  • To establish an accurate asbestos analysis method for workplace samples, chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite asbestos fibers were analyzed for their morphology, atomic content and electron diffraction patterns. The morphology of asbestos fiber was evaluated in $10,000{\times}$ magnification. The atomic contents was analyzed by X-ray analyzer (TEM-EDX). Asbestos fibers were further assessed using electron diffraction (ED) patterns to provide an additional criterion for classifying the asbestos fibers. Twenty asbestos fibers were initially randomly selected for morphological evaluation; based on an aspect ratio (length : diameter = 3:1). Then the fibers were determined for their EDX spectrums and ED patterns. Our results showed that only chrysotile fiber has a hollow tube structure to be distinguished from other asbestos fibers. Although asbestos fibers had similar morphology, they had different EDX spectrums and ED patterns. Our results on the atomic content of asbestos fibers were very similar to those of other researchers, but amosite and crocidolite had a little difference in atomic content compared with the results from other researchers. The difference may be due to the difference in equipment or asbestos sample selection. A study on asbestos samples from biological specimens to establish a criterion for determining occupational asbestos exposed diseases should be done in the near future.

  • The Gemological characteristics of B.C. jade from Cassiar Mine, British Colombia, Canada, have been investigated, using polarizing microscopy, Mohs' hardness, refractive index and density measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, ICP-MS, Infrared absorption spectrometry, and DTA/TGA. The B.C. jade is deeply green (spinach peen or olive green) in color and is translucent. It shows a resinous or waxy luster. The principal mineral of the material is tremolite-actinolite solid solution and minor amount of Cr-garnet and unidentified opaque minerals are accompanied. Mohs' hardness value ($5.5{\sim}6$). refractive index (1.62), and specific gravity (3.01) are measured. It is very highly tough and shows hackly fracture. The high Fe content ($Fe_2O_3\;4.14{\sim}4.66\;wt%$) in B.C. jade is attributable to a deepening of green color of the material. The B.C. jade starts to dehydrate at v and dehydration is completed at $1000.8^{\circ}C$, transforming tremolite-actinolite solid solution to enstatite, diopside, quartz, and water in its place. This possible reaction is supported by the weight loss of B.C. jade (1.93 wt%) at $1000.8^{\circ}C$ indicated by TGA curve.

  • The asbestos contents in some representative building materials were analyzed using JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The changes in mineral composition during analysis process and problems in JIS method were also examined. XRD analysis of some representative domestic building materials used for roof, wall, ceiling, and floor indicates that slate have the highest asbestos content having 6.87~6.93% of chrysotile. Other building materials analyzed in this study also have 1.35~3.98% of chrysotile contents. The XRD analysis results of asbestos contents in some domestic building materials are presented in this study. This method is very effective for the asbestos content evaluation of building materials according to newly modified asbestos content regulation (Law of Industrial Safety and Health, 2007-26) that limits asbestos content less than 0.1% by Ministry of Employment and Labor. Small amount of tremolite as well as chrysotile were also observed in some samples. With consideration of crystal shape, contents and geological occurrence, it is considered that tremolite is an associated mineral of chrysotile and is not intentionally added. Complemental analyses with optical microscope and SEM/EDS are also necessary because XRD method cannot distinguish asbestiform from non-asbestiform. The XRD method applied in this study is very effective in the asbestos content analysis of building materials, specially building materials showing high asbestos concentration in residues due to the high loss rate with ashing and acid dissolution procedure.

  • Mineral medicines are single or mixtures of minerals and rocks which have been used to treat disease. Recently, their application has been increased by emphasizing the physical properies of the medicines, in addition to their chemical properies. In this study, mineralogical, chemical, spectroscopic and magnetic properties were measured using X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Ff-Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass magnetic susceptibility. Experiments were done using these properties to evaluate application of traditional mineral medicines such as Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok. Mineralogical study proves that Yanggiseok, generally known as tremolite, consists of actinolite. Yeonok for medical usage mostly consists of fine grained tremolite. Eumgiseok is mainly composed of vermiculite and minor kaolinite and halloysite. Yeonok and Yanggiseok, belong to the amphibole group among inosilicates and both have similar emission power properties. The intensity of emission power, calculated from FT-IR measurements, follows in the order of Yeonok, Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok at 40$^{\circ}$C and Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok in such order at 150$^{\circ}$C. As a result of NMR analysis after 20 days in distilled water, the three mineral medicines decreased in the following order; Eumgiseok, Yanggiseok and Yeonok. However, the same minerals decreased in the order of Eumgiseok, Yeonok and Yanggiseok after 80 days. In response temperature, magnetic susceptibility of Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok systematically increased by heating to 25$^{\circ}$C, 100$^{\circ}$C and 700$^{\circ}$C. Magnetic susceptibility of Yeonok shows a decreasing pattern due to heating.

