and 1.4 (0.304) mole (mole fraction)] with one hydroxyl group/three vinyl functionalities. The stable as-formulated UV-curable polyurethane-acrylates [stable mixtures of PETA-capped oligomer/reactive acrylic monomer diluents without/with heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA; 0, 6 and 9 wt%)] were formed up to 0.2 (0.043) mole (mole fraction) of TMP content in the prepolymer, while homogeneous-mixing failed at 0.3 (0.068) mole (mole fraction), in which the crosslink density in NCO-terminated urethane prepolymer was too high to enable the formation of stable mixture. This study examined the effect of TMP/PETA molar ratio and heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate (PFA) content (wt%) on the properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylates as marine antifouling coating materials. The properties of UV-cured polyurethane-acrylate were found to be significantly dependent on the crosslinkable TMP/PETA ratio and PFA content. With the increasing of the TMP and PFA contents, the contact angles increased, and consequently the surface tension decreased. The adhesion of algae/barnacles to PFA contained film samples were found to be sufficiently weak to allow their easy removal. These results suggest that the UV-cured samples containing PFA have strong potential as coating materials for antifouling applications.

Fabrication of Polymeric Microcapsules in a Microchannel using Formation of Double Emulsion (마이크로채널 내 이중유화 액적 형성을 통한 마이크로캡슐 제조)

  • In this study, we present simple microfluidic approach for the synthesis of monodisperse microcapsules by using droplet-based system. We generate double emulsion through single step in the microfluidic device having single junction while conventional approaches are limited in surface treatment for the generation of double emulsion. First, we have injected disperse fluid containing FC-77 oil and photocurable ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) and water containing 3 wt% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as continuous phase into microfluidic device. Under the condition, we easily generate double emulsion with high monodispersity by using flow focusing. The double emulsion droplets are transformed into microcapsules under the UV irradiation via photopolymerization. In addition, we control thickness of double emulsion's shell by controlling flow rate of ETPTA. We also show that the size of double emulsions can be controlled by manipulation of flow rate of continuous phase. Furthermore, we synthesize microcapsules encapsulating various materials for the application of drug delivery systems.

Resistive Humidity Sensor Using New N-Methacryloyl-N'-ethyl-N'-propyl Piperazinium Bromide Monomer and Their Properties (새로운 N-Methacryloyl-N'-ethyl-N'-propyl Piperazinium Bromide 단량체를 사용한 습도센서 및 그들의 특성 조사)

  • New humidity-sensitive monomer, N-methacryloyl-N'-ethyl-N'-propyl piperazinium bromide (MANEPPB) was prepared by the quaternization reaction of N-methacryloyl-N'-ethyl piperazine (MANEP) with 1-bromopropane. Polyelectrolytes derived from the copolymers composed of MANEPPB/MMN/AA=60/35/5, 70/25/5, 80/15/5, 90/5/5 and 95/0/5 were prepared for the humidity-sensitive membranes, which were fabricated on the gold electrode by dipping method and were crosslinked by reacting copolymers with aziridine crosslinker, trimethylolpropane tris(2-methyl-1-aziridinopropionate) (TTAP). When the resistance dependences on the relative humidity of the sensors were measured, it was found that the resistance varied three orders of magnitude between 20 and 90%RH, which was satisfied with the requirement for the common humidity sensor operating at ambient humidity. Their hysteresis, temperature dependence, frequency dependence, response and recovery time and water durability were measured and evaluated as a humidity-sensing membrane.

  • In this study, polybutadiene based di-functional urethane acrylate oligomer (PB-UAO) were synthesized from polybutadiene diol and isophorone diisocyanate. And then, pressure sensitive adhesive films were prepared by mixing with synthesized oligomer, tri-functional acrylate monomer (Tris(2-acryloyloxyethyl) isocyanurate (TAOEIC) or Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) or Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA)), mono-functional acrylate monomer (Stearyl acrylate) and UV initiators. Effects of types and contents of trifunctional acrylate monomers on peel strength, tensile strength, elongation, thermal stability and water absorption property were studied. As the contents of tri-functional acrylate monomer increased, and as the molecular weight of tri-functional acrylate monomer decreased, peel strength, elongation and water absorption showed a tendency to decrease whereas tensile strength and thermal stability showed a tendency to increase.

  • Two-component polyurethane flame retardant coatings were prepared by blending phosphate-containing modified polyesters(PMPEs) and TDI-adduct. PMPEs were synthesized by polycondensation of dimethyl phenylphosphonate, a flame retardant component, with 1,4-butanediol, adipic acid, and trimethylolpropane. The content of dimethyl phenylphosphonate was varied 10, 15, and 20wt% for the reaction. Various physical properties of these new flame retardant coatings were comparable to non-flame retardant coatings. Coatings with 20wt% dimethyl phenylphosphonate did not burn during the vertical burning test.

  • One-step seeded polymerization was used to prepare $7{\sim}10{\mu}m$ of crosslinked monodisperse spheres with four crosslinking agents using $4.68{\mu}m$ poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) seed particles in aqueous-alcoholic media in the absence of the swelling process. The crosslinking agents used were ethylene glycol dimethacrylate(EGDMA), allyl methacrylate(AMA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate(TMPTMA). The effects of the type and concentration of the crosslinking agents on the swelling, pore size, thermal property of the networks and morphology of the particles were studied. The chemical structures and concentrations of the crosslinking agents affected both the swelling ratio and the porosity of the networks. In addition, the chemistry of the reactive vinyl group and chain length of the crosslinking agents affected the stability of the monodisperse particles of the ultimate morphology.

  • Conventional additives were added to a newly synthesized base oil to create synthetic lubricants. Commercial polyol ester prepared in this laboratory were obtained as esterification of 1,1,1-trimethylol propane and respectively. This newly synthesized base oil had a variable chemical structure that could achieved the following properties; oxidation or thermal stability, low temperature fluidity, and higher flash points. When compared with commercial mineral lubricants, the synthetic lubricants show superior thermal and oxidation stability, and anti-wear properties.

  • Two-component polyurethane (PU) flame-retardant coatings were prepared by blending tribromo modified polyesters ($TBAO_s$) and isocyanate.$TBAO_s$ were synthesized by condensation polymerization of tribromoacetic acid, a flame-retardant component, with 1,4-butanediol, adipic acid, and trimethylolpropane. The content of tribromoacetic acid was varied by 10, 20, and 30 wt% for the reaction. Various physical properties of these new flame-retardant coatings were comparable to nonflame-retardant coatings. Coatings with 20 wt% tribromoacetic acid did not burn during the vertical burning test.

  • An intermediate, tetramethylene bis (orthophosphate), was prepared by the esterification of pyrophosphoric acid and l,4-butanediol. Then pyrophosphoric-containing modified polyesters (ATTBs) were synthesized by polycondensation of tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate), trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, and l,4-butanediol. The content of l,4-butanediol was varied from 10 to 20wt% for the reaction. The increase of the amount of l,4-butanediol in the synthesis of ATTBs resulted in increase in average molecular weight and decrease in kinematic viscosity owing to the excellent flowability and reactivity of l,4-butanediol.