  • Clacic amphiboles along the tremolite (Tr)-tschermakite(Ts) joint were synthesized using a piston-cylinder appratus. At 750-85$0^{\circ}C$and 12-2 kb, amphibole+corundum coexist with zoisite($\pm$talc, chlorite, and Mg-staurolite), but with anorthite($\pm$cholorite, spinel, pyroxenes, and sapphirine) at lower P. At 90$0^{\circ}C$, amphibole+corundum+clinopyroxene($\pm$anorthite, forsterite, sapphirine, and garnet) are stable over the P range 12-18 kb. These amphibole-bearing assemblages are replaced at high P by clcinopyroxene+talc+chlorite+zoisite at 650-75$0^{\circ}C$, and at higher temperatures by garnet+clinopyroxene($\pm$zoisite, orthopyroxene, and Mg-staurolite). Synthetic amphiboles with Ts>~45 mol% contain as much as 0.15 excess cations per formula unit(pfu) based on 23 oxygens(anhydrous formula), whereas less tschermakitic ones are deficient in cation occupancy by up to 0.18 pfu. This trend is attributed to the 야/trioctahedral substitution in Ca-amphiboles. Compositions of synthetic amphiboles display systematic changes with P and T governed by coexisting mineral assemblages. The Ts content (=[8-Si-Na]/2) increases with increasing T( Ts/ T=~0.1 nik% K-1) in the range 750-85$0^{\circ}C$, but remains nearly constant at 850-90$0^{\circ}C$. Pressure dramatically affects the Ts content of Ca-amphiboles:it increases with P at 8-12 kb( Ts/ T=2-3 mol% K-1), but significantly decreases at 12-21 kb( Ts/ P=-2.5 mol% Kb-1). Hence, the most tschermakitic amphiboles, containing 60$\pm$5 mol % Ts, or 1.2$\pm$0.1 tetrahedral Al, occur at 12 kb and 850-90$0^{\circ}C$. Compositions of Ca-amphiboles defined by a simple reaction, 3 Tr+2 zoisite+7 corundum+H2O=5 Ts, are reversed and used to estimate thermodynamic parameters of tschermakite assuming ideal mixing of Tr-Ts solid solutions. Predicted standard molal entropy and enthalpy of tschermakite are : S$^{\circ}$of Tr-Ts solid solutions. Predicted standard molal entropy and enthalpy of tschermakite are : S$^{\circ}$=566.9$\pm$13.7 J mol-1K, -1and H$^{\circ}$=-12518.36$\pm$15.17 kJ mol.-1

  • Asbestos minerals are found at rocks and soils of the Hongseong and Bibong serpentine mines, western part of Chungnam. The area consists of and metasediment, and Mesozoic igneous intrusives with minor age-known gneiss complexes and Mesozoic sediments. With detailed geological investigations, rock samples for the serpentinite and amphibolite areas are collected at sites containing asbestos. Representative asbestos and rock samples are analysed by PLM, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Serpentinites are found as steeply dipping faults with adjacent gneiss complex to the NNE direction. Repeated alteration, including serpenitization and talcification, is found at the emplacement direction for the serpentinite body. Amphibollites occur as intrusives and stratiforms within the Precambrian gneiss complex. Serpentinite and amphibolite (or amphibole schist) contain amphiboles either as asbestiform or non-asbestiform. Varying amounts of asbestos minerals, including chrysotile, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos, are found within the serpentinites. The asbestos minerals are found near the cracks or fractures and along the bedding plane. They occur as cross fiber, slip fiber and mass fiber types. Varying amounts of amphibole asbestos minerals, such as tremolite and actinolite asbestos, are found within amphibolites and as a mass fiber type. Overall results suggest that rocks of the serpentine mines contain serpentine and amphibole type asbestos minerals originated from the hydrothermal alteration. Considering construction nearby the mines and environmental risks by the asbestos, additional land management plans are required.

  • Lens shaped and stratiform titanomagnetite orebodies in the Boreumdo iron mine are closely associated with amphibolite which intruded into Precambrian metasediments. Mineralogical and petrochemical analyses of amphilbolite and titanomagnetite ores were carried out in order to interpret the origin of amphilbolite and the genesis of titanomagnetite ore deposits. Amphibolites belong to orthoamphilbolite interms of Niggli value and mineralogy, and are characterized by the occurrence of relict olivine. The amphilbolites responsible for titanomagnetite mineralization have extremely high content of $TiO_2$, ranging from 2.12 to 4.59 wt.% with the average value of 3.43 wt.%. Amphibole minerals in amphibolites are consist mainly of calcic amphiboles such as hornblende, ferroan pargasitic hornblende and tremolite. Most plagioclases belong to andesine ($An_{30-50}$\ulcorner). The metamorphic temperature and geobarometric pressure which are calculated by the calcic amphibole-plagioclase geothermometer and calcic amphilbole geobarometer are estimated to be 537$^{\circ}C$~579$^{\circ}C$(avg. 555$^{\circ}C$) and 2.9~6.6 kbar (avg. 4.5 kbars), respectively. It shows a typical amphibolite facies. Based on the mineral chemistry and petrochemisty of amphibolites and iron ores which are composed mainly of titanomagnetite and ilmenite in the Boreumdo iron mine, the titaniferous oxide melts could be immiscibly separatd from the titaniferous ultrabasic magma. The genesis of the Boreumdo titanomagnetite ore deposits are analogous to the Soyeonpyeongdo and Yonchon iron ore deposits in terms of their mineralogy, mineral chemistry and geologic setting.

  • The Daehung and Pyeongan talc mines are located in the Yoogoo area, Chungcheongnam-Do. These deposits occur as the complex vein type in the ultramafic rocks which intruded Precambrian gneiss. The talc ore formed from sepentinitt: originated from ultramafic rocks but some of those from hornblende gneiss. The talcification processes were considered here on the basis of the mineral assemblages, paragenesis, and geochemistry. It appears that there are five processes in talcification ; serpentine$\rightarrow$talc, phlogopite$\rightarrow$chlorite$\rightarrow$talc, phlogopite$\rightarrow$talc, hornblende$\rightarrow$chlorite$\rightarrow$talc, and hornblende$\rightarrow$talc. Among them, the most dominant alteration path is serpentine to talc in these deposits. EPMA data suggest that there might be interstratified minerals were in between parent mineral and talc such as serpentine and talc, and phlogopite and talc. It can be found that tremolite exists in between the inner and outer most part of talcified serpentinite blocks coated with phlogopite. Some of tremolites has been altered to talc. The quartz veins and carbonate minerals were found in the talc ore zone. It indicates that the hydrothermal solution played an important role in talcification. The hydrothermal alteration occured after sepentinization. Ore zones can be divided into two zones; talc-serpentine zone preserving a pseudormorph of olivine (mesh texture) and talc-phlogopite zone showing talcification from phlogopite directly or through chlorite. It can be concluded that the formation of major talc ore body was due to talcification of serpentinite and phlogopite by hydrothermal solution. A nature of hydrothermal solution was relatively pure water at the beginning of serpentinization, and was getting richer in silica composition. There was a large amount influx of K and AI with hydrothermal solution in the later stage, and increased $P_{CO_{2}}$ also. It suggests that phlogopite formed in later stages as a secondary mineral. So, the major part of the talc ore body was formed from one parents rocks, serpentinite originated from ultramafic rocks, by hydrothermal solutions at several times.

  • This study showed that the highest temperature point of the Dongrae thermal spring in Pusan was moved to the north direction of the Dongrae fault as times goes by. The Br concentration(1.5mg/L) in Dongrae thermal waters indicated the influence of 2% seawater mixing. If the simple mixing without hydrochemical reaction occurs between seawater and thermal water, the concentration of Mg will be about 20mg/L. But the low concentration(0.1 mg/L) of Mg, contrary to high concentration(10 mg/L) of surrounding groundwater not affected by thermal water, suggested the thermal water, seawater and rock interactions. The calculation of saturation index(SI) by using the geochemical code of EQ3NR showed that the Mg in thermal groundwater, which was introduced by seawater, was removed by the precipitation of Antigorite (SI: log Q/K =71.753, $Mg_{48}Si_{24}O_{85}(OH)_{62}$) and Tremolite (SI: 8.463, $Ca_2Mg_5Si_8O_{22}(OH)_2$), Talc (SI: 6.409, $Mg_3Si_4O_{10}(OH)_2$), Dolomite (SI: 2.014, $CaMg(CO_3)_2$), Chrysotile (SI: 3.698, $Mg_3Si_2O_5(OH)_4$) in the crack of fault zone. The highest temperature point in the study area will move to north direction and stop in the Jangjun area without the input of seawater.
